This isn't meant to sound the way it's probably going to come out, but:
When you take stem cells from an animal, there is still the issue of life and death. Why is it different to kill an animal as opposed to a human EMBRYO? I'm just a little confused...
You don't notice this until you actually try: after a few years of Perl programming, it's hard to put those dollar signs at the end, and even harder to leave off the semi-colons.:-(
We are pre-announcing the announcment of a product that does not exist.
And I thought announcments were always a bit short on details. This is worse...
We apologize for the faults in the announcements. Those responsible have just been sacked.
...[some time later]...
We apologize once more for the faults in the announcements. Those responsible for announcing the announcement concerning the sacking of those responsible for announcing the announcement have also been sacked.
Hmm... my cable modem is capped at 2.0MB/s download. DSL is available at 1.5MB/s download. I would agree with you, if the difference were what it used to be (prior to the cap). It used to be closer to 6-7MB/s download. Since the cap, though, the difference seems pretty small to me.
This is kind of off topic, but if you are looking at Southwestern Bell, I believe their DSL goes up to 6MB/s...
On some enterprise systems, the administrator has the option to have passwords checked against a dictionary for common words, palindromes or other easily guessed passwords. If you are interested in such "smart" password software, check out npasswd at: http://www.utexas.edu/cc/unix/software/npasswd/
If I'm correct, I believe that Linuxconf has this feature too.
Exactly how would you use VNC to set up 20-100 terminals?
I'm not sure on the specifics of X... (ie. how many sessions X can handle)... but you can setup VNC to run on a particular session. Here at work I've got 3 separate sessions. Granted, though, that this takes more macho hardware on the server side.
Stop this silliness right away. First a DVD. Then a poll. Now action figures? Slashdot has shown a tendancy to become silly. Now let's see something decent and military. CmdrTaco, when I say cut, cut to the next seen... Tacooo.... [.....] WAIT FOR IT... Taco..CUT!
You're talking about communication tools for the Palm on Linux. Big freaking deal. We're talking about running Linux on the iPaq. Natively. Who needs comm tools to transfer software downloaded from who-knows-where when you can fire up the TCP stack and telnet to your main box where your cross-compiler is to FTP up new programs?
Who needs tools? People who would rather not mess with their PDA and leave it how it is. Believe it or not, some people buy these things to use, not to show off how many different operating systems it can run.
I'm likely not alone in my need to be able to sync my finance software with my Visor. Are there any plans to link GnuCash to a Palm-based money manager program, a la Quicken and PocketQuicken? Or are there any plans to develop a new, GPLed "PocketGnuCash"?
PalmCoins (http://palmcoins.sourceforge.net?) is currently working on a conduit that will sync their PalmOS program with GnuCash. With the new XML file format, I'm thinking this wouldn't be that hard at all.
Personal Plug: I'm working on an accounting project called GnuLedger (http://webaccountant.sourceforge.net), and while it's still in it's infancy, and while this is rather vapourous, I plan on making the PalmOS client fully compatible with GnuCash (or as compatible as I can make it).
I miss those flashy lights... I've been thinking of installing a bunch of them on my box at home, as well as a little device that will make "bing!" and "wrwrwrwr" noises.
Dood... you've gotta see my apartment. All flashy lights and grr's and noisy hard drives and and...and... I measure my self-worth based on the number of flashy lights and noise in my living room.
What would you say that the odds are that Abit has a "BP6" in development for the Palimino chips?
I'd say the odds are pretty good considering that their dual motherboards have been so successful... they've had the BP6 and the VP6 (which I would love). The BP6 is one of the best computers that I've ever had -- and I totally agree -- an Abit dual Athlon would rule.
The spammers want you to visit their web site and are paying GoTo.com more than $5 / click for you to come and see them. Help them out on GoTo.com's bulk email search page.
Hm...one could write a faily nasty little Perl script to cause a little financial distress....
But the problem that no one really mentioned is that GPL is protecting my intelectual property. Its protecting it in the exact way I want it to be protected and its protecting it so well, that Microsoft cannot steal it! And thats why they cry out loud. They see all the revenues lost, they could gain if they would be able to steal my intelectual property. And thats makes them mad.
That was very well put. But I have a totally honest question that I've never really been able to answer myself... I'm hoping some of you people can. What exactly keeps M$ from stealing my IP? Say my killer C++/Java/compiled language app is made available on my site... both in source and binary form. What keeps M$ from stealing the source, changing the interface, and claiming it as theirs? They've effectively stolen my IP. Now I can say 'Hey, that's mine you stole it.' But on what grounds would anybody ever listen? There are bunches of original programs that perform the same function, how do I prove that they stole MINE?
I don't think that anything can be drop in security. Somebody's GOT to know what they're doing. Back in the olden days I messed around with Bastille's "drop-in-security" and ended up with a foobar'd system that I couldn't even get into. That's not security, that's just uselessness.
With all of that aside though, any kind of thing like this has got to be good. When high-up people see that something like Linux is getting support like this, they (in my experience) become a little less afraid of it. Didn't Microsoft claim to have some kind of security certification on NT or something like that? My memory is getting sketchy so there's a damn good chance I'm wrong. But if Linux could have something similar to that... it would definitely be a start. To some people, fancy titles mean everything.
A simple diff won't be able to pick this up, or counting the number of common words. But, it can be a flag for a human human to check further.
Exactly. And I *THINK* that was probably what was done, since in the article it said that when they looked sometimes entire passages were the same. At least they checked the papers. A bad statement in his program could have expelled his whole class!
You can create your own custom AvantGo channel in the meantime on the AvantGo website. Login and there's a place on your settings page. It took me a little bit of monkeying to get slashdot to let me log in and what not, but it can be done.
why would you not go with something that has battery life for weeks?
I guess it all depends where your priorities are. Right now I've got a Palm IIIc, and I get close to 2 weeks on a charge. Not bad. It's perfect for what I need it for. I take notes on it, keep my phone book, do term papers, tune my guitar, blah blah... and it's a hell of an improvement over my old Nino, which (though outdated) was over kill for me.
I could see uses for a $250 grayscale PDA that's slow as hell and runs for 6-8 hours... coolness factor, expensive terminal and what not. Let's face it, chicks dig PDA's... err... but anyway, I guess some people just have different needs than you and me. And most likely bigger budgets. Hell everytime I enter a deposit into GnuCash the thing laughs at me.
Hm. Now a government document wouldn't possibly be indecent would it?...
Damn... (oops). That's the problem. Anyone know of a government agency that we can contact so that we can tattle on the FCC for their document?
...
"Following are examples of decisions where the explicit/graphic nature of the description of sexual/excretory organs or activities played a central role in the determination that the broadcast was indecent: 'God my testicles are like down to the floor...you could really have a party with these...Use them like Bocci balls.'; 'I mean to go around porking other girls with vibrating rubber products'..."
Not indecent - The text was used solely to illustrate examples of speech that the FCC feels are unacceptable. Blah blah... newspeak... blah blah duckspeak blah blah...
That document made me wanna vomit. It was just so clinical. If those songs/shows/etc offend people, maybe they should just turn them off. Hell (oops), I remember hearing about my Granpa getting all offended when the Beatles came on Ed Sullivan because they had long(?) hair. I mean my god. He'd die if he saw korn.
Come to think of it, the more and more I go on, I wonder what this reply has to do with your post. Oh well. Sorry.

Me neither. Procmail is a wonderful thing.

I have been using this for months. I don't even worry about these new vbs files. This recipe forwards all vbs files to junk@yourserver
Hope this saves you some time.
