Actually this 'can' is almost entirely plastic and the slaked lime residue that remains in the can will help decompose the plastic while in a land fill. my other comment links a PDF that mentions this.

Plastic mold for Ontro
on
Self-Heating Can
·
· Score: 2, Informative
The company Uniloy, who did the plastic molds etc for Ontro have this press release about the creation of the can. The PDF was released Dec of 2000.
I'm still trying to find a full equation for how much heat is created by the Calcium Oxide (Lime) and Water reaction for given volumes. I'm just intrigued that they get a fast enough reaction from the lime and water... maybe they added some carbon dioxide to further drive the reaction? This would produce mortar (CaCO3) and water.
Reading through a lot of the comments here let me just say that people don't understand the point of the posting.
'rneches' has clearly looked at the current market of available laptops. Prolly only missing out on a few low-profile products.
This is an 'Ask SlashDot' posting. Why are people posting additional questions rather than useful tidbits of information.
He has specific goals in mind for the laptop of his dreams (goals that I happen to share), why would you suggest a piece of hardware that violates 90% of his wish list as a solution?
I have been wanting exactly what you are talking about for at least 6 years now. I've been looking for off-the-shelf because I've felt that I didn't quite know enough about hardware to build one and really don't have the time. A few years ago when Sun was talking about Java chips that could natively handle the language and perhaps it's own OS I thought they might head this direction with some hardware... but alas.
There are certainly enough (net|sys)admins out there to support a 'community' for this effort. After all this hardware setup is perfect for us at work or on the road. (Even at work we are away from our desks at racks of computers or in foreign data centers!) My company (Steem) will gladly step up the web resources , maybe even hardware purchasing if we could begin producing something 'sell'able. I would even venture to guess that ThinkGeek would support the endevour on some level.
I'll keep an eye on this story and see what develops. Obviously the more off-the-shelf (COTS as the gov businesses call it) stuff we can find the better. I have looked at the PC104 hardware and it seems do-able but we'll need to work at getting all the other pieces together.
The North America link directly from SlashDot is misleading. The map linked was for 2002. The map for this years leonids reflects a time of Nov 18th 10:01 UTC. (The 2002 map shows Nov 19, 10:29 UTC)
I've always preferred the look of "e-Mail" since it aesthetically looks pleasing (to me) and de-emphasizes the "E" without completely disassociating it from 'mail'. The article on pretext.com uses all lower case 'e-mail'. So does the body of the Yahoo article... but the Yahoo article title uses "E-Mail" as if following standard title capitalization rules. It doesn't even occur to me that there would be any technical reasons to choose one over another, I'm sure it's purely style.
And yet I sitll hear people talk about this as a "new" technology. Human perception is such a tricky thing. I'm personally glad it has become mainstream. Even with the curse of SPAM it still has a world of uses that are worth while. Now we just have to hope the Internet as a whole isn't just a 'fad'.;)
Yeah, too bad UPN and WB don't "qualify" to be run on DirecTV. I'm even paying extra for the "local" channels (local to the Wash DC area) and I don't get either one! I guess it's time to rig up my own antenna for tonight!
Send me your e-mail addy and I'll get the full screen version to you for posting. (Like I mention in the later reply... I can't risk saturating my company link yet today, later.:)
If there is a positive effect to discovering this 'new' weapon... at least the resulting blast doesn't irradiate the counrtyside, just lots of dust, heat, and debris. ---

