I live in Houston and rode out Ike when it came. It sucked when we had no electricity for an entire week, and it took days to find a gas station that wasn't limiting people to 1gal (they stretch inventory to keep more people shopping in the store). Fun fun fun!
I'm sure the registry fixes were tied Explorer.exe and other GUI effects. For example, XP has a reg key called "MenuShowDelay" that's set to 400ms. Change that to zero and now your start-menu flies as you mouse over the list of items. Personally, I think it should have been set to 0ms from factory. But I'm sure MS R&D testing thought 400ms was optimal for the masses at the time.
There are other registry edits that can affect cache and memory as well for XP. As for Windows 7, I'm not really sure there's much that needs to be done or anything that can offer tangible benefits anyways. Throw 4GB of RAM at it, and that sucker flies. It's rock solid and snappy.
It gets better. These ex-Geek Squad employees are now working in the corporate IT sector. They're *KILLING* my occupational credibility as an MSP consultant / sysadmin. Fuckers! They're riding our coattails only to be dragging the entire industry down with them. They shouldn't be answering phone calls in Tier 1 support let alone be allowed to be near someone else's computer.
RTFP! He already mentioned that he came to a complete stop -prior- to making a right turn on red. The fucking camera and the POS software coding decides to state otherwise however.
Around 7pm here in Houston the winds were kicking up some strange dust formations in the air. The clouds looked extremely active and lightning was bouncing all over them. I tell ya, it's an omen! Someone's incantation must have pissed off the Gods. Oh well. Sucks to be them.
Hurricane Irene is right on New York's ass too if the cone of probability is to be believed. Maybe a Cat1 or Cat2. It should arrive sometime Sunday afternoon.
Life is an algorithm that's not isolated from the rest of the universe I might add. The algorithms we employ often have layers of error correction to prevent mutation. Sometimes, a little chaos (bridging the outside) is necessary to improve on an algorithm. But being Human, we like to maintain control and not let nature meddle with the results we wish to achieve. Of course, that's not such a bad thing either depending on the objective.
There's always the causality aspect. But I personally have met many agnostic and atheists in my time. Many whom are disproportionately either psychopathic and/or narcissistic. Those that fear God tend to be kept in check. Those that tell others to fear God however can be just as corrupt with the power to proselytize.
I've seen a few Warcraft and Starcraft competitions on TV while visiting Shanghai a few years back. It's the kind of spectating sport you would see among the likes of poker, pingpong, and shuffleboard on ESPN2 here in the US. Unless your watching with others in the same room, it can be rather boring. I suppose I feel that way because multi-player gaming is nothing more than social interacting. When you watch others play games while spectating alone, I get a feeling of being left out. Perhaps that's why broadcasted video gaming events aren't all that popular even if they have niche markets.
In a way, religion is a form of self-governance either through fear, love, and/or faith. It can be the foundation from which morals are created and even nurtured. While true that the viewpoint depends on the religion in question. But, when you have psychopathic men unshackled from internal conflict (a conscious, constructed or otherwise natural) and are narcissistic, the results can be devastating too.
I know you're joking, but some will not get the humor. The slashdot regulars know all too well of the anti-religion stance here. Everything from Texas educational system, biology, cosmology, and politics almost *always* ends up in an anti-religious flame fest. It's almost a religion in of itself to be anti-religious on Slashdot. The moderations speak for themselves.
What's this 'we' stuff you're talking about? As an American myself, I never confuse kindness for weakness. But I know all too damn well that others do! So when it comes to American foreign policy, being kind to some nations often doesn't project the intent and capability that we are (generally) known for. Sometimes, the other side just doesn't get it.
Most conservatives that I know and hang with don't "hate" Obama. As a person, he seems like a nice guy. The kind you would want to party with. But come on, he's not fit to be commander in chief. Most likely he's acting on advice from his advisers like most POTUS do. But regardless, Obama is causing more harm to this nation via his ineptitude.
