Where would FPS games be on consoles if not for Goldeneye on the N64? Show a little love now.
And Chessmaster? What about Navy Seals: SOCOM, or Tony Hawk? That's not even talking about sports games. It's either Madden or EA's NCAA game that my little brother plays nonstop. Not that it would ever stop ME from whoopin' his ass.
And I may be alone here, but I really don't think that controls are much of a problem for most games. Maybe if you're talking that Tom Clancy games where you need two keyboards and a Mad Catz steering wheel/pedal combo to map all your keys... But tell me you can't do Warcraft on a controller. Psht.
And like someone else said on here. What about older games? Do they require less memory to be thrown across connections? Because I'm on cable and I can ZSNES the hell out of some MK/Street Fighter. Remember the Mortal Kombat Gold/Trilogy game? Where they had all the characters in the final 2d version of the game? Toss that out as a value buy at $15, give it online play. (Even if MK2 was best of the series, and still far below SSF2T.)
I might be wrong, but don't the record companies recoup their money spent on the artist before the artist even sees a dime of it? Some times with interest? If that is the case please don't act like the record companies are helping out the artsits. And helping a few of the 'current hot' cliche is only helping those few. Look at all the other artists that aren't getting any promotion.
They say that 8 of 10 artists lose money, 1 breaks even, and 1 makes the money to support the rest. So by that assumption you'd think that at least 2 of 10 (1 of 5) artists get some decent promotion. How many bands/artists are signed by the RIAA? A thousand, maybe just hundreds, I'd think? But it's laughable to think that 1 out of 5 artists gets decent promotion.
Actually, thinking about it, what does one consider promotion? Magazine ads? Posters? Commercials? Signings? That's it, right? Surely they can't legally call payola-ed airtime "promotion", can they? Do they just count up the value of the tickets/swag they give away?
Do any of you really do your choice video game shopping at Wal-Mart? If you do, and refuse to shop elsewhere, you deserve to get screwed.
And for all the whining about selling access to mods? So what? It's nothing new for a company to sell add-ons to released games. You don't complain about that, do you? Look at Morrowind, they've got two addons! They're trying to screw the customer! *gasp*... No. See, it doesn't work like that.
All the complaining I'm seeing here is that official mods, which they pay to have produced, are being charged for. Everyone does that. All this means is that the door is open for a new team to come out of nowhere and blow the doors off of Counter-Strike with their own free mod. Seriously, what's with this obscene devotion to the brands that makes people say "Oh no, it's just not right!"?
I mean, I'm an anarchist and socialist. I think it should all be free. But given the system and how it works, this is absolutely nothing new at all. Old hat, even.
Seriously. I mean, I see folks complaining about BitTorrent links not working. How about some old fashioned Peer2Peer answers? And seeing as Kazaa is kinda unreliable, how about eMule links?
I mean, it's open source, it only takes one person to 'verify' the links. (The poster, in a Slashdot posting case.) No servers to bother with. I mean, c'mon. It just makes sense.
Quoted from the above article:
The IP prosecutors in the Section are responsible for establishing and enforcing the Department's overall intellectual property rights enforcement program, including the prosecution of federal intellectual property crimes.
By 'establishing... the... enforcement program', what exactly do you mean? And how can the 7million plus filesharers let their voices be heard in this debate? Should we go about electing a board of our own spokesmen and eventually politicians to help change these laws, or are there other ways?
*end question, begin rant*
It would seem to me that this kind of support for music on the internet shows that people are not happy with the current solutions. Rather than stick with what, we feel, is an outdated model, we feel that content should be free, and that paying artists is our choice. (And something we should do, if we want them to keep making music.)
So far as I interpret law, the government's job is not to protect IP so much as it is to serve the public. If the people demand that IP laws be abolished, they will be abolished. No, this isn't likely at all, but merely an extreme example to point out it's technically possible.
Simple. Just institute classes of racers/vehicles. Those withing 'normal' bounds and those above. Surely it's not hard to check a few key numbers and report whether they fall into Class A or Class B.
I'm just pissed that they haven't instituted a unified memory card system yet.
And for that matter, why don't arcades offer fighting games where people can import their own fighters fully made from, say, a small program freely available on the Net. And with a single memory card they could import the character to any console version of said game....
