Because the last time someone talked about groups of people being more or less intelligent they did it to find a way to justify the killing of the "inferior races". Millions died. So yeah the subject is touchy.
This time "it worked" because the previous victims (the "inferior race") are qualified as more intelligent, if it were the other way round the author would have had to publish on white supremacist sites.
The implied meaning is that if things would not go bad for them they would not care to offer any improvements. Yes that's what some companies do, that's why it's a good idea to use open source software (and open standards) so you'll not be tied in to a company and their idiotic policies.
We (and many other animals) CAN eat both because we're built that way.
Who built us that way? Evolution? Than it means that we were not built in a specific way... we got how we are because it was advantageous from the evolution point of view.
I heard many people complaining about password being stupid but the stupid here is the system that lets somebody try to enter the password more than 5 times.
How about debit card PINs? They are only 4 digits... They seem to be adequately secure.
NO SYSTEM SHOULD ALLOW ANYONE TO TRY TO ENTER A PASSWORD MORE THAN 5 TIMES.
Well... the guy doesn't have posts moded above -1 in a long time (at least as long as I can see). So, why bother responding? There are way to many idiots in this world...

I think you are right about the jolt. Most of the people I know came to Linux after their computer got a virus or after they calculated how much would cost to buy all the programs they need. Money come before freedom for most of the people and I don't have any illusion that things are different, fortunately open source software is gratis most of the times -- so at least there's another incentive there.
Nevertheless Firefox has so many people enthusiastic about it not only because it's standard compliant and good technology but exactly because it's free. Opera in my opinion and experience is better, still you don't see so many people enthusiastic about Opera exactly because it's not free. Freedom counts no matter what you say. Same thing with Linux distros, you'll see more people enthusiastic about Ubuntu and other distros that were declared to be free and remain free (money and freedom) and less people backing commercial distros.
I can understand that you see yourself as a skeptical person and that you try to see the practical side of the issues, don't forget though that people are moved by ideas too... freedom is still a powerful idea (although highly overused and devalued in its use)
Well... it brought me. I might be unique, but my guess I'm not the only one who switched for these not so practical reasons.
And if you tell Joe User than his SUV could be fueled only from authorised gas station that sell gas 10 times more expensive than other stations and he could drive only on "authorised by manufacturer" roads and that he will be commit a illegality if he changes by himself the oil without manufacturer approval he will get the freedom idea.

John C. Dvorak actually predicted something that happend!.
Even better, he predicted something that might happen. Oh, wait...
letting other do evil when you can stop it is evil... but let's not get into the laws of robotics and their potential effects ;)
Actually that's a good idea. I'd like to have the same system for article as we have for posts.
Well most comic book heroes have great powers, or amazing tools and weapons and um...oh yeah...They Don't Exist!
...you just ruined my illusions. Next time you'll say there's no Santa.
Thank you!
But if the world goes to 100% open source, innovation goes to zero. The open source guys hate it when I say this, but it's true.
What a bunch of crap. That like saying that when there was no licence system there was no innovation in the world.

I think I just got the facts without the "independent" analysis paid by Microsoft.
I posted before, there's no connection between freedom and communism (actually there is: communists restrain other people freedom).
Oh, man, I never laught so hard. :)
Good one

So... it only remains for them to die fighting, right?
They will lose. Free + freedom is too much even for MS, they will not be able to fight it off.
Netcraft confirms: "IE is dying"
Can't believe no one jumped on this one, what happens? No more immature jokes on slasdot?
Ah, ok, I got it now.

Sorry for nitpicking...
Who needs intergalactic political correctness?
That's what Star Trek is, right? Each episode shows a P.C. issue and how it's solved by the wonderful crew of Enterprise or Voyager...
Why tell people that they can use for free better software?
One thing that I can think of is that hardware and software vendors will take Linux into consideration if Linux marketshare would be higher.
Also, there a fundamental moral issue here: if you can do good to somebody should you or should you not act? (of course without forcing it on anyone)
The more people that are using a product, the better it is.
Yeah... take for example Windows... ah, wrong example.
The joke was funny, I just made a (separate) point... if you allow me...
There's no such thing as eastern-bloc accent.
Some languages do not even belong to the same family language. Take Russian, Romanian and Hungarian for example, three totally different languages...

Problem solved!
I don't see why would you need a PATENT to help people.
