Yeah, you're right. I didn't really mean that they were being legit, just that there is a possible logical reason to what they are doing thats not just "We want to keep our monopoly and make it so that it can't be taken away!"
As you could probably tell, I'm like the normal slashdot person and don't like MS's monopolistic actions:)
-They don't want people getting access to the API for free.
-If you got the API and developed some OSS using it then that basically opens the API up to anyone (without them paying for MS's hard API work).
Having said that, I personally think the API's should be free!
That's amazing that you didn't get modded down to -5.
Last time I made an anti-American comment someone told me "You are, quite simply, not welcome here then" and I got modded Redundant. I guess most people don't see it once it goes below 0 so getting to -5 is hard.
I can tell you're not American simply because you can spell centre;)
haha, Melb is one of the coldest cities in Oz. It rains a lot there.
I went to the Melbourne cup (a big horse race where the Australian economy freezes for a few mins) and it pissed down right after a morning of "perfect" weather.
Having said that, I would say that Melb is one of the more trendy cities in Oz, so you should have fun.
I have a mate that works at and he said that they have also been looking at adsl2 and were going to implement it soon. I expect more ISP's to jump on this as well so 1.5mbit ADSL will become like dialup: "you wait overnight for a DVD download...haha"
Its cool how bandwith is going through the roof now:)
Thank you,
That cleared it up. I'm not sure if your ice cream idea works in this case though. Say there is band A and band B. They both make albums and release them at the same time. Lots and lots of people like A but not many people like B. Even if the price of A was double the price of B, more of A will still be bought due to the significanlty higher demand?
With the ice cream, you can switch and it doesn't matter nearly as much as listening to a different band. I would say that ice creams are more substitute goods (had to scratch my head for that word;)) than CD's. Although it is hard to judge how people maximise their utility.
I agree that the "price floor" is the wrong term:)
I have been thinking a bit about the economics of piracy lately. Anyone who knows a bit/lot;) about economics, please comment.
Now, when were talking about digital media, the price to reproduce the good is very close to 0. So we can think of the song/movie/whatever information as being free to reporduce. Now, the RIAA/whoever sets the price of the song/movie to something that is much higher than 0, causing a price floor. If I remember correctly, in my micro-economics class, the teacher said that when you introduce a price floor, black markets emerge. Does this "justify" the online piracy or at least explain in economic terms why it exists?
Of course, I could be confused and have it all wrong:)
They are trying to get devolper interest, not announcing the open card. Its a different story. Although I may have missed the story you are referring to?:)
Not richer...they pay less money remember? Sure, this is only one contract but more companies will do the same thing and M$ lose a lot of their income.
You just came up for an idea google could use to make searching more efficient.
Think about it: Google want to differentiate themselves as the best search (I think they are ATM). This is another way for them to succeed! Filter out copies of Wikipedia/Other copiable sites....
I consider myself to be a bit anti-american. If I have the choice of supporting a homogenous American company vs. something else, I'll take the something else.
Having said that, if you give me free plane tickets to any 1st world country, I would take them:)
Only problem is the internet bandwith requirement. Sure, its fine for a few small files here and there but when you want to copy, say 1GB worth of stuff you will run into some problems.

Why is that funny?
The initial article cracked me up...but the parent post was more like +informative;)
Im pretty sure it was 98SE. The swap over time would have been only about 5-10 seconds and I would have had a gap like that when I was showing him around the comp...oh well:)

Exactly. So MS's thinking is quite legit:
-They don't want people getting access to the API for free.
-If you got the API and developed some OSS using it then that basically opens the API up to anyone (without them paying for MS's hard API work).
Having said that, I personally think the API's should be free!

They don't phrase it exactly like that. They say that "no commonwealth bank employee will ask you for your password" or something like that.
:) hehe
So of course you use your password to log in. If you can't work that one out then you probably shouldn't be using netbank
I know for sure that everytime I log into my netbank, it warns me about "Do not give your password to anyone, even us...blah blah blah"
I think most banks do what you are saying its just that there are so many STUPID people out there who fall for these OBVIOUS (to us at least) scams.
It is very frustrating that people fall for things like this and those dodgy African "lottery" wins that you didn't even enter.

Koala's are not bears ;)
:D
Heh, we need to kill lots of them anyway on Kangaroo Island. No, it's not because the 'roo's don't like them
the new plan will have 1MBit upstream
:)
RTFA...j/k
sorry to reply to myself but the mate worked at an anon isp ;) I put it in "less than, greater than" brackets and slashdot got rid of the "html tag"
I have a mate that works at and he said that they have also been looking at adsl2 and were going to implement it soon. I expect more ISP's to jump on this as well so 1.5mbit ADSL will become like dialup: "you wait overnight for a DVD download...haha"

Not everyone in the world is American :P
Im sure IBM saw it that way when they open sourced it :)
note: im not saying thats a bad thing!
Not richer...they pay less money remember? Sure, this is only one contract but more companies will do the same thing and M$ lose a lot of their income.

This is what competition is about...Sort of
That won't happen as mcuh as you want it to.
He will probably be voted out next election anyway.
BTW, Im not American but I lived there for 6 months while Bush has been in power....The majority of people I met did not like him.
I had a PS2 but sold it to my sister when I went overseas. I think ill get one of these if they dont cost too much :)
