There will be a Titan
flyby on Tuesday Oct, 26. Huygens will be released, and the first
good images of Titan will start coming in Tuesday evening. Nasa will
have special coverage. You can join #cassini on irc.freenode.net and
join in the discussion. Tommorrow promises to be great fun. We invite
everyone to join in on irc and party like its 1999.
I thought Rutans remarks were inapproriate at best. Nasa does good solid research and its no doubt that SSl and White KNight benifited from that research.
In my experiance boasting is a sure fire way to set oneself up for a big fall. I hope that it doesnt happen but the karma of the whole SS1 program has to be revised downwards in my estimation.
Anyone that tries to stay informed can see that yes SS1 is neat, and it did accomplish something. But, the real revolution is coming with Scramjet Engine technology that NASA is developing. Burt didnt use scramjets because he lacks the research . Nasa is about to launch the X-43A later this fall and it will hit Mach 10. Im sorry but the sell out of SS1, combined with the lack of appreciation for government sponsered space flight on Rutans part just pisses me off, and makes me sick. Thats sad, because it didnt have to gbe this way.
This reminds me of the 2000 debates, when Gore was supposedly a great debater and Bush was expected to do terrible. He actually did okay in debating Gore, and since the expectations of Bush were so low, he 'won".
If the Kerry campaign is smart they will find a way to lower the expectations about his performance in the debates.
Maybe this is the tactic they are applying ala Kerrys comments on the Dialy Show, etc...
Either way, with 25% +/- of the voting public keenly interested in the debates, and a 5 point race, both have some serious work cut out for them.
Most likely the debates will be nothing more than an extension of the current trend of campaigns: Smoke and Mirrors.
The real substance, fire, and destruction is in Iraq. One day we might hear the real story of why we fight/die for oil. We could let the Middle East eat sand if we implemented tighter fuel efficiency laws etc.. but I digress. As does this election.
Two polls (Harris Interactive, and Pew) show the race being even. The outlier is Gallup which has Bush ahead.
So lets do some quick and easy math.
Kerry 46% Bush 46 % (Pew)
Kerry 48% Bush 47% (Harris Interactive)
Kerry 41% Bush 52% (Gallup)
Now lets average both candidates and reach some middle ground:
Kerry 45 Bush 48.3
(The margin of error is +/- 3 or 4 points)
Is this accurate? No. But its something to think about.
I have often dreamed of a cable router that is capable of using two phone lines in with dsl service. Lets say 2 lines at 3.0 Mbps downstream doubled to 6.0 (!) and 312 upstream side. The cable modem would have to be smart enough to manage and combine the two lines as one line. But man, talk about nice and fast! I am sure its most likely not a complete solution, but its just a dream of mine. It would be cheaper than anything else i can think of for those of us who need bandwidth on a budget. And that most likely applies to all of us.
Will this suffice as 'proof of concept"

For those of you that prefer irc, we set up #space_politcs on irc.freenode.net to keep the politics out of channels where it isn't appropriate, and to provide a place where interested parties can discuss. Hope to see you all here and there.

Sadly, I see the same same type of international jockying over the site selection for this project as I do when I watch the UN in action. International cooperation sounds good, but seldom is very efficient. Just look at the International Space Station for another example. In my mind, this project has unlimited potential. However, it will most likely never be realized do to such squabbling.
*Yawn.
How long has this project been around now, 3 years? I don't see very much cooperation, and it doesnt look good if they havent been able to even agree on a site placement. I believe that any international cooperation should be tempered by a large dose of realism. Sad but true.....
Peace, Dusty
Who defines what is malicious? Is it outwrite malicous activity (READ intrusion and destruction), or code that is identified and peer reviewed as malicious? I just want to know who is deciding what can go on my box and why. Will mp3's be one day named malicious because the code may or may not infringe on patents? Or is this truly a stop-gap measure to prevent getting rooted? What about patent infringements? Im sure some quarters would say that is malicious indeed. Just a question after my beers.

Laura Didio: aka the SCO queen and her take on this development!!
"Up until now it was more like the 70/30 rule, where 70 percent of the threats are bogus. Now it's more like 50/50," Didio said. "With the open source community, there are a large percentage of tinkers and 'ankle biters' who are trying their hand at hacking. Some are even communicating with each other. So it only takes one or two of these groups sharing information to be able to pull something off. When you have this type of passion, it's hard to fight because these people are like virtual suicide car bombers."
You would think by now people would learn. There are just some things one should never do.
1.) Never get involved in an Asian Land War.
2.) Never *assume the Acid is legit, without
knowing who made it.
3.) Never, ever believe that Republicans or Dems
are very different in philosophy or levels of
corruption.
4.) Never ever fuck with Big Blue, unless you like
the feeling of your anus getting
stretched.
5.) Never bite the hand that feeds you unless you
want to have your teeth kicked in.
This is just some advice Darl. I hope what life you will have before you after you get out of federal prison is enjoyable. See ya in 20!
Howard Dean may have been the internet candidate. But i doubt it. Unfortunately, his campaign is parralleling the dot com bust of the late 90's. The internet is a great way for candidates to construct platforms, and for voters to learn of candidates. It just so happens Dean turned out to to have a self destructive, insane quality that turned folks off. Dean is toast. I just wish he would get out the race, because I feel pity for his futility.
Dean is now looks like he has an alein in his head and the alien has decided to binge on cheap wine, and LSD. He is out of touch with reality. Well at the least the architect of his campaign jumped of this ship before it went down.
Faster, Better, Cheaper? Pick two and toss out one. We all know that low cost and space are desirable, the only problem is that low cost and government aint gonna happen. By its nature government views the spending as a positive. Hell, government will spend the saving on something else. Its all pointless. I say spend more for less is probably the best solution:)
Okay as I sit here and contemplate the effects of this development an urge to tell you all about my experience with the penguin develops.
At first it was innocent enough. I had heard the rumors and decided to try out Linux. This was during the heady, economically rewarding period of the mid 1990's. I has heard all the rumors. You know like "you invite the penguins over and they never leave." That kind of thing, but I thought I knew it all. I thought I was a big shot. With smug self-assuredness I turned the penguins loose. I set them free. My mighty Celeron screamed in anticipation of processor cycle efficiency and its dreams of speed increases were not denied. I became one with the Penguista and was instantly and effectively addicted. I tried to statisfy my addiction with new kernels. Upgrades. New flavours. Soon work suffered as did my sex life. Like an adle-brained heroine junkie my minds pleasure receptors were spoiled by the taste of the true good stuff. No longer satisfied by binaries and closed source I became a slave of the very thing that set me free. Lately insolent, addicited and enslaved, I realize that I am a shell of the man I once was. I have lost my freedom. The Penguista have commandeered my fate. Darl. Simply so you will understand. I want my soul back. I want my freedom back Darl. Darl, the Unix doesnt like you and the Penguista frankly think you are undeserving their respect. I need help Darl. I need help now Darl. Darl, for once do some good and plead with Penguista for mercy. They can offer judicialjurisprudence in certain situations as I am sure you know. But i will say one thing Mr. McBride, if you win and get your billions I am gonna sue you for the damages Linux has casued me!

We have two choices in the near future.
1.) Escalate.
2.) Pull out.
Either way we lose. Thanks Mr. Bush for giving us two great choices.

Sold. Seriously, that looks really nice, Thanks!

This is one nice thing they have going. If its developed correctly it could really turn a lot of people on to Linux. I am all for that!~
