"He also suggests that 'the PS3 would be more than 35% of the monthly household income' of average families in some world territories."
At the prices ive seen suggested for this system, its going to more liek 350% of some world territories. Maybe they ment 1st world countries.
I dont think this will slow the market at all though. If anything all the people that have been waiting around for the PS3 will realize that they arnt going to get what they have been hyped up to belive. Once they have all the options before them, they will chose one, right now its Xbxo360 or nothing...so people are still waiting to see what the others offer. There is no way that its going to slow down the market, xbox will drop in price, Wii will be out, sales may be bad for the PS3, but i think over all the industry will grow, just like in the past with new generations of Consoles.
You also cant forget how many people out there are buying the 3000$ TV's....they dont buy these so that they can watch their VHS tapes. They buy them because they have the money, im sure the PS3 will go like hot cakes. Just becase 90% of the world cant aford it, doesnt mean that they poeple that can(and there are LOTS of them) wont.
Marketing Deadline? I dont see deadlines having much to do with Vista anymore. They are already 3 years late, and no one seams to be too concerned. I think that M$ has realized that they control the majority of the IT world, and if they say you have to wait 3 more years for our next OS, then people will wait. Mr. Gates has already said that if there is a need, they will delay Vista again, so dont think that Deadlines drive software devel, atleast not with such a huge company like M$. They have enought money/market share/influnce to do whatever they please.
I dont think writing it from scratch is the ideal situation. It would have been more efficiant if they took the win32 stack, and added/fixed problems with it. this way all security issues that have been reolved, remain resolved. Now that its written from scratch, your going to have an entirly new set of issues to deal with.
Story is what carries you through the game? How many FPS's is there out there now adays? How many more can u create...there is only so much you can with the game play? I dont buy a new FPS because it has an awsome new Particle Cannon or something like that, i buy it for the Story. The way that you play the game isnt the most important aspect, its weather it draws you in, and keeps you interested. I dont know who here has played the game Farenheit for the Xbox, but its probobly one of the BEST games ive played to date. And the complexity of the game play is pretty much, move the thumb sticks back and forth....w00t! Not hard, but the story in the game made it like a movie, you were excited to see what happened next, and it was cool because it was like your part of a movie. The game was completely story based, and i enjoyed it more then most games i have played in the past few years.
Story line is 1 of the only ways remaining to make your game original. Sometimes people figure out a good new type of game, but mostly its the same old rehashed ideas, with new stories....that is what makes the half life serice so much better then Quake...and so on...game play can draw u in for a few hours..but eventually it will just repeat. If you have a Story that playes out over 30-40 hours, then then is always something new, and you want to see what will happen next. If all your doing it killing your way through a level, just to get to the next 1, and kill some more things, whats the point?
These statistics do not filter out things such as Business users. Large companies have millons of employee's who browse the internet every day, and i would assume the majority do NOT use firefox, as their system is locked down, and IE is default, and only browser Available. It would be interesting to see what the usage stats are for HOME users. I think that Firefox growth will continue until Vista comes out, at which point it will slow for a short period while people adjust to the new OS. Lots will try out IE7, and simple see that it is a clone of firefox(and other browsers), years behind in joining the game. But soon after its release, new versions of FF, Opera, and other browsers will emerge with even better features, and we will see the numbers start to raise again.
Hopefully larger companies will begin to make the switch, and people will then adopt what they learn at work, to their home environment as well.
Most people i know, have adopted Firefox at home, but that is because the know me, and i did it for them, or told them to make the switch.
I would hope that the real terrorist would be smart enuff to use some sort of private IRC, or something along the lines waste, or some other form of Encrypted Chat. Even gaim with an encryption plug in. But i guess most people dont realize that those yahoo chatrooms arnt very secure. Its scary to think that if even for every 10 fools they catch, 1 is smart enough to stay under the radar...we would never see it comming if they were just smart enough to know how to cover their tracks.
I dont think that it would be very hard to get something past the government if you were too seriouse about it.
"Put your self in their shoes. Pretend for a moment that you produce something of value (from what I've read on/. that will be a huge stretch ). Then, consider that someone is giving it away for free. Then, you will understand DRM."
There couldnt possibly be any one in the/. crowd that puts work into some sort of product that has great value to many people, and its then given away for free.
Your right, people only do things for profit, i forgot that we are in a neolibiral world here, and that we all have to fall in like cows to the slaughter. if THEY say we NEED DRM, they THEY must be right, because god forbid that THEY lose a couple billion dollars in profits next year.