Specifically the zip has a replacement (Windows 9x, dunno if it works for NT or 2K) DLL (Only one in this zip but I have DLL's for many other versions.) for Netscape 4.76 DOMESTIC. Here's a bit from the readme that lists some of the changes I hacked in:
I have turned off the Netscape 4.7 "Shopping" button. I hated that thing. luckily I only had to look at it once.:)
The search button goes to google.com!
The "My Netscape" button goes to slashdot.org/index.pl!
The mail window's bottom frame no longer loads Netscape ADs. Instead it loads this.
FYI In the current version I have hacked the "about:" page which isn't quite kosher for showing credit were credit is due for the Netscape corporate legal stuff... but oh well it's a hack.
http://steem.com/all-hack-netscape.zip - Contains all DLL's that I have hacked (basically starting with 4.51 when I first saw the "Shopping" button.) ---
Don Rude - AKA - RudeDude
I am seeing a lot of misconception here about what my thought experiment implies.
I am most definatley NOT talking about a proof of location that is broadcast without user control. I'm talking about a voluntary "location signature" type technology. (For example I do not have to use digital signatures at all times and I can produce an "anonymous" one as needed to hide my own identity.)
I've also had the suggestion from someone else in the office that a third party signature of time stamps would be handy. For example, instead of having certified postal mail sent back to myself to prove my patent is pre-dated, perhaps there could be a way to get a third party time stamp included in my digital signature.
Just more fun thoughts.:) ---
Don Rude - AKA - RudeDude
ISP/Annoy blockades the proceedings of the investigation and request for disclosure of identity based not upon merits of the investigation, but rather on principle, horribly delaying the investigation into a threat of violence against an individual. (NOT cool).
I have to say that I am rather torn on this particular issue.
My company just happens to be in a related area because of a "greeting card" type of site that we put together (called pinstruck.com), so I feel I have some right to speak on this and have spent a reasonable time thinking about it.
My stance as the ISP/Web-Site is that I want to protect a persons anonymity primarily because we don't log, track, cookie, or identify any particular hit to our site. Since we don't go out of our way to track any given hit the chances are higher for mis-identification than of finding useful information. Therefore I feel we have every right to demand for a full explanation of who and why we should "identify" (read as: provide the IP address) a hit.
Granted: If any court or officer of the law served us some papers, those papers prolly contain all the justification needed.
So I guess the question (for AskSlashdot perhaps?) is, "Under what circumstances should an ISP/web-site protect or reveal details about a hit to their page?" This seems like a very sticky wicket for even seemingly innocuous sites, much less someone on the edge like Annoy.com.
Props to Annoy.com (In my personal opinion) for fighting for freedom of speach and balancing that with my privacy rights.
I find it interesting that ANYONE can get in trouble for "decoding" the output of this device. I installed the dumb windows software that comes with it and dug around a little.
There is an app that gets installed BY DEFAULT called "catscan.exe". If you run it instead of the tray item it grabs the device output and shows you the plain test decoded data. ---

Here's the decode spec itself from the README found in the link driver:
The encoding is a base64 (not MIME tho) with a random XOR thrown in. Each
letter is a base 64 (6 bit) number, a is 0, z is 25, A is 26, Z is 51, 0 is
52, 9 is 61, + is 62, - is 63 (and fill in the blanks between there). A group
of four of these 6 bit numbers are combined into a single 24 bit number, which
is then split into three 8 bit ASCII codes (XORed with 67).
Taral corrected my first perl script to solve the short code problem. If a
group of 4 characters is not complete (ie there are only 2 characters), it
should be padded with 0's ('a' in the base64 encoding), and then follow the
same decoding process. Then chop off the same number of characters from the
decoded string that were padded onto the encoded string.
No tables/codes should be used anywhere - it is simply a coincidence that they
work for numeric values, because the top 4 bits of all the number ASCII codes
are the same, 0011 binary.
If you want to print your own barcodes I suggest the encoding called "Code 128". I found a company (Elfring Fonts) that sells windows fonts and software to make it easy to encode your own stuff:

My understanding is that mySQL has been designed and developed with SPEED in mind, not necesarilly heavy features. I feel the mySQL has succeeded in this goal and this is why my compnay uses mySQL tightly integrated with PHP. My only concern is when scaling an application mySQL can not use multiple servers (for redundancy) very nicely... the "UPDATE log" being the only current solution. Is there any reasonable way to add this feature without a large performance hit? (Maybe simply connecting that same UPDATE log to another live mySQL server via standard connection protocols?) --- Don Rude - AKA - RudeDude
Sweet maybe I can begine using cosmic rays to transmit ethernet frames! Talk about shortest path to destination! Maybe space/time folding would work better?
Seriously though, all this new tech just plain rules. I can't wait to see what things are like when I'm 90! --- Don Rude - AKA - RudeDude
So what does that mean for me since my birthday is today? And what does it further mean that my drivers liscense will expire on 02/02/02? Not to mention I was born in 1976 being the bicentenial year of the USA? And geez, I was born around 9:00am which means 2:00pm UTC! Plus, I'm 24 today, that's 2 and (the digit) 2 to the 2 power! And what of the fact that I'm really NOT a groundhog!?!? OMG I really freaking out here! Where's my numerologist!?!?!? --- Don Rude - AKA - RudeDude
