now let me say something that tends to get lost in all this anti-microsoft bashing: the average microsoft programmer probably has a higher IQ than the average joe-shmoe who likes to write "M$" and "microshit". even less obvious (or blindly ignored) is the fact that a lot of if not most microsoft people are actually linux geeks! microsoft runs a bunch of linux servers. go figure...

More realistically, the PSP will probably be priced $200-400 at launch if most specs make it into the final production unit. In that case, don't even think about the beginning demise of the GBA -- the PSP and GBA won't even be in the same market.

Don't hold your breath, but do start to save money because the future will be pretty damn exciting for portable gaming.

  12. hmm.... on Study: Wi-Fi users Still Don't Encrypt · · Score: 2, Insightful

why is it that i am not surprised at this stat? the problem with the current state of wi-fi is that it is generally insecure by default. if you want to increase security you have to fudge around with cryptic configuration settings, and if you don't know what you're doing you can make your network even less secure or fubar the whole thing. the mass market consumer -- and this would be the target audience if wi-fi were to really take off -- should not be expected to know what vpn stands for or what a tunnel is besides the big holes that trains and vehicles go through.

in an ideal world secure protocols would be built in and invisible to the user. out of the box all security measures would be enabled by default, so if you want to turn off encryption you'd have to turn it off manually. the dream of ubiquitous computing would be a nightmare without ubiquitous security.

    • it's the smallest and lightest hdd player/recorder on the market
    • its software is feature-packed (includes basic PIM and games), intuitive, and upgradeable (OV is not out of the question)
    • it's got both usb2 and firewire
    • it's got award-winning industrial design
    • it comes with a recharging docking station
    • standards-based synching that actually works as expected
    • other subtle details here and there that i can't think of right now -- details that only perfectionist apple would pay attention to
the only pc equivalent is, what else, the ipod for windows coming out by the end of the year (i hope) :). other than that, the closest hdd audio device that has a chance of challenging the ipod is the philips player that is somewhere in late beta stage.
