    No, it's not. Information that was not carried to the binaries cannot ever be recovered, without actually *having* the source. You can disassemble it, but that won't be the same as having the original source code.

    This is kind of a stupid post. It wouldn't be stupid if you just didn't happen to know it. But to correct someone by saying something so blatantly wrong, that's stupid.

    Albertson's over here in AZ for years advertised thier Bonus Buy program, where you get the discounts without having to carry around their card. This past month they added a bonus card program, ensuring anyone who didn't fill out a form would get ripped off.

    If that isn't customer betrayal, I don't know what is. Now I'm less inclined to shop there than at places that have had cards all along (plus they're a little bit more expensive, either way).

    But yeah, any user with really high demands on image editing would want photoshop, because it has 16-bit support, better color tools, etc.

    If you're going to do something other than what would generally be expected, don't. It makes for a frustrating experience- even for advanced users.

    Exactly! Emacs and Scite and many other advanced, pretty-printing text-editors piss off advanced users all the time. I think a better policy would be:

    If auto-indent is set, when the user presses return, have the indentation of the new line be the indentation of the previous line, unless the user is inside parens (in Java/C/C++/Ada/Pascal/etc.), and in that case, make the indentation line be x off of the first non-whitespace character beyond the opening parens (where x is set by the user, and by default one).

    That way, if the user wants to change indentation, the program will let them. Otherwise it leaves it the same. So you won't have to tell the program whether you want your case statements to look like this:

    switch x {
    case 1:
    dosomething; break;
    case 2:
    dosomething; break;
    case default:
    dosomething;
    }

    or this:

    switch x {
    case 1:
    dosomething; break;
    case 2:
    dosomething; break;
    default:
    dosomething;
    }

    Basically what I want are well-thought out user interfaces.

    I don't think picking a "loaded" example makes my argument fallacious. It just means that I could have picked an example that wouldn't have caused the discussion to be sidetracked into something entirely different. I was talking about the power aspect, not the violence aspect.

Sure, the fine is a Good Thing because Microsoft deserves to be fined, since they ripped people off and have engaged in unfair, illegal competitive practices, and W's administration did not allow them to be brought to justice. But Microsoft, at the same time, is using international courts in its assault against Lindows (aka Lin----), which I would say is a Bad Thing.
