I just bought two acer one netbooks for the office. They came with windows which I rapidly replaced with Ubuntu UNR and they look damn nice.
My office has been running Ubuntu for 6 months and as the staff are familiar with it, Ubuntu on the netbook is "familiar" to them.
In fact, after using Ubuntu, my staff are hooked. My Secretary even brought her personal laptop in to me to have windows replaced with Ubuntu.
I agree though, the problem with linux on netbooks is the dumbed down interface. When you get a machine with XP it is just the normal desktop. If they stick Linux on them with a normal and more familiar desktop setup, they would see far less people returning them.
My Office runs Ubuntu Linux and uses OpenOffice. This is just another good reason why my decision to dump windows completely from the office was a very good business decision.
For the rest, Microsoft just made piracy 10x more attractive to them.;)
You know, did just that today as I converted the last of the windows machines in my office. The office manager shook his head as I easily ran synaptic on his machine and showed him a better way to find software to install than the windows way;)
I suppose I could have just SSH in and done "sudo apt-get install skype" for him, but this way was flashier:D
Yes, of course I was being funny.:)
It's all well and good making a virus for Linux, but the virus writer not only has to dupe the Linux user into manually downloading the virus, he also has to socially engineer the Linux user to install it, preferably with root privileges in order to actually do any real damage.
Why bother going through all that when you can just set up a web page or send some spam to auto infect windows users instead?
It's unfair. I clicked the link in the email, and it told me to update flash, but the flash updater I downloaded from their site doesn't work on my computer.
How am I supposed to see the CNN videos if they don't make a linux version? Linux sux, I'm going back to windows.:(
"Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP Media Center 2005, Mac OSX 10.3 or Mac OSX 10.4 is required to view this page"
How insulting. It appears that since they decided they get enough traffic anyway that they can just cut off part of their audience by using some proprietary crud where a cross platform option to allow everyone full access would have been sufficient. At what point in a website's popularity do you stop writing code that runs on everything in order to maximise your potential audience?
Also Swiss Air, and Qatar Airlines from my recent experience. The Linux based in flight entertainment system is becoming a familiar sight and something I look forward to when flying longer haul sections of flight.
I know what you mean. Last month I had a plane to catch and when I arrived at the local train station to travel to the airport at 5:30am, the ticket machine was displaying a blue screen running win2k. Needless to say I was forced to jump the barrier with my luggage and get a free 10 euro trip to the airport. The guard at the other end didn't believe my reason I had no ticket until I showed him the picture I took of the blue screen. Turns out he was an Ubuntu Linux fan and let me through with a laugh.:D
Court:
HardDrives, perhaps?
White House:
Ah! We have HardDrives, yes sir.
Court:
You do! Excellent.
White House:
Yes, sir. It's, ah..... it's a bit old.
Court:
Oh, I like it old.
White House:
Well, it's very old, actually, sir.
Court:
No matter. Fetch hither those HardDrives full of Emails! M-mmm!
White House:
I think it's a bit older than you'll like it, sir.
Court:
I don't care how fucking old it is. Hand it over with all speed.
White House:
Oh.....
Court:
What now?
White House:
The Condi's eaten it.
Court:
Has he?
White House:
She, sir.
It's really quite simple. Make linux native binaries for the games and we will buy them. I just spent $100 on Steam buying Valve's current catalogue but I rebooted into windows to do it. I would rather not have to reboot and just do it through linux.
So Mr Developer, if you make a Linux version, we will buy it! Or at very least, make your windows version, then give use an installer and linux binary as an optional download on your website like ID did with Doom etc...
Maybe Gentoo is a better choice for that hardware. I had it installed on a PII 266Mhz laptop with 128mb Ram and it ran better than win 2k on the same hardware.
Seconded, thirded and fourthed! http://www.getmiro.com/
I waste hours at a time catching up on the shows with Miro. I have all the Revision 3 stuff like Diggnation, Webdrifter. Totally Rad Show etc.. and quite a few more. This is the real future of TV.
Oh, and http://www.purepwnage.com/ is the most awesome of all:D
I was about to say the border Guards in Belarus, well known for being class A a-holes, are getting tougher these days. That was until I started to read all this stuff about the US.
Remind me never to visit.
There is a simple solution to all this DRM nonsense and this person even having his unrelated hardware purchases influenced by the DRM is a good enough reason to just not buy DRM content and where you can't get it legally without DRM just to Pirate it!
Vote with your Wallet! F**k DRM in it's bug ridden a$$.

I wanna know who keeps cutting the cables to Egypt and the rest of the Middle East. Talk about knocking out sections of infrastructure.
Yeah you heard me. Screw the Embargo. My company does business with Iranians and the US can swear black and blue at me. I still won't stop.
Good on HP. The Iranians need printers too.

Thank God I left France and moved to Egypt for more freedom :D
Why no mention of the frikkin sharks with frikkin laser beams attached to their heads?
You get FAT from Microsoft?
:D
You get BEARD from Linux.
Choose Open Source, the healthy alternative.

My eyes hurt now after all that Magenta madness! Damn you T-mobile :p

Creative Audigy and Nvidia Geforce 9600GT all working fine here without editing a single text file here. Ubuntu 7.10. May I see some retraction? :)
I got the MSI 9600GT and it's cool enough and very quiet even after stressing it out with Crysis.