I hope him and his family live a long and healthy life. But dear God, he needs to vacate the office ASAP. Him, and most of the congress as well!
Generally, throne reading material is often in the form of magazines and old books. Rarely should they ever find a home outside the restroom, and at best, be thrown into the trash bin when done. Hygiene is an important behavior of living. My problem with using phones and other devices while in the restroom have to do with idea of them being used outside as well. Not many people wash their hands properly, and the idea of spreading E. Coli doesn't go over too well with the rest of us.
That's why each election is a mini-revolution. Without a system of representation, you will eventually have one big revolution. Don't let a vast disconnect grow and fester within a nation.
You don't have to worry about the Chinese airline industry (for now). Air traffic control and other such industry standards have been copied from the West. Generally the planes they use are Airbus. I've flown SSS a few times. They give the same on-board safety lesson that all other western airlines do. SSS Airlines is also the fastest growing airline in China because they're cheap. Basically, you walk aboard and are handed a single bottle of water for the flight. Halfway through the flight, two beautiful chinese stewardess move the front of the isle with a food-cart. But instead of serving food, they're selling all sorts of branded products. Think home shopping network in-flight for at least 10 minutes. This is what we have to look forward to in America. Cheap wins out.
And interns work for free. Their "payment" is in the form of job experience they can put down on their resume'. Don't like it? There's a million others waiting to fill your shoes. The level of intern exploitation is pretty bad.
Of course, you get what you pay for. When a company goes after the intern workforce, chances are the company is already financially unstable.
Thankfully, there's a vast disconnect between the CCP and the average Chinese citizen. The government has much more to fear from its own people than the rest of the world. That is a good thing!
We will all be held accountable. Your fellow citizens will demand it.
Considering the hell and abuse seasoned COPs live through, I'm not surprised. Think of the scum these guys have to deal with on a daily basis. After awhile, they get jaded. Perhaps the best thing is to have mandatory limits on how long you may serve in this line of work. I dunno. But from what I hear, it gets real bad for these guys. Just look at the the divorce rates to see what occupation trends higher.
All in all, police brutality isn't right...by a long shot. But as they say. Play in the mud, and you will get dirty. My advice? Don't live a thuggish lifestyle. Keep your nose clean and the chances of being a victim of this behavior will be next to nothing.
They're also financially falling a part. Your healthcare is as much of a joke as ours (love that bureaucracy and malpractice). The only reason Europeans live longer is because you don't cram fast food down your throat only to be washed down with a 44oz soda. As an American, if I see another fellow American eating like that, I will point and laugh.
Verizon is evil in implementation of their contracts. They have good technology with outstanding network reliability. However, their policies and their hip-hop rapping store staff can suck it!
Comcast OTOH has good technology and a nice network too. They're pricey, but well worth the service IMHO. They customer service in India can suck my left nut, and those sub-contracted repair service men need to stay the hell away from my beer and peanut. But most importantly, they need to fix the problem the FIRST TIME AROUND. You here that Comcast, get your damn men to fix the problem. Your repeat truck-rolls are costing me time from work (to meet them) and you as well.
Because they're not American, that's why. There's a reason Americans have the highest level of stress combined with the best standards of living. Because Americans as a group bust their ass off both physically and mentally. Of course, some are living a more posh lifestyle off the backs of others but that's part of the worldwide ugly nature of humanity.
Sure, makes sense to me. So why not have the internal guts dampen the shock? Aside from the case and screen, most of the mass is from the battery. The rest of the weight is made up of the screen and circuit board. Maybe something as simple as silicone gel pads placed inside the device might be enough. Silicone gel has remarkable properties of impact shock absorption.
Regardless of the nature of the design and their intrinsic tradeoffs, does anyone here seriously think "airbags" is the way to go? The concept is silly, and we don't live on Mars.
If you really want to minimize damage, how about just making devices more impact resistant instead? The concept of using complicated active-protection just ads more weight, complexity, and cost. Impact resistant materials would make for a better solution.

You know, SpaceX is looking pretty good about now.
