I agree with the fundamental ideas, but what about range? If you wanted to go from NYC to LA, you can't single-hop that in a Piper, right? And then you have weather concerns: commercial planes still fly in all but the worst weather. How would your travel plans change if it started raining?

If so, there's a trivial defense: "You misunderstood me." Which kind of makes the definition of the law pointless. You sue me, I say I didn't intend what you think, it was just a joke, how do you prove it? The only ones that win with this law are lawyers.

"Hivemind of hatred"? And just how should a rational, intelligent, decent person respond to a criminal act like destruction of evidence and tampering with witnesses - by the police? If it were a one-time thing, I could see cutting them some slack. Try googling for "police brutality" and follow the links - if you have time enough.

    > Why do companies piss off their employees for pocket change?

In my group, it seemed that we had one stupid manager after another. When the current team lead left, another ass-clown took her place. Then at one group meeting, I did a survey of the people in the room, and it became clear to me why the stupid never ended: the smart, sensible people didn't want to take leadership of the group; it was the ambitious jerks - the kind who'd sell their mother into slavery for a buck - who back-stabbed each other to position themselves as prime candidates for the role.

Once they ascend to the thrown, they don't necessarily become "enlightened" and start caring about their people.

On a Mac, it's really easy to keep track of windows. F9 arranges all windows, giving you a chance to choose the one you want. F10 goes one better in singling out those windows for just the current app. I used to be really picky about keeping windows neat and organized. Now, I don't care - just hit F9 or F10 and grab the one I want. It can be annoying to hop between one and another frequently, but better short-term memory would help, there. Wet-ware, that is...

I can almost guarantee you, then, that your product will also be mediocre. Apple - or any other example of "exemplary" design and execution - does not stand out because their developers are interchangeable. You can't possibly get "insanely great" products from mediocre people, or from processes that necessarily drag everyone down to the lowest common denominator.

If I tell dept. head's boss / IT head / HR / security people that this server is on-line, in violation of corp. policies, then I've taken steps to fulfill my duties. If the machine is allowed to remain on-line, it's not my ass when a breach is traced back to this host. If the higher powers decide, as is likely, to have the machine disconnected, then it's "problem solved." So, either way, where does anger fit in - unless it's a personal thing, ie. "authoritay!!" I'm in shoes similar to yours: I do both sys admin and development. However, I don't think I'd get all cheesed off if this guy tried an end-run-around, because he's clearly in the wrong and will be slapped down. I'd be more upset if upper management said, "Yeah, let him do what he wants." If this guy wants to risk -his- little box, I don't care; but when it puts the entire corp. network in jeopardy, then I'm not happy.
