    And what kind of optimzations are we talking about here?
    Better use of the extra registers and better instruction interleaving to prevent pipeline clashes. Just the stuff that the Intel compiler does so well for its own chips to put gcc to shame.

    It is in AMD's best interest to make their own chips fly with gcc.

    On the subject of workstations though... At a train station, trains stop. At a bus stations, buses stop. What does work do at a workstation?

    Pointing a camera at the driver's face and doing image analysis is not a good way of finding out if the driver is falling asleep. It means the driver cannot wear sunglasses and cannot easily move her head to look out the side mirror or do a shoulder check.
    Having a driver respond to a stimulus that could not be responded to if the driver were distracted or dozing is much better.

    Speaking of branding and the Sony name, many of the second tier car radios, Lloyds and Jensen, etc, here in Canada have Sony innards and are repackaged and labeled. I imsagine these companies buy a boatload of Sony devices without cases to sell under their own brand name. There is no indication that there is Sony electronics inside. It just happens.

    Anyone know of a system to spit an audio stream out over multiple sound cards and keep it synched?

    How about remote speakers with a long cable or cordless headphones. Sometimes an analog solution can be cheaper and either one will sound better than laptop speakers.

    Support for this eye-candy was added in XP and it has been provided by the nvidia driver since 2002. I don't know about ATI cards.

    Hi,

    I didn't realize the dvd code is closed and only the cd portion is open. Expiring licences are used to force people to upgrade--a good idea if you have lots of bugs and a bad idea if you decide to start charging money for your product.

    Well i always do my burning on an alphaserver, on which cdrecord-prodvd won't run.. Not because it couldn't compile, cdrecord compiles perfectly on it, but simply because the author doesnt see fit to produce a binary for my platform.

    Why don't you offer to produce the alpha binary for him?

    Granted, this is the guy who is proud of writing 40k LOC of useless code that we replaced with a 100 line perl module and doesn't even work because he never finished a working build system for it. I guess that explains a lot.

    Your manager should be slapped for allowing him to run wild for so long without supervision. Now, everybody's time has been wasted.

    No! I don't think Intel invested much into the services area -- where most of the amazing failures were. They seem to invest in companies that build on their own technologies. See for details.
