well.. for what its worth I picked up a pair of the new 20" formacs last december. My process was: a) how much screen space do I need b) what physical monitor dimensions work (b more or less ruled out traditional CRTs, but even so I researched a few) c) what characteristics do I need it to have d) waht are non-traditional reviews saying (IE not PC mag or their ilk). So for me, I needed a lot of screen space, a smaller foot print as I'm already too close to the screens. That pushed me towards LCD. My needs are divergent - much time spent with generic text based stuff, but also a need for accurate color for photography stuff as well as speedy refresh for games (no ghosting!). I found CAD industry reviews helpful. Ended up with the formacs as they use a new technology that results in faster pixel refresh, and they are excellent at producing accurate color. Toss in the 2 dead pixel guaranty and it fit my needs.

I have two email addresses that get 95% of my email - one since 1990 and the other from 1994 and do a fair amount of purchasing and usenet posting (the past few years with my email blocked - but its certainly in the archives), but I dont think I've ever had more than 100k in a day. The shortage is on the revenue side. And before you whine about 'tax breaks for the rich' - 1) the majority of the cuts take place after 2005 and hence are not part of current shortfalls and 2) they only amount to about 1/3 of the shortfall. The States and local municipalities are guilty of even worse pie in the sky revenue and economic prediction than the feds, which is why they find themselves in this situation. Spending was ramped up in response to unsustainable revenue streams generated by bubble tech economy and capital gains on stock profits taken during the bubble. Now we see the flip side - a bear market with capital losses on the tax forms and a lack of income from those high tech darlings of 97-00.
