Funny I was just reading about Pioneer a day ago. The Pioneer Plaque is very interesting to think about... just imagine an extraterrestrial life finally reading this plaque. I can't ever imagine what a super-intelligent race could do with it.
Just think about it. We think of aliens as being these super intelligent creatures capable of time travel and the ability to travel at the speed of light. We are probably wrong. There are probably races that are millions of times more advanced then or there are races that are millions of times dumber. Then there is that change that the human race is the only one in existence, but then you can start thinking about Multiverse.
It's absolutely mind-boggling about some of the ideas out there. The scary thing is that the reality might be exactly what sci-fi authors are telling us.
Lots of programmers spend insanely large amounts of time in the office with the team working on a project and not enough time with their family. Sometimes during project phases, such as crunch-time, programmers see their team more then they see their family because things like overnight coding sessions are not uncommon.
That server is about to get more knocks then it can handle, its starting to get pretty slow loading for me.
knockd is a port-knock server. It listens to all traffic on an ethernet interface, looking for special "knock" sequences of port-hits. A client makes these port-hits by sending a TCP (or UDP) packet to a port on the server. This port need not be open -- since knockd listens at the link-layer level, it sees all traffic even if it's destined for a closed port. When the server detects a specific sequence of port-hits, it runs a command defined in its configuration file. This can be used to open up holes in a firewall for quick access.
This is an interesting idea, but not very secure. If there was, for example, a need to "knock" a server to activate some sort of access control, then anyone can send the TCP/UPD packets (AFAIK) someone correct me if i'm wrong.
Looks interesting though, but inetd could do the same thing.
Fair enough, I did not know about urpmi before Imoved to Gentoo. I guess this wont stop the next buntch of posters from telling me to OMFG URPM!II! ROLFLAMO, get a life.
But why couldnt they squeeze in 2.6.4 at the time they were getting ready to relese the ISOs'? I used to be a Mandrake user, but I got sick of the fact that once you install, there are no easely automated ways to update yoyr software. I use Gentoo, primarily because I think portage (I also use FreeBSD;)) is the best thing since sliced bread. I also have the 2.6.5 kernel thanks to portage, and USB 2 support is better then ever.
I really think Mandrake, LLC (or what is it?) should concider using a different package/software manager in future releases. This gentoo forums post even describes how to install the superb portage on other distros.
Anyway, someone feel free to correct me or mod me down.
If it'a a matter of security for me and the people that I travel with, then they can share my data. I am sertainly not opposed to this, I dont want some shmuck who got through to blow up my airplane.
Heh, thats pretty true. I tend to stay away from saying anything that might sounds like I have a biased opinion on operating sysytems. I use fbes, linux, windows, max os x and all have their pros and cons.
Anyway, nice comment;) Really funny. I have met people that say things like that in real life.
But does this have any use? Prize money for what? For being lucky enough to get some random number twice? I didnt read teh full description, so I dont really know if there is reale use for this, but from what the Introduction tells me: "We are getting a ton of computers to generate numbers, and if two computers generate the same number, then we win." Hmm, huh? I still dont see what the point of this is? Does this advance some sort of research? Does this support some other principal of theory?
Thanks, my answer has been answered. I didnt really see the sarcasm at first. I dont really see how this (parent) thread is Flaimbait now, but eh, whatever -- this is slashdot and woe is me.
At least for me, I never heard of this ECC-109 method before. The summery clears it up though.
Project Overview
This is a distributed computing project to solve the Certicom ECC2-109 challenge. In general it can be described as a whole lot of computers from all over the world, all of them working together in an attempt to have a collision. Each of the computers runs a program that computes DP (Distinguished Points) values. Each time a computer finds a DP, it is uploaded to a main server. The main server then checks to see if anyone has uploaded a matching DP (this is known as a collision). If a collision happens (two matching DP values exist), then the Certicom challenge is solved!
Yea... but what practical use does this have? Was this done _just_ because it could have been done?
under the heading of 'Introducing: The Self-Cleansing Housing Projects.'
Uh, huh? Why would they name it that?
Anyway, I dont really see the big problem here. There are plenty of sites online that offer you videos of people killing themselves (rotten.com has one of a man shotting himself in the mouth) and even more images of the aftermath of, oh lets say, extramely fatal car crashes. My point is,... there is no point.
Oh, and
"My child was killed twice," she said. "The first time he did it to himself. The second time, online did it to him."
Dont worry ma'am, he didnt feal it the second time.
I was looking at the screenshots before the site was on slashdot, and they got saved to my cache. here is a mirror, but the connection is not that fast.
We were just talking about how the British English language was the true "natural" English language, all other derived languages that were English with an accent. For example, If I (a person who lives in America and speaks US English; no born American (thank goodness)) were to go to England and converse with an Englishman; who would have the accent, me or him? The obvious answer, as a lot of Americans fail to realize, is me.
Does anyone know anything else about how this was done? What exactely was comprimised? The word "comprimised" has a braud meaning, more information would be interesting.
I mean, the projector, will it run Linux? Can I chack my email with it?

Take a look at the International Game Developers Association: Quality of Life for good information about this kind of work. Game development is a career that is notorious for splitting social groups apart.
How about a WikiWikiGrok?
You're right, no one fucking cares. Why the shit is this on Slash-Dot anyway? This is not news. It's not for nerds.

Please accept my deepest appologies, I didn't mean to sound politicaly incorrect ;)

Sucks, I was just going to go to art.gnome.org
Then whats 2k400? How would you say 2004 then? Tell this to the UT2K4 developers.
Yeh, I am just karma whoring ;)
