Coke never mention "pepsi" in their advertising (well, not in Oz anyway). So MS would be better off saying "our product is the best." rather than "our product is better than linux"
Im not an American. The way I see it, the US Govt loves MS because they bring in billions into the US economy. Sure, its good for people in the US but not so good for others in the world.
This is why nothing really happened with the anti-trust lawsuit a few years ago (yes, im speculating, I know).
At least the world economy will be better off thanks to FOSS.
Exactly right. Ms should be ignoring it and when questioned just say "what is this linux thingo you talk of?":D
Seriously, Im not sure which attack is better here, because if MS were to ignore OS, then the geeks (us) would sit here talking about it and telling our friends etc etc. It would continue to grow as normal. Perhaps some people believe this bs that MS is making atm? I think there would be some people who would.
I used to be an MS fanboy and believed everything they said....then I saw the light:D
Anything which gets you into the media is good advertising, even when youre being put down.
I agree with you totally. What is MS to do though? Just sit there and ignore it? They would probably be in more strife if they did (although its hard to say).
Its cool how there is viable competition now, the world will be a better place.
That would not be a digital rip. The nice thing about ripping CD's is that you dont lose any quality until you encode into a lossy format (as most people do).
Well, they will first be trained in OOo and mozzy while still running windows. Then a few years down the track comes linux. I would expect that in a few years, linux will be a lot easier to use than it is now. Even now, if you are given a linux desktop box that has already been set up, its easy to use.
Perhaps you could virtually "drive" a few blocks away and see if there are any obsticles in you future path...
Just knowing the way you want to go makes driving easier. The 3Dness would help you to visualise whats coming up.
Although I kind of agree that a 2D map is good enough...but flashy 3D things are nice:)
That alone will increase linux adoption by a lot. Some friends/family dont use linux/mozzy just because some websites wont work...ninems.com.au being one of them;) heh
well, in that case you have to include all the ISV's that write software for windows...as well as all the people who work on linux programs (and there are a lot of those I would imagine).
I dont think its clear cut like that...I dont care, linux is getting better every day:)
Well, the way I see it, we need a protocol that has some kind of double verification that an email came from its real address. Then we need some kind of site where you can flag certain email addresses as spam-senders or even whole domains as "evil":)
These things are a little obvious but would require a lot of work. I think this or something along the lines needs to be done soon. We live in interesting times:)
The idea behind supply/demand is that if you increase the price, its the same as a decrease in supply (kinda like restricting)
Now petrol (oh sorry, GAS) and 4WD's (oh sorry, SUV's) are supplimentry goods. That is, they go together. Make one expensive and people will use less of the other.
I cant explain it all (and I havent done economics for a while, so I may be a little bit off), but when we refer to "supply" of oil, we arent talking about how much of it is in the ground.
Thats a funny one:)
I agree though, mplayer will play anything (including half downloaded files...which is handy)
In my opinion, MPlayer is the best media player thats out there because once you have installed all the codecs, you can throw anything at it and not worry.
That makes total sense. Why wouldnt they?
The easiest way for MS to kill google would be to offer a service thats pretty good.
Then all they have to do is shove it down peoples throat as its bundled/integrated into windows just like with IE.
The only problem with that is: average Jo knows how to click on the address bar and type www.google.com....so perhaps MS could have a pop-up dialog telling the user about how MS has a new super duper search internet feature built in (that no one else has ever thought of...*cough*)
These are interesting times, lets see what happens
Yer, I agree. I have been trying to use OO.org at uni. I put linux on my machine because I like to develop in it.
Anyway, I needed to do some graphing and thought "hmm, oo.o calc....emerge openoffice-bin";) In excel there are a lot of different cool graphs. Like the bubble graph that no1 hardly ever uses! For my purpose, it was exactly what I wanted and wasnt in OO.org. Thats ok, I wrote a sperate Java program to do it for me.
As far as the overall oo.org experiance goes....its pretty good. Its at least as good overall as office 97 and that was good enough 5 years ago:D hehe
I had just sold a computer to a customer many years ago.
:D
I showed him everything it did etc etc....I had been using it for a good 15 mins.
Why dont you have a go?.....so he sits down and just touches the mouse. instant BSOD...I guess some people have no luck
Thats semi-valid. I dual boot my laptop:
;)
In windows, the fan turns on quite a lot (indicating that it gets hotish).
In linux (gentoo), I can do the same activities and the fan will stay off most of the time.
Of course, as soon as I do any CPU intensive stuff in either OS, the fan goes on full. These are only my results though and it could be an anomoly
hmm, if there was a lot of processing power required for this, im sure some of us would lend our CPU cycles seti@home style :)
What if you will be going on a picnic TOMORROW and want to know if it will be raining?
;)
Watch the news

yeah...most people on slashdot wouldnt know what openoffice is!
:)
Sorry to be a troll, just joking

Most of those questions are answered in the article.

That one cracked me up for at least 1 min :)
bsod();....hahahaha
hehe, I knew someone would mention linux ;)
It wont take long to be hacked....just like the xbox ;)
That alone will increase linux adoption by a lot. Some friends/family dont use linux/mozzy just because some websites wont work...ninems.com.au being one of them ;) heh

Go and take an economics lesson ;)

One problem is: who will make this specification? MS? They certainly want to.
Once this new email2 protocol is invented, how long would it take to be implemented around the world by every admin?
What happens when that protocol gets hacked (probably by the spammers)?
I think its the right direction to make an email2 protocol but it wont be easy.
So whats the point of the helix player then?
Thats a funny one :)
