Well because it's free, there's always a long waiting for operations. In the US, you can shell out the cash and get it done right away. That's the only reason. Well that, and doctors get paid less here, so all the REALLY good ones skip the country and sell out, so if you want someone super specialized, you might want to go to the US and pay.

Earlier today I posted about how glad I am that I don't live in a twisted country like the US, because of a wonderful law that's being discussed. Here's a quick little tidbit.

File sharing would be punishable by prison sentences of up to ten years in addition to large fines. Another bill introduced by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) - Called the "Pirate Act" - would empower the Justice Department to initiate lawsuits against file sharers. According to the both the entertainment industry and Sen. Hatch, P2P networks are virtual dens of thieves, with the most pernicious of un-American activities occurring in an attempt to lure young Internet users into a lifetime of lawbreaking. In defending the Pirate Act, Hatch said the operators of P2P networks are running a conspiracy in which they lure children and young people with free music, movies and pornography. With these "human shields," the P2P companies are trying to blackmail the entertainment industries into accepting their networks as a distribution channel and source of revenue. "Unfortunately, piracy and pornography could then become the cornerstones of a 'business model,'" Hatch said in a statement. The illicit activities of file sharers "then generate huge advertising revenues for the architects of piracy."

And Then I got flamed because in Canada we pay excise tax on CDs (and soon to be other recording media) because they can potentially be used for pirating copyrighted works. I totally agree with that law. The money goes to the recording industry (I think) and everyone is fairly content with the deal. (besides, it's only a few bucks and it seems fair enough to me. Yeah, i know, majority of the people use the CDs for legit purposes, blah blah blah).

I am also 1.88 m tall. I do not fit well in one of those little tin can cars that the world thinks I should use.

That's rather strange, since I'm 190cm tall and I owned a Metro, which was plenty big enough for me. In fact, a '95+ Metro/Swift (now Aveo/Swift) has more legroom in the front and back than a '94 Cavalier. These cars look tiny from the outside, but there's some rather impressive engineering at work to gain a lot of space.

I don't here too much about EU types having to travel say 3,000 km in 3 day with a wife 2 kids and luggage on board. I also don't hear about you buying plywood and lumber for building onto your property very often.

I have lived in Europe (Eastern Europe to be exact) and people do haul stuff around like you wouldn't believe! I've seen everything from bricks to cow shit (for fertelizer) moved in the trunk (which was often times in the front on many rear engined models) I've taken vacations spanning thousands of kilometers with a family of four. I've seen my grandfather hauling a trailer of fruits and veggies to the market with his 1968, 49HP Skoda 1000MB. Not to mention that the roads in Eastern Europe at this time were way worse than anything here, yet the little cars got the job done. It's all American perception that you need an SUV to go over a speed bump.

I didn't realize that you could write interest payments on your mortgage off your taxes. I only live 2 hours from the nearest border. :)

You can only have a set rate for 5 years maximum. That's what refinancing is all about. And with landlords, they can only increase your payments by a certain small percentage per year, which depends on the state/country you live in, and being Canadian, it is a very low percentage

  22. Re:Pay off debt or buy a house on A Wireless Network for a 4-Story Apt. Building? · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is off topic, but more insightful than most of the comments here. Mortgage is a good idea only when your rent is really high, or more specifically, if your rent is more than The interest payment portion of your mortgage. For Example: You mortgage a $200,000 house for 25 years, assuming about 5% interest, your payments for the first five years are $1185 a month. In the first five years you've paid 60*1185 = $71,145, but oh so sad for you, $54,343 of that was in interest. Now then, say your rent is $500 a month (say you live with a room mate) and (this is the key) you put away the difference that you'd pay for the monthly mortgage, ($1185 - 500 = $685). Now do that for five years while renting, and you've saved $41,100 towards your house. So mortgage is NOT always the best way to go.

Nooooo, what the hell are you thinking. Think of this as the one piece of advice from a stranger that will save your life. You want to do marketing. I'm almost done my undergrad in TWO degrees. One is a BSc in Computer Electronics and one is a Business Admin Degree. Guess which degree is completely UESELESS?
Marketing is where its at for several reasons anyways. Marketing classes have more (and hot) girls in them. Business/Marketing requires about 15-20 hours of class and a little bit of homework, Computer crap requires days and days of hard work and hairloss. University is the best part of your life. THe last thing you want to do is work. With marketing, you can get a good job. Entry level jobs at GM (where i've worked as an intern) for marketing are over $60K CDN. And you start getting raises after the first year.

For a better demostration. Computer hardware is like "Write a program to calculate the checksum of a series of 8-bit numbers. The checksum is formed by doing an exclusive OR of all the numbers in the list. For example, if the series had three numbers: $28, $55, and $26, the checksum would be formed by $28 XOR $55 XOR $26. The checksum for the example would be $5B. Assume the length of the list is provided" and marketing is like "Explain the importance of information to the company." Your choice big guy. Make the right one.
-By the way, the two quotes were both taken from actual course class material.

Theres a few other sounds I've heard in many places before. When you kill a trooper in Dune2 (no not DOOM II) they sometimes make the same noise that you hear in "Freejack" the movie when they drive on the sidewalk and a guy jumps out of the way. I've heard it in other movies, always used with people jumping out of the way. There is one more REALLY famous noise, that's the noise used in all the Doom games - when you open a door, i've heard that noise in a ton of movies and tv shows.
