Well, the one he linked to costs $350.99 (At the cheapest retailer), and assuming a $50 case and a $50 PSU, it's $100 cheaper, premade, and doesn't need to be put together from scratch. Though, I guess if $1/GB is a good price, it kind of comes out even. Plus the Buffalo unit draws 21W.

I am not an electrical engineer (Or whatever else would be needed to fully understand it) but I've heard that placing those kinds of cleaners next to computers can cause problems and potentially damage the computer. Of course, that was on Slashdot, so I'm sure someone will be kind enough to tell why or why not.

I only wish I had the metal working skills to create a case for one, though I'd have to steal^Wfind a tape player from a car first.

On the other hand, I turned an old CDROM drive (One of those "IDE" on Soundcard things) into a draw. It's got a nice handle on it that really matches the look of the computer, though needs special short screws, since longer ones pinch the draw in and prevent you from opening it. Which may be a security feature to some...

I've never had an incoming speed greater than 400KB/s except on very rare occasions. The modem says it's capped at 11Mbps (I forget the IP number to look at it, but it's probably limited elsewhere, too), but I figure it's either the firewall or my router that's slowing down traffic. Either that or the lines out here are of poorer quality than I thought.

I've never had to use tech support, and I don't use their email servers so I can't comment on those. The port 80 block is rather annoying, though.

I just recently discovered they had newsgroups, but I haven't tried many groups.

I never knew about the upload caps, but I bet I've experienced it. That really stinks, and combined with the port 80 block, I'm thinking about switching.

What I plan to have when I get my own network:
    1: Desktop
    1: Server

I figure those three are about all I need. The server would really be backup, webserving, file serving, and various other server-like tasks (Perhaps a game server from time to time). Not really geeky, but you don't need much more than that.

If you really don't want to get rid of excess computers, I'd suggest getting a rack or cabinet of some kind, tossing them in, and have one large BOINC system.

Milkshape3D is the biggest thing I'd want. Quake Video Maker? Not really necessary, but it's good to have. Q3map2Build would be nice, but that'd probably work in WINE as is.

Comctrl.exe would be a major plus, as well as it working with XMMS. (It's a Winamp plugin that lets you control WA via the serial port with 15 buttons that have click/double click control for a total of 30 functions.)
