Because the eeevil Steve Jobs won't play ball with the rent-a-DRM-infested-song cartel, and persists in letting people own their music at a quasi-reasonable rate.
Oh, come on.. you can do better that that... how about the part where evil genius Rove, at the bequest of the dark Wizard of Redmond and Larry the Impaler, rounds up masses of hippie-freak Linux and mySQL users for internment into Windows/Oracle re-education camps.
Oh, and don't forget to work in the Illuminati somehow.
Crikey, it must be tough going through life so paranoid.
While Real, Apple and Microsoft can afford to use digital music download services as "loss leaders" to promote their other hardware/software products (that actually make money), any companies that rely on paid music downloads for their revenue are looking about as viable as a comeback for mid-80's hair metal bands.
"Google representatives confirmed that the MyDoom worm affected performance of the search engine, but, despite numerous e-mail complaints received by CNET News.com, said the attack had a limited impact."
"At no point was the Google Web site significantly impaired, and service for all users and networks is expected to be restored shortly," the company said in a statement.
I guess to google's marketing shills it all depends on the meaning of the term "significant"...
... which seems to confirm that the IP address www.google.com was resolving to(on my Win2K box, 216.239.39.147 ) was legit. So it doesn't seem to be a DNS hack...
Some other/. posters have noted similar error messages from alltheweb.com and yahoo.com.
I don't think it's just a DNS hack. If I try to load the "groups" page by IP address as follows:
I get the same error message (service error -27).
Assuming that the ip address above is the real one for google (it doesn't match any of the bogus ones above, at least), that rules out a DNS spoof.
BTW, I did a search on the UK register, cnn.com, cnet.com... lots of stories about the IPO but nothing on the outage... it's been down over 2 hours now, you'd think some rocket scientist in the media would take note... so far only Slashdot has any coverage!
Republican != conservative... Sen. Hatch is no conservative, he is a "RINO" (Republican in Name Only". He's also been behind some pretty awful legislation that would increase the number of H1-B visas, and is well-known for pandering to the RIAA.
We need to set up a PAC to send this weasel back to Utah...
Mod this baby up... I agree whole-heartedly. For 90% of the unwashed masses, having a PC running a full-blown modern OS is total overkill, akin to handing the keys to the family car to a 3 year old. Give 'em a dumb terminal or thin client (the digital equivalent of a tricycle or a starter bike w/ training wheels) unless/until they can prove they know what they're doing...
Of course this would force the ISPs (most of whom are now owned by big media/telecom giants like Comcast) to sacrifice some short-term profits for the good of the community. Dream on...
OK, let's take your advice. No more C.
Goodbye Unix - OS kernel written in C.
Goodbye interpreted languages like Perl, that have their interpreter written in C.
Goodbye device drivers. Most of these are written in C.
Have fun re-writing all these things in D/Java/whatever.

The mythical Google IPO may be dead... it looks like the bear market rally is over. Take a look at some charts of the Nasdaq . A clear top has been formed, with the 50-day moving average violated and prices falling below support levels.
Before everyone goes out trying to re-create the bubble days, it might be a good idea to do a little research on the AT&T wireless IPO and what happened to those who tried to get rich fast.
Economists are one of the least credible branches of the sciences. You can easily see this by the manner in which they issue endless predictions that they never even bother to verify. When was the last time you saw an economist try to measure the skill or accuracy of their past predictions? Perhaps some studies exist in the academic journals, but I have yet to see one.
Put another way, does anyone remember what the economists predicted for 2003? I'd bet that their predictions for GDP, employment, the stock market, etc. were all wildly off base. Yet no one ever seems to hold them accountable. Even meteorologists attempt to verify the accuracy and skill of their predictions I'd argue that any forecaster who doesn't bother to even verify his own predictions has no more credibility than a fortune teller or astrologer.
Let's see, Penn State is a publicly funded University, UR I'm not sure but they probably take state tax dollars as well... I wonder how the taxpayers of Pennsylvania and NY feel about subsidizing the RIAA, not to mention the cronyism angle.
Are your parents or anyone you know alums? Write a nasty letter the next time they come asking for donations, explaining that you don't appreciate taxation w/o representation. Sometimes stepping on their air hose has a way of getting peoples attention.
Encorporate their technology into MSN search; slowly phase out Google brand.
That being said, the real loser in this seems to be Inktomi/Yahoo. M$ had a contract with them... what does it say that they are now willing to "roll their own" search technology to take on Google?
I wouldn't be too worried about Yahoo... their stock is currently selling at a P/E ratio of somewhere around 100. Their search technology is subpar compared w/Google (I think they are blowing millions trying to market it, what a waste of $). What tangible product do they make?
Would anyone care if they disappeared from the face of the earth tomorrow?
Then again, maybe one could make a nice pile of dough short selling their stock before the next NASDAQ meltdown...
