I can't say I like the sci-fi aspect of RTCW, but the single player version of the game definately has its momments. I love the final level of the church mission, where you're given a ton of ammo and have to face down a transmorgified Helga. It's hilarious. The sexy-bondage-nazi-nija-chicks are pretty funny too.
Either that or it was caused by the very existence of the Shuttle in the first place. The more I read about the Shuttle the more irritating it becomes. As a child I followed the development of the Shuttle the way others followed sports heros. As an adult I find the waste and uselessness of the Shuttle contemptible.
Your point is valid. I don't mean to detract or counter it. This just seems like a good place to remind Slashdot readers that NASA is not entirely an end in itself. Outside of military satellites or anything else our government could just as easily send up in good ol' fashioned unmanned rockets that always worked before. NASA serves Science -- and could do so more effectively if it weren't wasting cash on a dated publicity vehicle.
Ignoring what we could have done better is what has left us stuck with this orbiting Pinto in the first place. Institutions have a certain inertia that makes people throw good money after bad. Apparently it's so strong that an entire crew has to be killed twice before anyone is willing to admit that the Shuttle has always been a crap idea. NASA's flagship has been a sinkhole that eats cash from its very inception. We could have dumped it back in the late '70s when it became obvious there were better ways of investing our science dollar -- but why sulk over the fact that it can't do what we said it would? Let's just throw another 3M duct tape division at the problem and carry on!
Certainly you only mean that regret should be mobilized towards making a better future. But would you say, "Coulda. Woulda. Shoulda." to the famillies of the dead? Even now that they know their loved ones could have survived if only NASA had tried? Should we say to them, "Forget about it. We'll have others up in LEO babysitting ant farms in no time."?
Your aside reminds me of something Benjamin Disraeli once said: "I am deeply sorry for the unkind things I said about Liverpool. I had not seen Leeds at the time."
The question is -- for the ignorant -- how exactly does one do that completely?
Here's the rub: OK, so wireless ether has WEP. BUT we know that it is easy to crack (Uhh, not that I'd do anything like `apt-get install airsnort'). If you are stingy with your bandwith and want to keep the neighbors out how can you at least keep them from sniffing your traffic? Would piping everything through ssl do it? Is that not possible? There are finer heads out there. Prevail, if you would please.
...the OS offloads a large portion of the graphic rendering to the GPU.
This just isn't true. Jaguar taps OpenGL to "composite" multiple windows on to one display, but that is it. Most of the drawing work is still done by the CPU.
Putting GPUs to work on non-display oriented tasks is a good idea. Ideally, one would want to treat the GPU like a co-processor whos "instruction set" starts where MMX/SSE/SSE2 ends. The hitch to be dealt with is that the card and driver combination is designed to spit its results on to a display instead of back main to memory. The AGP bus is very fast, but in only one direction. IIRC, this is a limitation in the drivers.
Could you provide us with a link that might back up that claim? On the face of it I find it very hard to believe that Microsoft has any need or desire to tack specialized scientific library routines dealing with linear algebra and FFTs on to an API designed for video games. This alternate use of GPU horsepower is being used in rarefied environments where they write custom solutions to specific problems. Even if there were a market for such a library I don't see why Microsoft would be the ones to write it or why they would integrate it with DirectX rather than promote it separately.
A low ping is the first advantage one can have, but any tech edge is destroyed by the way game makers have to include the Rocket/Bazooka type weaponry that appeals to youngsters.

There is more development, more documentation, and more user support than any other distro that exists currently.
Including Debian?

Let me know when I can spend $70 on a Gentoo box set that includes printed manuals and installation media that doesn't require a days-long `make world'.
Is there really much left of the RTCW MP community? The last time I checked, half the available servers were running Beach.

Well, I compiled the DRI drivers on my powerbook (ATI 7500 M7) and thought the performace was really good -- your anecdote against mine.
Right here.
Those definitions don't sound rough to me at all. You have hit the nail on the head.
You should talk to this guy.

Its good to hear they'll leave Martian TV stations alone.
I once paid a $16 bill with $21 and got the same reaction.
That word sounds uncorrect.
I can't believe you haven't been for your wit modded up.
This makes me chuckle, but really now... Why not?
You've got to be kidding. They're built around 2.5" laptop drives.
What's up with the way Apple computers always "smoke" their brethern? An Apple never "out performs" or "runs faster".
Copy and Paste the `rm' text into a terminal window. I didn't read the space at first either.
But then wouldn't you risk alienating gay male programmers?
