in the early 80s I got a 28 on a Quantum test. That
ended up being a C+. Do you know anybody who has
ever gotten below a C in any Arts and Crafts class?
Isn't this an unprivledged port? If you block all
of those to start many of your inet based programs
that open random/rangebound high port #s wont work at all. Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable about
what to do with ports > 1024 can comment?
With all the stuff they've put on this I will be
really interested to see if the charge can last
more than a few hours. Even with a low power CPU.
Insmell and IBM should put some coin into battery development instead of billions into more cpu cycles that only a very small fraction of people
could ever hope to use.
I have both of these running side by side, and have
loaded any number of web pages, simple and complex.
Mozilla starts up smaller initally by about 4mb,
but after loading pages, with multiple tabs, they
are consistently within about 1mb of each other.
Nor can I really tell much of any difference in
speed.
As for Mozilla, I only install the browser. Not
all the other junk.
So I really can't see any benefit (yet) to
phoenix.
Still have a 100MB Toshiba MK234FC running in my
firewall box. Got this drive 2nd hand in 1991
over the net from a guy at Univ Chigago. Its been
running 24/7 ever since. By far my most reliable
drive, and its been in quite a few systems.
This is why all the high end PDA's are a waste of
time and money. Who wants to be running to the
store for batteries every day or having to remember
to recharge twice a day, or face the consequences?
The internet is not, and probably never will be the
primary news source. Radio and TV are *live*
mediums, available virtually anywhere at any time.
Major events appear in real-time with audio and
video. And unlike the internet, TV and Radio
short of EMP are hardened to failures in power and
other events. Take out a few key routers and where
does that leave your net access?
their boards are already a reach for many they
market to.. where is Jake heading with this? Are we
gonna have a special tissue compartment next? Or
something to blow our noses for us like lift
attendents at Deer Valley or Squallywood? Sad..
There is no distinction.. its all unsolicited email.
I hope as more states come up with criminal/civil
penalties for spamming, they include a provision
for fining/suing the originating customer of the
spammer. Ie, if BigCompany XYZ highers spammer ABC
, both ABC and XYZ are liable. Hiring a person to
perform a knowingly criminal act for you is also a
crime.
I preface this with the fact I hate everything about MSFT, but I can't let stand such blatant bs
as has been posted.
First off get your SEC forms straight. 10K is the
annual filing, 10Q is the quaterly filing. Second,
from the 10K of Sept. 2001:
And from the income statement
Provision for Income Taxes 4,854 (mios)
Go read the whole thing on Edgar
Why won't Joe Lieberman bring in Rubin for questioning over the his pressuring people in and
out of government not to downgrade Enron's debt last fall? So there you have 2 Dems of high power who also don't want to get to the bottom of things. One becuase of politcal aspirations teh other because of financial aspirations. I also wonder what might come out of any testimony by Rubin about when he was head of Treasury Dept. and what he may or may not have done to help Enron then.
Thank you for spelling out the A.Gore involvement..
in any event perhaps the worst direct abuse by the
telecoms are fees some add now that in effect make
you pay for the depreciation on their offices.
most of what makes our phone bills so offensive
can be traced back to the Federal government, ie
FCC, Al Gore, etc. Take a look at all the
taxes and surcharges, add them up and find out what
% of your phone bill they are. On mine they are 40%.
other than to sell a gadzillion "Java in Minutes"
books? Which is the cart and which the horse here?
Buzz words, media frenzies, etc seem to drive all
'advances' in computing these days, Java acceptance
and use in particular.
and even worse customer service. My VAIO laptop
experience was so bad I will not buy anything
made by sony again. Think long and hard before
putting your hard earned $ on a vaio
"Teachers need to give their students the tools to allow them to figure out the reading material on their own, "
So why doesn't the principal just give out the reading list at the start of the year and skip
the teachers?
"That is what happens in the real world, right? Who explains the material you need to learn as part of your job to you?"
Apples to oranges and hardly correct. A 8 yr old
or 15 yr old does not have the same base of
knowledge to draw from as a 25yr or 50yr old.
Further, no that is not always how it happens on
the job. You are usually hired to do a job that
you have some degree of competency. After that,
many people are sent to school/training
to learn additional skills their employer belive
valuable.
"Kids, as adults, learn by thinking, creating, researching, revising, and sharing. These are all things that computers help us to do. I would love to give each of my students a full laptop, with wireless network connections, a fast pipe to the net, and ample storage. I just doubt that $1200+ "
You have yet to explain the use of computers in
any of these. I previously pointed out researching. Does the computer think for them?
Does it revise for them? Does it share for them?
Does it create for them (and if so what?)?
It sounds more like you are saying computers make
the kids life easier (revising) and researching (perhaps too easy). Sharing? What happened to
sitting down with a classmate to work on a project?
What *is* it that you use the computer for that
makes it so valuable that students are at a
disadvantage if each one doesnt have their own?
How has having massive amounts of computers in
the school systems increased grades? Has it?
"Instead, kids could use this limited device (at a 1/3 of the cost) to create work, collect data, share with others (irda works great for text), hand stuff in to me, and print out final copies for their portfolios and to take home. Looks like it comes with a word processor, spreadsheet, and other basic tools. A powerful web browser and fast connection would be great, but this is a start."
So the school system is meant to spend hundreds of
bucks for each kid so that they have an easier time
of writing a paper? To make more room in your
briefcase?
If its not painfully obvious by now I think:
1-computers are for teaching programming
2-computers are for providing web access in a
a controlled research environment (library)
3-computers are not a substitute for the 3 'R's
"As a teacher, I would love 30 or so for my classroom."
In the 20 years since PC's have become popular all
we keep hearing is that schools need more and more
of them otherwise 'johnny won't learn'. Is there
even one study that shows conclusively (or even
close) that computers in fact lead to better grades?
The poster wants 30 of these in class.. for what?
I can see having computers available in the library
as a reference tool for kids doing papers and
what not. But not in every classroom. Don't
teachers actually teach anymore? Don't they explain
the assignments and reading material? Or do they
just say 'ok class go to www.....

4.8MB/sec... thats at least 9 hours just to back up 180Gb.

Any board that would do that in this climate after events at Tyco is whacked.

Enron gave a boatload of money to anybody who would take it. The Dems stink too.

So then take your own solution and just 'dont read it'

So how secure are these wireless nets to sniffing? Does the FBI even need a warrant for wireless?
