One suggestion, take a page from MS and pick up the C# language spec and build it into a multi platform engine using OSS.... Embrace and extend.... Just watch out for patents.
Actually in an earlier article they give the reason:
here
London, UK - 19 February 2004, 13:30 GMT - mi2g Intelligence Unit data shows that partially as a result of the growth of the MyDoom family of malware, lingering effects of Mimail, Dumaru, Sobig, Swen, Klez, Sober, Yaha, BugBear and Fizzer, and also as a result of new strains of Bagle, February 2004 has already become the worst month for malware proliferation on record with 10 days to go. As of today, the total economic damage from all malware epidemics in February is estimated to lie between $43.8bn and $53.6bn worldwide, two thirds more than the record breaking previous month of January.
Basically no Windows boxes were active during the month and all outages; overt, covert, automatic, or otherwise were just reported as malware and thus dropped from the study. Only the fact that Linux, BSD and MACOs are immune from these attacks kept them alive to be hacked. So crackers had to concentrate on them.
>>>>Do they really believe that licensing software developers will lead to more secure software?
You have missed the point, nobody on the committee cares about improving security. The worse it is the more money they make. Only MS (and perhaps a few other huge contributors) will be able to generate certified software engineers so only MS software will be useable. Thus LINUX will either die from lack of use or die from being commercialized by MS. There will be two benificiaries, MS by making money and selected congresspeople who will get brib^h^h^h^h campaign contributions. Meanwhile NSA software will be generated in China, rather than by US programmers.
If there were any interest in having secure software the committee recommendation would be to ONLY allow open software.
Red hat has filed for a permanent injunction. Just as soon as they get onto the docket the jig is up. In the meantime, hang in there and enjoy the ride.
SCO did threaten to take any corporation using LINUX to court to get payment for using "their" "intellectual IP". That is the threat of legal action that Red hat is attempting to halt. Red Hat is, last I heard, a corporation using LINUX if there is one anywhere on this planet. Looks like it's put up or shut up time for Darl &co.
Of course the tablet PC was just a copy of the Newton and the Palm Piot and so on. So let's not get to calling names. Nothing has ever been done for the first time. Everything new is always built on its predecessors. Meanwhile, BRAVO, great response to the open letter.

I agree, cannot get Mandrake to function properly. Won't support mozilla or Java. Runs blazingly slow, did they ship it with a built in virus?
Perhaps DC should move to have the case dismissed with extreme prejudice. Does Utah still have the death penalty?
