"Funny thing is, the MS executive (Chris Sharp) used to work for Red Hat."
Funny? It's scary more than anything, as it'll just make what he says seem more 'credible'. Of course, he's just some greedy bastard, and it's good to see him not working for an OSS company anymore, but it doesn't help Linux much in this propaganda campaign.
I don't mind keeping DCC, I use it myself sometimes, but I see no need to improove it, it'll just draw in more people on interested in file sharing only. It won't matter what I do on my server/network, if the majority of other servers/networks give IRC such a bad rep, that it'll be almost impossible to run a legit IRC server. I also know that the files don't transfer dirrectly through my server, it works in a very simaler manner as Kazaa, and the other p2p networks, but that doesn't stop them from getting targeted by lawyers, and the like.
As an IRC Admin, all I have to say is, just fucking wonderful, all IRC needs is a better file transfer method, to bring in more scum, and drag IRC down even more. IRC Stands for Internet Relay CHAT, and while it's nice to have a way to transfer files (like on most IMs), it's gotten out of hand, and it's doing nothing but hurting us chatters on IRC. I like Kazaa, WinMX, and the like as much as anyone else here, but I also love being able to chat on IRC.
When I tell people I use IRC, more and more people say something along the lines of "yeah, much better than kazaa" or "I could never figure it out, so I still use kazaa myself", it's quite sad. ISPs hate IRC, and it's hard to find any that will let you host IRC servers, if not because of it's rep for illegal MP3s, warez, ect, it's cause of the DDoS attacks IRC attracts because of the extra scum file transferring brings.
And now they want to improve DCC, JUST FUCING WONDERFUL!
That's all great and nice, but the free version mentioned in the article doesn't include makefile support (if it's there, I haven't found out how to use it, since nmake doesn't work).
did our DOJ start giving out it's opinion on cases in other countries? I don't recall the DOJ having 'bitching and moaning about cases in other countries' in their 'job' description. For most cases they wouldn't even have access to enough of the details to be able to comment.
Hell, even in this case they could, theoreticly not have enough details to comment. Lets say, maybe, someway, somehow, Microsoft actually did only deserve the slap on the wrist the DOJ handed to them. How does the DOJ know though that they wheren't doing extra illegal stuff in Europe that they wheren't doing here, or did extra illegal stuff since the DOJ case. I mean really, the DOJ doesn't have the right to be commenting on cases in other fucking countries.
So, does this include sites that have 'dynamic' IP addresses as well? Currently they consider a lot of web hosts as having dynamic IP addresses, and force them to have to get on a whitelist (which I might add, is nearlly impossible). Does this mean now, not only will AOL users not be able to sign up for anything that requires an e-mail on my site, but that they'll now not be able to view it at all?
I sure hope it's just spammers they've blacklisted, rather than a comibnation of a blacklist, and whitelist. I can certainly see the possibility of this being even more of a problem than one would think.
Jeeze, anyone that has left ICQ running for more than an hour has gotten "spim", since the "spimmers" can do just like telemarketers do, and go through the numbers untill they get someone. I remember getting a really 'sexy' spim message one time while I was away, my dad nearlly grounded me thinking it was someone I knew that I cybered with.:(
I thought it was great at first because I lost about 10 pounds in a short 2 weeks. But the diet changed my eating habits so much that I wasn't able to keep it off when I reached my goal. I gained it all back, _plus_ an extra 10 pounds. I wouldn't recommend it. Stick with the tried-and-true ELF diet (Eat Less Food) combined with a 15-30 minutes of excercise every few days and the weight will come off eventually. It will take longer, but it will actually stay off.
This will happen with ANY diet. Diets arn't just ment to be used untill you reach your goal, then quit, it's a life long thing. Especially with the Atkins diet, you don't just go back to your old diet, you stick with your current one. Now, you can eat more carbs (sugar) since you only need to maintain, not lose.
Both my dad and me are on the diet, and we've lost about 60 pounds each so far, and still loosing. My dad is a diebetic, I might add, and has had to STOP taking some of his meds, cause his blood sugar level was starting to get too LOW!.
or does it seem like Slashdot is no longer "News for Nerds, Stuff that matters", but instead 'Conspiracies for Nerds, Stuff that Might Matter'. Of course, maybe I just havn't been around long enough....

When was the last time you used a.NET program? I know I can't remember. When was the last time you used a java program? Oh, just a few minutes ago myself. Besides, how can.NET ever really be a long term (it might be a short term) threat to java, since you'll never be able to use.NET on anything but Windows.
Good thing there isn't an "Ignorant" moderation title, I'd probably get it.
I don't know about everyone else, but the local repeaters here are getting more and more active, rather than less, though the nets don't get much turn out. I've had my license since I was 12, and am 17 now, a Tech. I would have loved to have joined the SARA/Nanticoke(SP?) clubs for their field day this year, as I have done for serveral years, but I just have too much work to do. I'm not the most active ham, but once I get off my ass and learn code, I plan on getting on HF a lot (I passed the general writen, now just need to learn code and pass the code test).

Any company that you have a, uh... 'relationship' with, can telemarket you legally, unless you tell them not to.

Wasn't there actually an article on slashdot recently about how people where changing settings on their car computers to get better horsepower, ect?
