Its nice to see that some bands are starting to make their stuff available online to those that appreciate music, and understand its inherent desire to be free.
I've been going on about getting folks to open their stuff up for quite a while here.. You can read my posts to find out all that ive been saying on this issue.
Is it selfless promoting for folks to make the news with this stuff? Most likely.
It most likely isn't new or novel as has been said in the comments above. Just consider how many folks write and make music and know of this little thing we lovingly call the internet.
Now.. what will be interesting will be to see if thier stuff *remains* in the public realm vis a vis CC licensing or non enforcement of copyright.
They can most likely still make some money on this by selling cd's just out of the good will they garner.p.
As for me, since ive been preaching on this now for what seems like an eternity.. Im gonna keep doing my thing, and wish these guys well!
Peace Yall,
D
This stinks for a number of reasons but here are few.
First of all the music industry is consipiring to strangle the very human instinct of music. It is in us, and we are genetically programmed to appreciate it.
The reason this industry is fighting so hard is greed. Pure and simple greed.
They have a way of life/business model that can't addapt to the quickly changing digital world around them so like vultures they are clawing at their food supply.. namely your dollars.
So whats to do? Namely the copyright holders of each song/piece of music ulitmately control if it is placed in the public domain. Currently most are being greedy.. or are just clueless.
Its pyrimid ponzi scheme of artistic and corporate collusion, and its only getting worse.
They are the music nazis, and if you want it you must join their party and play their game.
We need to continue to encourage folks to step up to the plate. Bands, artists, songwriters of all flavors should make thier stuff availible online with one CC stipulation.. It can't be sold/profitted from unless the copyright holder changes the license.
Most of the stuff from the big labels is corporate shit anyway.. the only reason folks buy it is they are told its cool.
So those of who do make music cause you frelling love it, and not because you want a damn easy check fight on.
Live it, love it, make it real.
Even if you suck its better than canned spam coming out yer radio.
Its the very heart of human consiousness, emotion, creativity, and shared ownership of all the things that define humanity.
Its not socialism, its humaniticism.
Its not communism, its idealism.
Idealism in human nature, and the desire for all of us stand on the shoulders of giants.
Possesion is 9/10ths ownership, if you have it, you own it...... In our case, and the case the author is making.. Humanity owns creative works..because humans made them.
They all all ours, and should be shared. It enriches us as sentient beings. It makes us wiser, and more appreciative of life.
And its is in human nature to improve upon things, even though the media would have you think all we do as a species is tear things down!
Some of us are poor and impoverished, but just love making music.
When im not in front of a monitor, or spending time with my kids/wife unit.. guess where I am..? IN my studio making/playing/writting practicing.. whatever
In the end for me its not about getting rich..lol
Its about getting better..having fun.. and giving back.
Personally Im not a big fan of remixes, or covers for that matter. But...
Everything under the sun is one big remix on some level.
We need to top piracy, but we should also encourage authors/songwriters/performers/composers, to do what the BBC did the other day.. Namely release a copyrighted work for personal use..
Sure there were strings attached but when isn' there?
I really don't understand why these companies think thier stuff is the only media to be had. They think they have us over a barrel, and currently they do..
As a community we should shun copyright infgringement, but at the same time we should encourage the copyright holders to release their material for personal use..
Thats how I do my stuff.. My songs are copyrighted, or CC, but they have "no profit" without permission clause.. You are free to have them as long as you don't sell them.. Its really really simple.
Since I started posting my little songs up on the net I have contacted by BMI.. I am going to join, but only because they can help me if an artist took something i have written and recorded it/ changed it. etc and proffited without compensation or permision from me..
I need the EFF to ensure that I have the right to make my stuff available. They fight the good fight for us honest little people.
The world is big place. Why should we be forced to eat the vanilla the big networks force on us , when a lot of us prefer ?
If the demand is there, then sell the boxed set. And yes i do belive that leaking is a very savy way of building interest. Its just my experiance with my own hobby here (read my url). I have a couple hundred dollars in recording.. and couple thousand in equipment, and am not niave enough to think that fame and fortune are in my future.
Soon enough big networks will die if they don't change. And soon enough some real talent will come up on the music side, that can handle the new digital age.... embrace it... and do like the Dead did with their bootlegs... it builds a community.