If Popeye had the POW block I don't remember, but I won't argue it. But don't forget that Super Mario 2 also had the POW block that came out of the ground when you pulled turnip stalks..... I just realized just HOW high those guys must've been. I mean, I know it was a sprite-swap job, but still. Wild vegetables that turn into 'magic potions' and make you see the world in a different way? Riiight. Tell me they weren't on something.
Normally I'd say "Good plan.", but why not put it out for GBA and GCN? For the portables AND the home crowd. Casual gamers would be more likely to buy their home system (which floundered this time, compared to their past ones) if they was a quality line of games for $29. Which, compared to most games, is a throw-away price. Barely more than a CD or DVD.
And it'd give newer gamers a chance to catch up on what they've been missing. It's an idea, anyway. Like those nifty Atari controllers that have games. That's just sweet.
I'm sure there's some porting involved in things like this, but you have to wonder why Nintendo doesn't do a "Mario Anthology" containing the 'Mario Allstars' and 'Mario 64' on the same disc for the Game Cube. They could do the same with Zelda or Metroid games. Put them out for $20 or so. Chaaaaa-ching.
I'm not going to knock any degree program from anywhere. Lord knows, if I had went somewhere else my wallet wouldn't hurt like it does now. And yeah, placement rates should definitely be taken with a grain of salt. Perhaps even a table spoon of it.
But as the last guy pointed out, the teachers here know their business. And after talking to a few past students before I came here, the ones who didn't "make" it usually complain that they weren't prepared. The ones who did make it? They said they just studied their asses off and put real work into it. So as to where if it would be "better" to go to another school? That's neither here nor there. I'm sure a lot of people in the biz never went to school. It's all about what methods better help you to learn.
I looked a DigiPen and Full Sail and thought, "Either two years of working my ass off, and be a competitive hire to anyone else who's done the same by that time, or a year-plus of really working my ass off, being a competitive hire, and hopefully having a title under my belt by the end of that second year.".
Thank you, "Anonymous Coward", as a student of Full Sail I just wanted to let you know that your post has changed me. To say that everyone you've met is a pretentious fuckoff? Ouch. I now see the err of my ways. I was obviously rude to the locals who, like you, are only kind and noble people.
... But seriously. Do you honestly think that about us? I've got to ask, what has given you that impression? I see this whole list of responses saying how Full Sail is nothing but a waste of cash. If that's true, I'll find out in about a year. But to go so far as to accuse the students at Full Sail of having "Big Dreams(tm)"? That's a weighty accusation. How dare we want to have fun and make movies and games out of our hopes and dreams? (I'm with you on those audio fucks tho'. Those bastards!)
Do we (Game Design students) put too much weight into the name "Full Sail"? HA! Things said in this post don't hold a candle to the evil things we say about this school. We all know this place is a cookie cutter. (As someone else so succinctly put it.) But FS never sold me any false hopes. I know my odds are crummy. But here I can learn the 'basics'. I can meet others with similar interests. I just think it's amazing that so many posters trash FS for not handing you a job with your diploma. It's just like any other school. You only get out what you're willing to put in. Just because they've got this whole "stylish" BS going for them people get mad when they're not guaranteed jobs. Sheesh.
Can't wait to see both of these games. Though you have to lower expectations as most licensed properties in video games and in comics suck. (One of many things games and comics have in common.)
I second the notion of Jim Mahfood (40ozComics.com) getting a game, and as good as Grrl Scouts would be, I'd prefer a Zombie Kid game. With the toon-shading done in games today, it'd actually look worthwhile. Or how about a game based on 8 bit theater? (nuklearpower.com) C'mon Square-Enix! (Wouldn't that be ironic?) Hire this guy and let'im make a game!
But I vote against Transmetropolitan as a game. I'm tired of surly English people and the Americans who 'want to be like them when they grow up'. That's so 1990s.
-Jef.
I know BitTorrent seems to be the 'hipper' p2p right now, as it's the smaller one... But is it possible that people could toss up a few eDonkey (eMule) links with their stories?
Jeffool.
What about schools like DigiPen or Full Sail? Yeah, there are others, but these are the ones you see compared everywhere. Any horror/success stories about people graduation from these schools?