And whats going to happen next? The NSA starts to sniff every packet that goes though your ISP. Suddenly your arrested for saying something your shouldnt have in a MSN or IRC conversation. Its the same idea, just how long till they catch on that they can screw us this way too?
I think that they were trying to make the point that some ISP and a small company, who is leasing bandwidth from a larger ISP...so taht when you start download gigs upon gigs, they have to pay for all that you download, but they still only get the flat rate from you, There for they would be inclied to slow peoples connections o P2P traffic so that they can save money
Look at the size of games for PS1, most were under 700 megs, becuase thats what u had to work with, then when you had more space, you filled more. Maybe the game sizes dont grow because you know you have to work withing a certain size. If you know u have 4.7 gigs to work with, you design a game to fit that. If you know you have 50 gigs to work with, you dont have to limit your game because it might grow past the acceptable size. Giveing the designer more space to work with, will result im them using that space. If they dont have the room, obviously they will not expand.
The example that some games only grow by 10-20% is because they know they cant make it bigger then the disc can hold. If they had the option to add 2 hours of high deffinition video to the game because they got all the extra space they can do it. The games dont grow, becuase they dont have where to grow
Take a look at PC games, 5 years ago, you had games fitting on 1 cd, and that was it, now your lucky to get a game on 2 or 3 cds, or on a dvd, the size grows, its just that on a Console, there is no room to grow, so they sizes dont vary too much becuase you have to be careful with what you put in the limited space
"Of this group, 56 percent had no antivirus software, or had not updated it within a week"
i would think antivirus software that was 2 weeks old would still offer some security, i wonder how much of that 56% had antivirus software, but updated it 2 weeks ago....lumping the 2 together does not seem like an acurate analisys
My school has wireless everywhere on campus, every class, every hall, even the pub and outside. There are hundreds of students connecting, since the school provides a laptop to all students that need it for their programs, IT or animation/film. I get about 1-2 MB/s downloads on good connections. There is no problems, if the network is constructed properly, and u do it right. I have never had a problem with the wireless at my school, so i dont see why it would be any more complicated to impliment in a office enviroment. At home, i do use cat-5, as i prefer the security it gives, and the speeds. Once the cables are there, its alot more stable and simple the wireless.
"Internet Explorer 6 required
Windows XP Game Advisor requires the use of the Windows 98/ME/2000/XP operating system and the Internet Explorer 6 browser. "
Well, i didnt see that one coming.
What happens when these changes end up with stealing of person information, and hackers to compromising networks. This is rediculous. Security should be first, not the goverments attempt to stop "terrorists". They are the ones what will lead to problems, buy making it easier for the "terrorists" to hack our networks. How many terrorist attacks have there been in the last 3 years? Im sure the terrorists are mostly outside the US, where this law wont affect them. This is mearly a way for them to monitor this own population, and find a way to rob them even more. The laws will eventually be passed, and they will be allowed to monitor all your traffic, to make sure nothing "terrorist" is being send, and then they will eventually pass a law so that the MPAA, and RIAA are allowed to make sure no copyright material is comming though the networks, and mircrosoft will do the same. Soon you will have NO privacy on the internet(and we will all migrate to the EUnet...http://politics.slashdot.org/article.pl?si d=05/10/19/1433203&tid=95&tid=219... The laws there will not be so strict, i would hope, and the US will loose control over the internet. So when the US complains about terrorism, they are just trying to do things for their own good. When they say something is going to be used to "fight terrorism", there is no way that someone cant go against this because they will just waive their terrorist flag, and ram it though congress.
Say that you want to make a call to eastern europe..your looking at paying 20c/min. a 20 min call will cost you 4$. I think that i would rather save my $4, and listen to a 30 second spot for pepsi. We do it on TV AND we pay for cable service. Why not get free voip, and listen to 30 second add for any long distance call. The more the call would cost...the longer or more ads they can run. So when u wana call africa, u might listen to 2 min ad, but better then paying 30$ for a call.
Does this pertain to information collected before they change it, because any information that they may have about you from before this, should be under the old PP, only new info should be used for this, how does this work?
no one is stoping you from buying this game for your kids. It more so for parents who dont want their kids playing violent video games.
They dont want their kid going to blockbuster and renting "Rape and kill a hooker".
But if you dont mind your kid playing games like that, go ahead and buy it for them, no one will stop you.
