    While I believe that PJ is a real person (there was an article in 2005 by SJVN where he claims to actually have met her) I've seen too many faux pas on Groklaw to consider it worth even following anymore.

    We'll see if RMS is actually able to craft a license that puts Novell in violation.

    But don't expect to see anything anytime soon.

    There really isn't much of a groundswell of software projects poised to go with GPL v3: there are only 375 GNU projects listed on the FSF site that are actually under "free" licenses and not all of those are GPL ... and then when the few that do go that direction actually accomplish it, the copyright owners will have to issue "cease and desist" letters with specifics on violations. And such violations will have to be based on specific patents (if we're talking about targetting deals like the MS-Novell covenant.)

    In other words, I wouldn't hold your breath for any action against Novell, even after GPL v3 is released.

    Actually, yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre when there is no fire will get you arrested - this is not considered "free speech" even in the U.S.

    It is a matter of public safety, as people have actually died in human stampedes.

    I find PostgreSQL to be quite easy to admin.

    The large community argument is not really an advantage either - the MS-Windows community is MUCH larger than the Linux community, but I would not recommend any version of MS-Windows to even my worst enemy.

    As for the toolset - to what are you referring?

    Of course, Perl is much better at database support than PHP with its DBI:DBD combination from CPAN.

    And everyone knows that anything you can do in PHP, you can do in Perl just as easily.

    MS dinged them big time for not removing the software on secretaries' desktop PCs that they had simply because they got hand-me-down boxes from the engineering staff.

    I'm thinking a $100,000 fine per incident would be justifiable.

    Pay Per View is NOT Pay Per Viewing.

    A "View" in this context is similar to a "Window" or "Door" .. You're paying for a given channel connection for a given period of time .. in other words, you're paying for a SERVICE, not someone's property.

    I tend to disagree with you on one point - I don't believe there was a contract.

    If there was a proper, written contract, then it would be a no-brainer for Connelly to show the world.

    The fact that he refuses to make the contract available to the same people he conducts interviews with is a very telling act of omission.

    They simply changed the process for the timing of recognizing revenue from subscriptions. This was done on advice from their new auditors. The previous method of recognizing revenue was NOT illegal, nor even immoral.

    The auditor simply made the recommendation to help Redhat perform better, legally.

    Oh yeah ... those vertical lines running down the side of the page make things so much more readable ... uh huh .. YSR ..

    When you have to use tools like that just to be sure you're reading a source listing properly, the language is at fault - not the layout system.

    So how come no one has come to rescue about my other comment - languages that require everything to be an object cause more overhead.

    Face it - Python is crap. Period.

    Yeah it's really fun when someone has indented four or five structures in and I'm looking at a hardcopy print and have to suffer through wrapped around lines that just seem to go on and on and it's really a blast to try and see which line goes with which indent.
    So how do you tell if this line is on the same indent with which sentence?

    Larry Wall's state of the onion was entertaining and informative. You just have to learn to think "outside the box" because TMTOWTDI.

    In that one little speech we learned quite a bit -
    He was telling us, using screensavers as visual aids, what has been happening with himself over the last year - just like the "State of the Union" is supposed to do.

    He was talking a bit about the make-up of the design team - using screensavers to illustrate how he sees the way other team members think.

    He was also reminding us to think "outside the box" - using screensavers as visual aids for his talking points is very novel. And he was reminding us at the same time with a couple of of those points that people behind Perl don't necessarily think like the rest of you.

    The greatest achievements in history are usually from people who thought "outside the box".

    Remember, Larry Wall was a linguist who created a programming language that was simply made for generating reports easily.

    And if you know anything about Asperger's Syndrome, you know that an Aspie's sense of humor is different from the rest of you.

    I found the article very entertaining as well as informative as to why the state of Perl 6 may not be as far along as some desire. Sometimes things in life happen outside of programming.

    Positional languages like COBOL and Python make for difficult-to-maintain modules (especially when you're not the one who wrote them in the first place).

    And everything being an object is not necessarily a good thing either - a lot more overhead is involved when you have to create an entire object to do some simple communications.

    Been there - done that - sold the t-shirt to the next idiot in line.

    Finally some concrete reasoning to combat the "But it doesn't work like Windows" FUD. I am forwarding this one to Jerry Pournelle who seems to hold himself as Authority Supreme in judging the IT world.

    If we could get Jerry to retire (or at least stop visiting Redmond so often) we would get more people converted sooner.

    There were four articles on Linux put out by BusinessWeek. This is one of the more positive of the bunch. Now if we could get Jerry Pournelle to retire (or at least stop visiting Redmond so often) we would get more people converted sooner.
