I drive to some pretty remote places storm chasing, and use a Cradlepoint CTR350 with a Verizon USB727 aircard hooked up to an external wilson mag mount dual band antenna. This is about the best you will do without using expensive satellite.
That film you are talking about was the Kansas Turnpike/El Dorado Lake Tornado. The video was all for dramatic effect - If you look at the lines in the road in the video they aren't travelling more than 35-45mph.
Quite a memorable video, and probably the best that crew ever shot. It's being remembered almost 18 years later!
Be prepared for long hours in the car, clear sky busts 1200 miles away and a lot of gas station burritos. Storm Chasing, while fun, isn't as glamorous as Discovery has made it out to be.
Yes, there really is that big of a need for HAM Radio Operators. Many of the people in the hobby are getting up in age, and there aren't nearly as many young, able bodied HAM radio operators nowadays to do disaster communications.
Most younger people feel that they can just pick up a cell phone and call, and thats fine with them. Unfortunately, as we can see, they don't always work. HAM radios do.
Actually the shutdown procedure goes more like this:
Skyride goes from 38 to 20 cabins about 30-45 minutes ahead of storm
then about 15 minutes ahead White Water landing shuts down
Skyride shuts down
then the Coasters. Dragster and Millennium Force are first, along with Magnum and Power Tower. All people waiting in line for Power Tower must be evacuated
Then the rest of the coasters go down usually as quick as the phone calls can go out
The reason they require you to be not a 'guest of exceptional size' is not their fault, but due to the manufacturer (Intamin). Mostly, it has to do with the ride accident at Six Flags New England on Superman.
I've ridden all 3, and Xcelerator is my favorite out of them. Superman: The Escape was really boring, if you ask me. Xcelerator gives you a great pop of airtime, and is overall the best ride. Dragster is pretty fun, but not nearly as fun as Xcelerator.
I've got 1 ride on Superman The Escape, and didn't waste my time this last trip. I've got 5 or 6 on Xcelerator, and over 60 on Dragster.
Their prices. The fact that their cable modem service NEVER worked here. Their tech support sucked. They always told us it was a 'line issue' and that they'd have it fixed. After 2 years of their BS, we finally got DSL.
We are living better today than we ever have in the past. Indoor plumbing, electricity, heat and ac, mass transportation.... It all makes our lives much much easier. We couldn't live in cold climates without many of the modern convieniences we have today. The world would be packed in a small corridor along the equator.
What about when people get cancer? Or get sick? Without todays medicinal advances, there would be no treatment. Without everyone being dependant on everyone else, there would be no innovation. There would be no specialization, and no doctors.
This idea is nice when your mind is high on drugs, I guess, but when you look at it in reality, its a dumb idea.
LOL On one of the cedar point boards I post on, they joke about these rumors all the time. Do you honestly think Cedar Point would spend ungodly amounts of money on these roller coasters to have them sink? Its absurd.
Its really a shame they've let DT deteriorate like that.
But one cool thing is that they have themed the new ride Top Thrill Dragster very well

working 8pm-6am has its advantages....Like 3 days off a week.

Even if Dragster isn't running, the other 15 roller coasters are worth the visit to Cedar Point.

It's actually a lot more similar to Superman:The Escape than it is Deja Vu.
The only parallel it has with Deja Vu is that it breaks down constantly. Man Deja Vu is a pile of junk.

And we pay half price per month now for DSL.
S&S Power Amusements Company is based in Utah. They've made lots of coasters and thrill towers around the US.
Sounds like the press in Toronto is stupid.
