  1. Hexadecimal please? on Jodrell Bank Telescope Gets No Signal From Beagle · · Score: 1

You do know geeks hate decimal, right?

  2. Wasn't this supposed to be WORM? on IBM Says Polymer Memory Could Be Ready By 2005 · · Score: 1

I sort of hoped it would be some sort of write once, read many like CDR's are. It lends permanence to data that's comforting--sort of like how you know the books on your shelf will never change.

  3. Shouldn't that be... on IBM Says Polymer Memory Could Be Ready By 2005 · · Score: 1

  4. Hexadecimal capacities? on IBM Says Polymer Memory Could Be Ready By 2005 · · Score: -1, Flamebait

Capacities should be given in hexadecimal bytes. Decimal has no place in computing--unless you want to work with bowling scores.

  5. What about Go ? on Chessboxing - The Sport Of The Future? · · Score: 1

Hey, has Go been brought up in this article on Chess yet?

  6. Wrong. on Russians Invade with Flying Saucer · · Score: 1

Try looking at words instead of numerals. Twelve is not "onety two" or something like that. "Twelve" is not decimal in any shape or form. Hmm..."virst", "telve"--is the truth making you go crazy?

  7. Born in the USA? on Russians Invade with Flying Saucer · · Score: 1

The very first thing you hear is essentially base sixteen floating point. As in--eight pounds, twelve ounces, being 8.C pounds.

  8. 500 pounds? Use hexadecimal SI. on Russians Invade with Flying Saucer · · Score: 0, Offtopic

    What's that in hexadecimal kilograms?

  9. Brain sensors--not ready for the masses. on What To Get A Millionaire Gamer For Xmas? · · Score: 1

That story on sensors that hook up directly to your brain seems appropriate. It would work now to control games, but it's not a mass-market thing. Sure, it may be a $99.99 "control cap" years from now, but a superior customized setup should be doable now if you've got the cash.

  10. Why would I tip? on Apple Announces 25 Million Song Downloads · · Score: 1

Why would I tip when I'm paying an idiotic "marketing pricing" x.99 for information? Will tipping make the information freely sharable? Why should I tip anyone who is far too cynical to ask for tips? The donator should not be the one to go out of the way.

  11. Default to zero on Apple Announces 25 Million Song Downloads · · Score: 1

It's not my site, but I would just force you to make the price selection (make the default blank). Now I'd put the price list from highest to lowest.

  12. A non-evil competitor. on Apple Announces 25 Million Song Downloads · · Score: 5, Interesting

Suppose there was a competitor that didn't give us the garbage x.99 cent "marketing price". In fact, the fee paid was variable! So the extra amount is equivalent to a tip. Some might say that tips make sense with digital goods, where the marginal cost is near zero. Cynics (plentiful and uncreative) at this point just walk out of the room after delivering a few loads of regurgitated garbage. So, the option is $5 to $18. Do you think $5 is the choice taken most? Look here.

  13. Standardizing on hexadecimal? on X-Prize Progress Update · · Score: -1, Offtopic

We've already seen the disastrous consequences of using two different systems with metric/English leading to the downing of the Mars surveyor. All our computers work with binary, so why not standardize on hexadecimal? SI can work with any radix, after all (use base units, and the kilogram).

  14. Time. on Where Are The Edges Of Today's Technology World? · · Score: 1

Time is based on prime factors 2, 3, and 5. Decimal has 2 and 5. You cannot represent time fractions in decimal (just like we have so much problem representing decimal fractions in binary). Decimal time systems work and have been tried (see Napoleon), but inertia makes it hard to change.

  15. MP3 is Evil on Cultured Perl: Fun with MP3 and Perl, Part 1 · · Score: 0, Insightful

Especially when there is a patent-free option (ogg) available. MP3 is Evil. It is based on the same system that killed many due to "patent protection" on AIDS drugs. Do not use or support an evil system, especially when alternatives are available.

  16. decimal time? on Where Are The Edges Of Today's Technology World? · · Score: 1

You'll got really confused stares if you start claiming ten hours in a day. We already use a varity of radices. Even hexadecimal, if you consider measurements like pounds. Hexadecimal conversions are much easier to the computer than decimal. I'm doing a binary floating point math library, and hexadecimal conversions are trivial. Using hexadecimal literals will improve complie time, and %X will improve time required to output numbers.

  17. Any that use hexadecimal? on Multiplayer Linux Games · · Score: 1

Any games that have hexadecimal input/output?

  18. How is decimal limiting that edge? on Where Are The Edges Of Today's Technology World? · · Score: 1

How much has decimal limited advances in science and technology? Using hexadecimal SI, couldn't the edges be brought back much further, sooner?

  19. Copyright should be abolished. on Roland Backs Down On MT-32 Emulator · · Score: 0, Flamebait

So then you could distribute your emulator. It may still be infected with decimal literals, or decimal spread out through number outputs and documentation. But abolishment of copyright would be a good step.

  20. Does Archos play non-evil formats? on Archos Recorder + Rockbox Plays Video · · Score: 1, Interesting

That is, vorbis or FLAC? Are the video formats patent-encumbered? There's no need to use Evil formats when Good ones are out.

  21. Magnatune is more important. on iTMS Named Fortune's Product Of The Year · · Score: -1, Flamebait

They offer variable payment for downloads (essentially tipping), and allow downloads to be shared. Plus there's no marketing-price (x.99 cents). iTunes music service is in the end still Evil.

  22. anti-plagarism. on Canadians [Will] Pay Levy on MP3 Players - Updated · · Score: 1

This could be modelled after some of the creative commons licenses. I think though if you argue for anti-plagarism laws, you're not truly against copyright. Remember, nobody can create information.

  23. GPL is restrictive. on Myths About Open Source Development · · Score: 1

From your other writings, I take it you are a libertarian. The problem with the GPL is it forces you to make source available (by way of copyright). This is limiting, just like not being able to copy is limiting.

  24. What about patents? on Canadians [Will] Pay Levy on MP3 Players - Updated · · Score: 1
