    Someone proposed (sorry, don't remember who) that there should be an energy discount for people living near power plants. The further away you live, the more you pay for you electricity. Seems reasonable.

    On a side note, I drive past the Livermore windmills every day. I think they're pretty cool. I refer to the area as the "propeller farm".

    It's not illegal for a single company to set their price at whatever they want. It is illegal for an entire industry to get together and decide what everyone will charge to maximizing screwing the customer.

    As much as I hate spammers (slow torture is the proper punishment for them), I don't like the precedence it would make. Give the government a little "secret power" for one situation, and they'll start expanding it into everything.

    The possibility for abuse is far too great. Every single extra bit of power given to the government has been abused. WITHOUT EXCEPTION!

    After seeing that video clip of the guy who was caught cheating at a LAN party, two things came to mind.

    1. Assault. The "security" guys were guilty of assault. You can NOT even touch someone. You can demand they leave and call the police if they refuse, but don't lay a finger on them. You can go to jail for this type of stuff.

    2. Destruction of private property. Throwing the persons computer with great force into the parking lot had the expected result of destroying the computer. This is definately a civil offense. It may be a criminal offense in some jurisdictions.

    The people running the event could have been open for some serious litigation had the person persued the matter.

    I'm not condoning cheaters. I agree that they should be removed from the event. The wrong tactics, however, can gurantee you can never sponser another event because of liability problems.

    You want to make sure you have liability insurance so you don't get sued out of existence by some asshole who trips over his own feet and breaks his leg because he hasn't slept in 72 hours.

    Of course. Besides, only rules my wife agrees with actually count. You can't imagine the battle involved with getting a pre-teen to stop using yahoo mail and use our own mail server. I've even offered to register a domain of her choosing so she won't be embarrassed by our family name domain (see above). She's very stubborn, but I have one main advantage, she doesn't know the password to the router. I can turn off her net access any time I want. In fact, I have done so a few times (2 days was the longest).

    I control DNS, too. Yes, you could easily get around that, but I know my daughter's technical skills (for the moment, at least).

    Exactly the reason I use it.

    Some time back I had suggested a feature be added to SA for email accounts used by children. Basically, I wanted some way to penalize "porny" words even more given the setting "juvenile = 1". The idea was rejected because of the difficulty implementing dual rule sets.

    I still think it was a good idea, even if it isn't technically practical.

    This is why I run my own mail server. With SpamAssassin, nearly all spam is nuked. There's still a very small amount of stuff slipping through, but none have reached my daughter's mailbox (yet). When one does, I will definately go after the company responsible if they are US based (not much I can do about the foreign based companies).

    I meant to say "other animals" or something like that.

    Second, we need a clear definition of what is sentience. Let's toss out the PETA definition since using their rules would include insects and possibly even plants.

    So what is sentience? My personal definition is the ability to ask a simple question, "why am I here". Note that the ability to answer this question is not necessary (humans have been arguing this point for a rather long time without success). Sentience is the ability to wonder about things beyond "food, shelter, reproduce" - sadly, a large number of humans haven't evolved beyond this.

    A few members of the ape family have shown some rather interesting sentient-like behavior, but as I said in my previous post - it is only hints.

    Despite my arguing against animal sentience, I am not promoting cruelty to animals. I am very much against any type of cruelty to animals of any sort. I stopped eating veal after learning of the conditions in that industry (and I love veal!).

    Animals are not sentient. Some members of the ape family might be on the edge of sentience and just need a little "push" to cross that border, but they aren't there yet. Dolphins aren't even close. Only one create on this planet has reached sentience - humans.

    The people of Oregon, in their infinite wisdom, have repeatedly rejected a gas tax increase. The government tries various methods to get around this rejection.

    Let's put it another way. The people have decided the government already has enough money and refuse to give them more. The government thinking up new and innovative ways to screw citizens out of their hard earned money ignores the basic fact that they were already told no.

    No means no, damn it!

    Make sure taxes collected for a specific reason are spent for that reason and not put into the general fund. I bet the gasoline tax was implemented to provide the funds to maintain the roads and highways. How much is collected? How much is actually spent on road maintanence? Ask your elected officials to account for the missing money.

    Of course a spammer can't get that kind of performance from a low end box. You're too busy getting stuck in tarpits and other spam traps. Normal people don't have to worry about them and get much better performance.

    My hope is one day your job will be made illegal and with serious prison time attached. Then I might be able to remove the RBLs and SpamAssassin filters.

    Non-competes are not enforceable in the state of California. It's perfectly legitimate for a company to demand you not divulge company secrets when you change jobs, but they can not prevent you from working in your field of expertise.

    The last time an employment contract had a non-compete clause in it, I crossed it out and initialed it. I also told the HR person I had done so and explained that it wasn't enforceable in this state. It did not affect the hiring. Actually, at that point they couldn't refuse to hire me since they had already made the offer which I had accepted. If they had refused to hire me for my unwillingness to sign an unenforceable contract, they would have been open to all kinds of litigation.

    I didn't say I was against the whole idea. I'm just a little unsure of it. First, it seems to give more control to the movie industry (though they aren't as bad as the record industry - not yet). Second, that's a lot of plastic going into the landfill. Third, being a clerk at blockbuster isn't exactly a great job, but for some, it's all they can get.

    However, there is a nice convience factor to disposable DVDs, but is it worth it considering the negative aspects?

    I stopped playing diablo2x on battle.net because of the cheaters. It was no fun. We created our own private realm (using bnetd) to have a cheat free environment. An added side benefit was our ability to implement our own game mods. I'll never go back to battle.net. Also, I won't ever again buy a Blizzard game because of their lawsuit against the bnetd project. They lost a good customer (not that they care).

    The movie industry hates when anyone but themselves make money off of movies. They don't like the fact that Blockbuster is a successful business. To them, blockbuster is stealing their money. Self-destructing dvds is an attempt to put the movie rental shops out of business.

    Jamaica, I forget what year. The government decided to reduce violent crimes by banning all private ownership of firearms. When the deadline arrived and all the guns had been turned in, thugs armed with machettes and guns (oooh, what a surprise!) roamed throughout the towns committing unspeakable acts against the more affluent.

    Europe, all the damn time. There are riots in so called modern and civilized cities of Western Europen every year, if not every month. Paris is a powder keg. I expect a huge riot to occur within a year.

    I'll just finish with this statement, violent crime in London has spiraled out of control. Violent crime in the U.S. has been dropping steadily. You are safer in American cities than in London.
