  1. awareness on How Restaurants Got So Loud (theatlantic.com) · · Score: 1

Sometime I do acoistics consulting for places like these. as has been said elsewhere - owners and designers usually have no clue that noise issues can and shoul be dealt with and forget to budget for this. Acoustics when incorporated in the design can look great and be cheaper than dealing with the issue after all surfaces are finished. Another thing that shocked me - my living is wooden floors and I work with a few architects - when asked them whether they came accross the topic of interier acoustics during their studies they jointly replied that they didnt.

  3. Who has time to peer review anonymously? on Some Science Journals That Claim To Peer Review Papers Do Not Do So (economist.com) · · Score: 1

As my GF works in research, we occassionally discuss topics like this. In the Economist article there is a group mentioned asking for a more transparent review process - sounds very reasonable. Another thing is - if you participate in the peer review process, this should get you merit similart to publishing a paper. Peer review done right requires time and if done anonymously there is not so much incentive for you to do so since you are already too busy producing all the papers the system requires from you.

Bought one (Dell Venue) in 2013 or 14 mainly to have a lightweight deivce capable of connecting to a soundcard a do acoustics measurement, serves perectly well for this. Does a decent job browsing the web, can do most office/mail work, can even do some DTP in case of emergency. Serves well to play video when on the road. After all the time the battery does a good job so I guess it will be at least two more years before I buy a new device.

  9. The system is obviously not ready yet on Microsoft Fails Windows Phone Fans Again By Delaying Windows 10 Mobile (venturebeat.com) · · Score: 1

I liked WP 8.1 for being fast and responsive on modest hardware. Was eager to try WP10 so I enrolled to windows insider and started getting builds and so far am ambiguos about it. WP10 is a bit tidier and better organised, otoh the phone feels slower/less responsive and there are a couple of minor glitches (music player sorta hiccups and inserts 2s of silencee every 15 minutes or so, the accept phone call screen got changed so that I managed to accidetally drop couple of calls just thanks to the new layout) that need to be sorted out. So maybe it is better that they wait until the thing is ready to go out

  10. Latest codecs do better on Can We Really Tell Lossless From MP3? · · Score: 1

Few years ago it was rather easy to distinguish even a 320 kbps mp3 from the original, the space present in the wav version collapsed in the mp3 (done with some olde lame incarnation - 3.90 or something). Thus I doubted the quality of mp3s. Recently one guy pointed to me that newer versions really improved so I gave it a bit time to testing. Using LAme 3.98 and beta 4, listeningwise it is rather hard to detect any difference but is possible to notice subtler detail in quieter parts of songs but I doubt that it would prove significant enough as to show for majority of subjects in blind listening tests. I also ran the sampes thru analysing sw (arta) and the mp3 exhibits a tad more distortion (mere 2-3 dB higher threshold). Must say I was pretty amazed.

  11. Re:Oh so very close on Toshiba Unveils 80GB 'iPod drive' · · Score: 1

I don't believe you are able to listen to it all. To me a decent size of a collection is somewhere around 20 Gigs - when you get some new stuff, you delete the one you had not listened to for last six months.

Another point is that your "precious" collection will have some 300 Gigs when the 200 GB drive is out. Or will be gone due to some hard drive failure or theft :)
