Call me the prophet if you will (hopefully a bad one at that). Here's how I think it's going down. The president of the United States and all of congress is basically going to tell Silicon Valley to go fuck off. Their technology robs government of power and exposes their dirty laundry to the public consistently. That's a big "no no". Second, Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry has always been involved in US politics far longer than I've been alive. They also export their media to be consumed, not to be interactive thus providing entertaining feedback to other citizens. To allow for that robs them of a time-slice in peoples lives that could otherwise be revenue generating. You know as well as I that the gaming industry and hollywood are in direct competition with each other. Expect gaming to be heavily regulated under the guise of "addition"

In there's the bottom line. To have the RIAA and MPAA cartels wither on the vine would be a national security issue. That's how it will be spun. Being a huge export of America and all and our massive debt that needs to be paired off. So, they will subsidize the industry in one of three ways. 1: Tax breaks, 2: direct subsidies, 3: put the burden of cost on all other industries to enforce the media industry (laundered tax on citizens).

I should know because I was so hyped up about this game that I purchased the Collectors Edition. It came with a cool com badge pin and all. For at least a month or two after initial release, you could never walk the deck of your own ship. You could upgrade the interior look when customizing the design of the ship. But again, to actually walk around wasn't an option when I was playing. This feature was rumored to have been any moment now. From what you've said, I can only guess it got enabled soon after I canceled my subscription. I only played for about 1 to 2 months. Not many days, I know, but I did pour tons of gameplay time into it.

As for the video card issue, it was pushing the GPU hard thus causing the fan to rev up. I can't remember, but I think I was still using an 8800GT or my current GTX 275. For some people on the ST Online forum, it will killing their video card. Not the games fault of course, they just didn't have proper ventilation for their custom gaming rigs. Either way, some video cards got pushed hard. If I recall, the primary graphic feature to have caused this was the shadows detail. Turning it off made a big improvement.

I used to play Star Trek Online. It had good potential, but felt rushed to market. The graphics were good, but the engine was inefficient in that it overly taxed the video card too much. Flying your starship around in space was fun. The starship battles felt like something out of Star Control. I absolutely loved it even if the starships never matched to true scale. It was easy to play with the mouse and keyboard, but yet required some crafty timing to take on more than one enemy at a time. At the time, I wish I could have walked the deck of my own starship in first person. I would have been better had there been co-op play where you could walk aboard someone else's ship to help them out with weaponry or engineering tasks in first person. Just a wish though.

I stopped playing it though because the away team missions absolutely sucked. I bitched and moaned. It was about as useful as talking to a brick wall however. Though somewhat therapeutic at best. Anyways, great concept. Shitty implementation in areas of gameplay that matter.

I wouldn't say it's a young man's game exclusively. But sure, for the most part it's true. I remember doing this sort of thing with PC gaming. I was always upgrading my CPU, RAM (faster timing..etc), Motherboards, Video cards. Oh God, especially the Video cards. Oh, and benching marking the hell out of them for bragging rights. Now, not so much. I may upgrade my video card once every two years if I'm lucky, and I don't want to upgrade my PC at all if I can help it.

So why the change in heart from my early 20s to mid 30s now? Because today, i'm more content in life with what I have. I no longer have the burning desire for the latest bleeding edge technology that's at its very core defined optimism and the game of chasing progress. Why bother? It's a race you'll never win and will be obsolete soon there after anyways. Meh...*shrug*

Now if a new product has something useful to offer in a big way. Sure, I'll take a look.
