Cynics are numerous and void of ideas. Ignore them. I hope Rio is giving to Xiph for using Ogg (I hear Xiph takes contracts to develop for a particular hardware), but anyone getting one of these should be donating. If Rio says they are giving a portion of the proceeds to Xiph, I'd be even more likely to buy from them.
One of the X chromosomes is mostly disabled a little bit past conception (after the cells have divided a good amount though). However, which one is disabled is random at this time, which means different regions of the body derived from the original cell will have different X chromosomes disabled (into what's called a Barr body). This is all very screwy which is why females are very screwy.
If it can be done, you have to do it. Otherwise you'll get killed in war. I'm just sort of hoping that the universe won't allow it. Better computing is a good thing, but I hear the most ardent supporters and technophiles arguing that all encryption could be broken. Just hoping those types are wrong.
Same reason I hope the speed of light isn't broken. There should be room for cleverness in the universe. Being able to compute anything and be anywhere at once just makes things boring.
Thing about those opposed to weapon technology...

...you'll never have to hear them outdoors. Eventually we'll have a space based laser.
Wouldn't that be giving cheaters an easier time though? Yeah it's security through obscurity, but there's never been an open source fps that's current, so it's unknown how programming the client affects cheating.
Well, first of all abolish all intellectual property laws to get the corporations out. Then lower taxes so individuals can donate to their favorite open source project.
That's what America's Army game essentially does now. Try it out, it's a great example of government making software that is freely copyable (read the license).
Sure seems easy to me. You have to devote much of your time navigating a minefield of patents--the lawyers are the only ones getting ahead here. Short term or long term, patents retard development and that's easy to see.
So, preventing people from copying a song is irrational. Encrypting a personal e-mail is not. DRM, as I see, has basically come to mean the "evil" side of encryption.
Where do geeks go now for libertopia? Maybe an Aleutian island they can buy?
Isn't it sad that every land mass is claimed by some country...why not just let one be a libertopia??? That's how it started.
Are they gonna code BCD (binary coded decimal) in their "supercomputers"? I wouldn't call any computer that does anything for the sake of decimal "super", including conversions. Stop acknowledging decimal!

When these stupid "Intellectual Property" laws are abolished, what will slashdot do? Maybe have interesting stories on math and science.
Not everything is the product of influence. What about idiot-savant musical geniuses, who compose with little training?
And compromisers are the worst of the bunch. There is no compromise. IP is thought crime, it's not verging on it. In any form, it is evil.
Geeks hate the inconsistency of left/right (oppose gun laws but support drug laws???). I can respect a true socialist.
So that's a way to know the cat's female too?
Why aren't you libertarian? Better yet, why is a non-libertarian mentioned on slashdot? Geeks are largely libertarian. Vote Ken Hamidi!

But I'll keep playing America's Army anyway.

That's like roses and plants. Stupid.
I believe I'm the only slashdotter to think so. Most others just want to reform or eliminate "software patents".
The truth stands among the brainwashing and blathering.

What about the DRM (even though it's silly) on iTunes? How about the patents?

Libertarian==anti-"intellectual property".
Option to not even let e-mails that aren't on the list get in. White-listing is going to be very important.
