  1. Only obvious thing for iPod video is: on The Future of the iPod · · Score: 1

Other than pornography from the golden age, the only thing I'd really enjoy video-wise on an Ipod would be-- drumroll-- NETWORK TELEVISION. I'd love to subscribe to TV shows from apple's webpage and have them on the iPod. Most people get some sort of break during the day-- now imagine instead of leafing through that three-week-old People Mag with the crossword puzzle already solved in the breakroom you could watch last night's sitcom or drama on your iPod? It'd work great. And it wouldn't be a movie so you wouldn't keep comparing to the large screen... you're going to delete it when done, anyway. I'll hang up and listen to your answer off the air, thank you.

  2. some situations on What Do You Charge for Tech Support? · · Score: 1

Great question. It's easy for some people to think about it and say, "$X per hour" and then go to the next question, but as you know there are many situations.

Relatives: I usually work for favors/food. If I help them, they don't have a problem helping me with some light construction or bathroom work, that kinda stuff.

Best friends: they know when it's above and beyond usual stuff, so I take whatever they offer, but don't expect anything. Favors I guess.
Casual friends. Usually just enough to cover gas and maybe $10-20... just enough so they know it's not a freebie.

Neighbors who you know ONLY from computer work: Maybe $20-30, depends on time. $50 for a couple of hours, not usually more than $50 no matter what it takes.

Neighbors you know and actually hang out with: Favors and various loot. (snowblowing, plate of cookies, restaurant giftcert etc).

Referals and actual customers: I charge similar to your mom&pop electrician or plumber... you know, the guy who is the only employee and has his name of the van.

Finally, don't forget to have some fun! There are usually plenty of times during a Spybot run or similar when you can get filled-in with gossip or neighbor talk, or just chit chat. That's an immeasurable perk: being connected to the social network.

Will Mac mini Lead the Charge to Smaller Desktops?

    YES.

And the price.... Oy. I just love that price, LOVE IT. I can't wait to see how the El Cheapo model performs for just email and surfing the web. Working at a small ISP I get lots of customers who "just want a computer for email and the web." Grandma doesn't care if it takes 10 seconds to load the email app, or if the hard drive isn't 7200rpm.....

Right. Tracing Clovis artifacts around the Americas is interesting to trace the migration of a technology, not just migration of people. Maybe the folks were already there, and Bob came back from a long scouting expedition with a bunch of arrowheads... "CHECK THIS SH*T OUT, GUYS!!!"

  7. going to cut-n-paste this for future discussions: on Megapixel Cameraphones Compared · · Score: 5, Interesting

    Three points:

    1. Cellphones come in different models, some with cameras, some without. Happily, the ones WITHOUT cameras are usually cheaper, which is great for those that don't want "extra stuff I will never use."

    2. Cameras on a cellphone are extremely useful because it's WITH YOU all the time, and with relative ease you can send a picture from where you took a picture to an arbitrary email address. Even on the low-end .3megapixel you can take useful pictures that may serve a purpose.

    3. The last thing you do before you die is crap your pants.

My eyes ache from rolling to the back of my head whenever I click on a slashdot cellphone article, because it always goes down this road (and yes, this post is part of that).

Porn is both in AND out.

  9. I want to marry this Tray Application!!! on Google Releases Gmail Notifier · · Score: 1

This rocks and is everything I wanted in a Gmail notification utility. YES!!! The last huge feature I need in Gmail is being able to choose from a picklist of validated "send from" addresses, like Yahoo Plus allows. But this Tray App is just fantastic!!!!

  10. Re:Prolly Not TNG on Berman Confirms Star Trek Prequel Film Project · · Score: 1

Ditto, except I'd bump five years to ten or fifteen years so we're POSITIVE it's new blood and to increase demand. During the fifteen years, SLOWLY re-release EVERYTHING again (starting with a nice, tidy TOS box set), to forge the next generation of fan who craves seeing new stories.

  11. Re:SBC used to do this.... on Qwest To Offer 'Naked DSL' · · Score: 1

For about a year or two I had a "dry pair" from Qwest going to my house, and it did not have a phone number on it (the "phone number" was the account number). They charged $50/month for this pleasure.

  13. Re:It wasn't just Symantec on Microsoft Pulls Broken XP Update · · Score: 5, Informative

On Friday 5/23 I had a customer complain that our wireless DSL was down. After doing all the usual junk over the phone, I drove out there and checked all wires, etc. Nothing. His machine was grabbing an IP dynamically, so the wiring HAD to be correct. I asked him, "When is the last time this worked properly?" and he said Wednesday (5/21). I was about to uninstall his virus checker (Mcafee online), but first went into the XP System Restore utility, and I noticed a restore point on Wednesday due to the installation of a Microsoft update. I restored to the way the system was before Wednesday and everything worked great! Unbelievable. Microsoft is totally underplaying this one.
