If you want to develop a closed source product, and the product is good, it will sell. There are many successful closed source projects out there in Linux/BSD land. You have to be extra careful about bugs though. The OSS community makes more noise when your code is buggy, and they aren't allowed to come in and fix it for you.;)
Last night I was playing call of duty 2 and one of the German soldiers picked up the grenade I threw at him and chucked it back at me. That was a surprise:D
Of course they are right to search these phones. You never know where the terrorists are hiding. These evil students could make one sms message and bam! A building falls down for no good reason.;)
I pay for a 20Mbps connection, yet I get barely 1.5-2Mbps. That's the thing that sux about living in a poor area of town. Nobody can be bothered fixing up the local telephone exchange.:/
Yet they've been doing this for years. Nothing has really changed.
You are right and wrong. They have been doing it for years, but before the Patriot Act they had to have due cause and a warrant from a judge and they had to give him a very good reason.
Now, all that is gone and they don't have to have a good reason to do it. They just have to say its part of an investigation and they get rubber stamped approval on the spot. Or in some cases not even that.
In my opinion you cease to be a Lunx n00b when you can
1) Install or uninstall a program
2) Know how to do basic tasks in the console
3) Know how to look for a solution to a problem on the web before harrasing others before you even try it yourself
The way to handle a Linux n00b is to help them get the system started, then tell them to RTFM. Give them the URL's to helpful wikis and forums and tell them to find out for themselves how to do things and then help them when they are hopelessly stuck after having tried themselves and perhaps learned a thing or two.
I recently helped a n00b get into Ubuntu. I gave him a quick lesson on BASH commands, how to install stuff and then left him to his own devices. 2 weeks later he is a happy Linux user and has few questions for me to answer.
In the end, the bad guys will use real encryption and the backdoor won' effect them. It will only serve as a security risk for legitimate users.
Well said. Now it's out in the open I can see thousands of nasty people busily preparing the 1st wave of Vista viruses exploiting backdoors created for "Big Brother". I wouldn't surprised if Vista was like a swiss cheese of backdoors put in to comply with the "Patriot" Act. They should move development out of the US to a country with more freedoms.;)
What about DRM that prevents you from copying your CD onto your MP3 player? Will this become illegal in Australia since it would impinge on your right to do so under the law?
Here's hoping. This is a win for the rights of the people to watch or listen to content they paid for at their own convenience or device of choice.:D
Until I can get in France, by cable or satellite, my favourite shows and movies in the original English, I reserve the right to download and watch the English versions while my wife and kids can watch the French versions on the cable I pay for. All I can get is BBC News24, CNN etc.. and none of them show what I want.
So, are they going to pay a licence fee for use of the Firefox icon?;) I know, it isn't like that, but I'm sure if it were the other way around, M$ would be screaming to the courts over copyright infringement.
Too many "Pop Idol" quick buck schemes out there. People are getting tired of manufactured stars. But the music industry execs are too up themselves to put the blame on anyone but themselves. I deal with them all the time and have seen them pass up great albums for stupid excuses like, "Its fantastic, but the songs don't sound like each other so we dont know how to market it"
So many brilliant songs and bands are getting rejected because they just dont fit into a neat pigeon hole.
I agree with keeping it simple. KDE tends to confuse new users with it's complexity. I personally find it annoying.
When I install Linux for a new user in an office situation, the best combination for me has been Ubuntu with Gnome as a desktop, then create big icons on the desktop pointing to the user's most used applications and voila, they never complain ever again:D
Yes! Disguised as a radio telescope, Dr Evil's secret base deep inside an extinct volcano is almost complete. Just a few finishing touches including delivery of the tank full of frikkin sharks with frikkin laser beams on their heads and the world will tremble at the foot of Dr Evil! Muhahahahahaha!
lol. That was the first thing that came into my head. This is just like the game "Thief". Video games are good. Video games help create advancements in society!
Heck, Windows Update often runs without rebooting.
Except for the times it updates in the background then interrupts the game I am playing every 5 minutes with a pop-up demanding that I reboot and without an option to ignore and reboot later.
Updates without reboots are normal on my linux machines. The only time I ever reboot them is for major kernel upgrades.

I get heaps of these spams for some reason, but they are of no use to me. I trade Currencies on the Foreign Exchange, not stocks :D

Hahah Nice one. It's been well and truly Slashdotted. It's been knocked off line hehe :D
heh :) Thats how I read it. Dyslexia sets in. ;)

In world where Nvidia does not exist.

I'll be buying the DVD for sure, even if it is just to see River kick Reaver butt again :D

You can play Anarchy Online one handed no problem. I do it all the time with my baby daughter falling asleep in my lap. Perhaps he should try AO.

No problem here on Gentoo. As there is no 1.5 in portage yet, I'm using the downloaded binary version from Mozilla.
Updates without reboots are normal on my linux machines. The only time I ever reboot them is for major kernel upgrades.
That's funny, but if I ever bumped into this guy, I'd rip him a new open source ;)
Come on. It only takes about an hour to compile from source on an Athlon XP 2800+ CPU. ;)
Don't be lazy
