    Yep, thats valid. Regardless on how much OSS there is out there, businesses will still need custom apps written for their specific needs.

    The OSS will provide a good ground for developing this custom software and lower the cost of all businesses...which in turn makes the entire economy run more efficiently. I like that :)

    yeah right. Once the EU gets the cash, it will go into their bank account and be used up in the normal stuff that they spend money on.

    The whole idea is that if you see something enough times you may believe it. So M$ just puts those ads there so your eyes have a glimpse every once and a while.

    I kind of agree with you, but considering you dont pay for slashdot (well, you obviously dont, and neither do I), get used to seeing ads about all sorts of things like this. They need the revenue from somewhere and who cares if its M$. There is by far enough M$ bashing on this site to make up for it :D

    Well, the WTO is supposed to be implementing global free trade without the requirement for silly back scratching techniques.

    It would make the world a better place and everyone knows it, but there are always those selfish people who dont like the idea of free trade.

    Oh well, looks like, as an Aussie, things aren't going to be as good here.

    Have you checked how far Australia is from Asia? No carp will be able to swim its way over there.

    Take the virus that was released to lower the population of rabbits...There hasnt been an aoutbreak in any other country because we dont export rabbits.

    Anyway, swimming in the Murray isnt the best, it used to be clean drinkable water. Now its muddy salty and generally not that nice. Part of the reason is because of the carp and there are other reasons as well.

    We must get rid of the carp one way or another.

    I would say that westeners can not pronounce simple Chinese.

    English is the only language I know but I studied Mandarin chinese for a few years.

    There are all sorts of things in there that we have a lot of trouble pronouncing.

    Im still using 2.4 myself but what I have seen of 2.6 looks very promising.
    Nobody is saying that you have to upgrade to 2.6 NOW. 2.4 will still be there and by the time you need something thats not in 2.4, it should be about time for you to switch to 2.6.
    These people arent even paying anything for the kernel and they are bitching about it!
    I say THANKS to the developers for providing a great piece of software, opensource.

    How many people do you know who make their music collection in WMA?

    Mp3's are mostly used because thats what the average Joe knows about.
    For instance, Mr Joe will say "im gonna download some mp3's" not "im gonna download some music"...

    The technically minded people didnt switch to WMA because its all closed and mean :)

    However, people are using ogg's for their music collection. When I rip CD's, I use ogg now, but I wont be converting the mp3's that I have.

    Haha: Supported by All major Oses (OSX, Linux, BSD and Solaris with the lite version of the media manager software)

    I think they missed the most popular OS there...

    Well, there is that fedora thing... What RH is doing makes sense from a profit perspective. Eh, I dont care that much because I run Gentoo anyway ;) also, linux is getting better and in my opinion it IS ready for the desktop. Especially in a corporate environment.

    I would say that linux in general is growing and so are Red hat & Suse. MS knows there is this threat happening and its good to see some competition :)

    I am Australian, I have lived there for 21 years. I am living in CA at the moment on a student exchange. I drink a lot of beer (more than most Americans) and I did drink a lot of beer back home. I must point out that I have never had a Fosters in my life and the large majority of Australians havent either. Hehe, this is a bit off topic, but im passionate about beer ;)

    I completly agree. This patent is wrong. Stuff like this shouldnt be patentable. Its not MS's fault, they were just doing something natural: View a web page with some stuff in it.

    I am waiting to see how these (as we say in AU:) bullshitters will treat mozilla, opera and all the other web browsers out there. It would be funny if they said that Mozilla could use their "patented technology" for free :) hehe, keep dreaming.

    Its pretty stupid how a judge was convinced that this was legitimate in the first place.

    Personally, I think MS is overall an evil company, but in this case they are right.

    I have always thought vectors were the way to go. The mac implementation is really good (I used mac os X for the first time yesterday). Although having a nicer looking desktop (as long as its optimized) is a good thing. Of course, at first, you wouldnt expect it to go very fast but it should get faster and stable in good time.

    They want a monopoly where they can charge what they want. Everyone knows that :) But, yes, I see your point. And MS arent part of the W3C, so I can see them trying to make the W3C non-standard in IE.

    But even if they are legit copies, who would pay $10 for the next windows media player, or the next directX? M$ have been very silly lately and they are driving customers away.

    I dont second that :) I have had windowsXP Blue screen and stuff up twice on me now. The same thing has been happening to computers at work (I look after a small (40 comps) windows network). The thing is, when winXP stuffs up, you cant even get into safe mode to copy important files. You used to be able to at least get into "Safe mode command prompt only" with win9X. With winXP, safe mode requires a graphical boot... Also, I must point out that on the exact same computer, im running gentoo and havent had any problems at all (accept taking time to compile...but its worth it). So, Microsoft lost another customer.

    I cant see Linux adoption in the desktop market getting up to 25% soon. Note: I myself do run linux as my main OS for everything accept WC3 & other games :) I am hoping that the monopoly does break soon and the general public do understand that there is a choice. I am also realistic about it.

    I agree, different OS's are designed to do different things. Take QNX, you wouldnt run their OS as a pc simply because there isnt that much software written for it. However, its a really useful OS in the field that its specifically designed for.
