I pay 5c a minute 24/7.. so lets see.. i can get
400 minutes for my $20 or 800 for the $40.. and I
know it works 99.9999% of the time with near
perfect quality. 13+ hours on the phone per month
would be quite a long time
If you don't like it here, leave. Your dozens of
pageviews per day only cost more money for
Slashdot, and the fact that you don't subscribe
doesn't help matters.
Is this the new club for editors to use over speech

"Your comment is stupid and you don't pay us so leave"
"Your comment is a troll and you don't pay us so leave"
"You said something I dont like and you don't pay

In fact one machine I use has 1GB, the other has 368. The 1GB machine is the home machine. You
need to stop thinking in terms of self. $200
for decent memory x 100 workstations = $20,000.
Just extend the math out for your larger operations.
The point is people are throwing away ram (and disk)
in many cases for no good reason. Probably the
same could be said for CPU cycles.
Speak for yourself buddy. Anybody running multiple
applications knows how quick you can chew up 300MB.
And I'm not talking about doing graphics work. I
work in the financial industry and my basic daily
setup eats up 270Mb to start. Open a pdf in your
web browswer and tack on another 20+ until you
manually kill the acrobat task.
Its a really bad attitude to have that ram use
doesnt matter. Its just an invitation to more
sloppy programing and feature bloat.

you not read or comment on:
Antarctic ozone hole
NASA TOMS satellite
Cosmic conspiracy. Cosmic rays could be a major contributor to ozone destruction over Antarctica.
Cosmic rays may be enlarging the hole in the ozone layer, according to a study appearing in the 13 August print issue of PRL . Researchers analyzed data from several sources, and found a strong correlation between cosmic ray intensity and ozone depletion.

so how much *does*/. cost to run? Even tossing in
some reasonable profit margin, say 15%?
If you take the "1/3 of a million" users a day (I
guess that sounded better than 300,000), if 5%
actually pay $5/ month thats hmmm $75,000/mo.
So what needs to be counted.. servers.. bandwidth..
editors salary? (No need to pay for content as
it comes for free!)
I'm not involved in websites or hosting so I really
*dont* know. But I'm curious to see what those
who *do* know think it cots?
I dont begrudge these guys trying to make some
coin. Don't get me wrong. But I wouldn't care
how much it was if they actually provided the
content, which they dont.
Did you even read the press release? They seem
to think the main benefit of this chip is not the
speed but the reduced power usage.
from the wire service release:
Mr. Myerson says that one of the most important features of the new chip is
that it uses much less power at slightly slower speeds. Power consumption is
becoming important because, "Surprisingly, power has become a limitation,"
on making faster devices, he notes.
The new chips will be able to handle 40 billion bits of information a
second, making them suitable for the latest standard high-speed rate of data
transmission, and use the same power as chips handling the current
10-billion-bit standard.
Achim Hill, chief executive officer of Sierra Monolithics Inc., a Redondo
Beach, Calif., maker of telecommunications components, says that using the
IBM-designed chips will help Sierra cut costs and "give common carriers the
incentive they need to make capital expenditures." He said carriers find as
much as 30% of their operating expenses are buying power, so the low power
features are likely to be appealing.
What troubles me is that the box makers are
essentially pushing RedHat to be a defacto standard,
essentially synonymous with Linux, which it is not.
Regardless of how high your regard for RH, there
are other distros (key word there!) that are also
excellent, including some that might be better
suited for a particular environment.
That said, I think it would be better for them to
sell the box empty, give you a choice of getting
XP,2K,RH,Suse,Debian,Slack,BSD,etc install disks,
and further, paying an additional (nominal) fee
to have said OS pre-installed. At the least,
offer the other distros, and maybe only offer
the preinstall option for what they feel are
'prefered' OS's.
2 tapes from the mid 80's written on a 2060. I've
wanted to get a copy of whats on them off to CDR
but have been put off by the large $$ people try
to charge to do this. And now the machines will
be disappearing.. oh well.
Indirectly related to this, Genuity has begun to
cap Earthlink DSL lines in the NYC area. Prior to
this you could (if close) get near 1.5 Mbps down
and 300+ Kbps up. But apparently part of the
contract between Earthlink and Genuity allows
Genuity to cap lines at their discretion and they
have cut customers down to 768/128. Gee.. couldnt
be because Verizon owns Genuity?
Is it really prudent to be advertising our location
like this? Why is it always assumed that any alien
civilization that hears a message from us would want
to be our friends?
Many years ago I was an Accounting and Physics double major and Comp Sci Minor. I got out with
something on order of 150 credits. Looking at what
the MIS types are saying, it seems to me to make
much more sense to get the CS degree and take the
business/management and other MIS like classes as
your electives. Theres nothing to say you can't
take 18 credits a semester with an occasional
summer class. And yes, you can still party if you
figure out how to manage your time.
I have had qwest for about 3 years on the east coast
and have not had any problems with billing or usage, excepting some problems around 9/11. I am not happy
about htis privacy thing, but from a service stand
point it has all been good.
Its called compatability with the rest of the
business world. The last time I used star office
(about a year ago) it was not good enough to take
a complex excel sheet with out problems.
If MicroSloth really wanted to port Office to an
X environment they could (long ago). But clearly
this would endanger their OS share in the workplace
and thats a nono. Why should anybody expect them
to act differently so long as they are immune from
prosecution? They are maximizing their profits,
just like you would if you could too.
Who's to say the MS doesn't include magic lantern
bundled with the OS distribution CD's? Could the
FBI get them to add the code into the nt kernel or
other 'necessary' apps? How would you know?
47,000 customers? I'm shedding tears. Wireless
inet is hardly a do or die thing to anybody, nor the
economy. Really. When even the library has data ports, how long is anybody really away from net access that it truely makes a difference?
If bandwidth were such a pricey commodity for these big ISPs then companies such as GX and MFNX would not be CH11.
As a past owner of a VAIO laptop.. dont do it!
batterylife: sucks
quality: ah..wheres that goat sex site?
warranty: hahahahaha
never ever will I buy a SONY product again
'yes we'll fix it for you. It needs a new motherboard, that will be $1150'
'But a new one at same speed is $1000!'
'then go buy the new one'

How many times must we read about this on /. ???
if they buy RedHat they are buying a distribution and a service company - not an OS.
