  2. How about biking a portion... on Staying In Shape vs. a Busy IT Job Schedule? · · Score: 1

How about biking a portion of your commute to and from work? Put a bike rack on your car and drive all but the last 5 miles, find a good place to leave your car (parking garage maybe?). Bike the last three miles into work. Reverse the process going home and you have 2 good work outs each day. Depending on the terrain (hills, highways, and so forth) you might need to adjust the actual route you take. At the most, this should cost you about 1 hour (avg 15-18 mph plus set up time). With that being said- I'm all about working with the circumstances to produce the best outcome..... but none of this will matter if your job requirement (not weight) kill you first. After all - sleepy drivers and/or people who routinely cope with high stress levels have a very high mortality rate.

  3. Your Mother's Basement is Next... on DHS Allowed To Take Laptops Indefinitely · · Score: 2, Insightful
Unfortunately, there is a direct correlation between the sentiment that the Government should take care of everything and trying to find where to draw the line. Most Americans are in favor of safety and security if it only impedes "the other guy". Most are willing to give up their rights because they feel that the chance of it impacting them is very low- so why not error on the side of caution and just give in?

I still contend that this is a simple case of an inch equaling a mile. Now they can take your electronics/personal effects and keep them as long as they want. The next reasonable step is to search your house and take your computers from your mother's basement to investigate as long as they want. After all, what is really the difference here?

Oh- it's only for those people coming into the country! How long do you think it will be before they expand it to include anyone regardless of their activity? Doesn't it make (government) sense that if people flying into the country are possibly transporting harmful data- people in the general population are as well?

We step closer to 1984 inch by inch- mile by mile.

They could require everyone to submit all backups of all data to a government clearinghouse in the name of "national security" and you would be surprised at how many people would willingly support it- because people will do anything in the name of safety.

I doubt that it makes us safer- but it does make us more like sheep.

"26? The article says 40..." I take it that math was not your strong suit? It says that they had 45% of the total, meaning that the other 55% was made up of US, Japan and China launches- 32 = 55% and 26 = 45%

Ok- so that means that Russia had what - 26 launches or so? I don't recall many of them making the news in the US. See - that is the kind of stuff I want to see make the national news for the masses- not the OMG moment of some political nut job of the day-

I think that they can hint around at it, but not ask directly. Thay can say things like "So tell me about a few personal goals you have" and wait to see if you bring it up. But they can not just come right out and ask you. I know this is a mans field, but I suspect that a comapny will take a good female code writer over a irresponsible twit anyday. Newbie or not. Or at least I am betting a ton of student loans that they will.

I knew I was behind the curve, starting formal school at 26, but this is depressing. My instructors say encouraging things like "As long as you are good at what you do, you'll do alright" and "You'll be old enough to be a perfectionist and not look arogant." But what do people like me say when we are interviewed with a critical eye looking at our age as an eliminating factor? What is the best counter-attack for this?

Researching to sell products results in better competition in business because they can offer more of what someone needs and less crap that they don't. Researching unsuspecting prospective friends/mates/victims is creepy. It would be alright if you were actively signing up for something (like a dating service or a find-a-friend service), but if this is a tactic that sites are going to just automatically enroll you in and anyone can get the results: count me out. It's just creepy!!