All the big boys are trying to demonize p2p because of copyright infringements... Its just useless. They cry foul because their business model doesn't fit.... boohoo.
Maybe a smart advertising company could sponsor some Creative Commons shows and release them. And then merchandise it..
// Just an idea//
The best internet radio is the free kind. Somewhere along the way we lost the true value of art. It supposed to be shared even if you suck. Go ahead and share it! Myabe you can influence someone somewhere. Period. The best music will most likely never happen due to greed. We all have to eat.
Best heard under Heavy surround sound because it hasn't been mixed yet.lol
However I live by words, and YES i do suck. But here is my take. And its free for you. You need surround sound and good stereo to appreciate it, but i give it to you. That way its still mine.:P
And yes I wrote this and performed all the instruments. So its mine to give.
Actually I was trying to imply that I though the story was true, and then end it by saying that I would sell my son, for a new g5.
Yes I knew it was a joke, but I guess my sarcasto-meter was running low. If I have to expain the post, then It probably means I failed at it, BUt it was supposed to be funny. Like "Im looking at my son to see how much he is worth".
Anyway, coffee will get my synapses greased up, and by 10:00 I might be able to conjure up something worthwhile.
Peace,
D
So this guys wants to sell his child for 30,000 dollars, while I have a friend that sold a kidney and now is in jail. Isn't that funny? I have in idea for him though. Step up and be a parent, and love his child. The gadgets will come. Maybe he could get a job. There is no job like a being a real parent.
Novel idea that. I love my children, and shudder at the greed involved here.
I am thinking though... A new mac could be nice..........
/Me looks plaintively over at his son eating breakfast....
Big claims require big evidence. I surely hope that the price can be set at at the 5 cents/kwh, but something nagging in the back of my mind says not yet.
However if it is indeed true, it should not be a huge surprise. The cost of solar has been falling in recent years.
I did speak to a solar firm about putting in enough to run my house ( 69 kwh/month ) the cost to install was going to be around 75,000 dollars, and in my area electricity is still to cheap to justify the cost.
However if I can install at this super low 5 cents/kwh, I just might bite the bullet. That is roughly 2 cents/kwh cheaper than my utility sells juice for!
In other words the sae was frozen and had a lot sediments in it. As the surface evaporated the sediments were left on top. The sediments in conjunction with vlocanic ash effectively inusulates the sea underneath it.
Its kinda like an aquifer, except that in this case the aquifer is frozen!
I love Fedora. Always have. And no, I am not some noob user. I've been running linux for a long time. I have an amazing destop environment thanks to yum and the livna repositories and as well as FreshRPM's, Dag and others.
I really appreciate the effort that a lot of folks put into Fedora. In fact, I think I started testing it out around FC1 test1. Everything works great here.. on multiple boxes. And if I need help..since I live on freenode, I can ask in #fedora...generally nice folks.
Look all flames aside. I've been using Linux for my workstations, home, etc, for 6 years, and Fedora has never let me down.
Mod this how you see fit. Peace
H2/societal integration CAN happen. All it takes is an administration that wants it to.
For all the poo-poo I am reading about cracking Natural Gas to create hydrogen and thus pollute may I mention the said process is done so the C02 can be treated as a point-source pollution vs. a non-point source pollutant (ie internal combustion engines). That allows for the sequestration of Carbon people!
Also, since the cracking of natural gas is done at a central site, the C02 can be sequestered instead of released into the atmophere.
Electrolysis can be accomplished on a regional scale. All we need are some nifty pebble bed reactors, to provide us with safe energy for the electrolysis.
People wake up, the future is coming like a frieght train. America needs to learn to dream again.

Long the the EFF!
I think matter is ON crack...\
The true owners of the copyright, have the right to give their material away..
Its not the content they are afraid of losing. Its the premium they charge.
Hopefully a lot of people will copyright their onstuff and then give it away.
What better way to say fuck you? (Mod down.. way down.. its the truth)
But this is indeed big news.. and is probably worth repeating.. D

China: we like money....
Microsoft: pay me....
China: we can get it for free...
Microsoft: WE can ensure your communist rule by limiting freedom.
China: wha? freedom? There is no freedom... only work!
Microsoft: Let us show you the way..
China: Deal!

Actually we handle asbestos on Earth quite well, I rather doubt the dust on the moon will be an issue. Its really low on the scale of things to do.
The funding might be the biggest obstacle to ever living on the moon, although I hear Scaled has a 5 year plan. hehe
