ADC isn't Apple's invention nor is it proprietairy. It's an IBM sposored VESA standard. It's called a Plug and Display Port and was introduced in 1997, well ahead of Apple's use of ADC connectors. And.. it's a damn shame that Apple is the only adopter of this great technology. But is's so symptomatic of the whole PC world: They just don't get it!

Gee, thanks for doing this after delaying my order for 6 weeks back when the G5s were originally supposed to be shipping to the rest of us.
Six weeks? VT neeeded 1100 machines. Apple shipped 220 000 G5s the first quarter. 0.5% of all machines went to VT. That ammounts to appoximately half a day of delivery delays.
Intel have been producing processors from 300 mm wafers some years now. Their 130 nm fab is based on it. IBM is doing the same at East Fishkill, and their 130 and 90 nm fab. Northwood and Prescott Pentiums and PowerPC 970s are all comming off 300 nm wafers.
OK, the article speaks of 3 dual core PowerPC 976-processors fabbed at 65 nm. These babies would do _at_least_ 3 GHz per core. That's a total to 18 GHz on 6 cores. It WILL beat the hellout of ANY Wintelbox this side of a full blown datacenter.
"I'm very sorry, Mr. G5, but your education is simply not relevant to the job you are applying for. It says here you are running Mac OS X 10.2.6, but we need someone with Mac OS X 10.2.5 experience."
Well.. The Power Mac G5 must run at least Mac OS X 10.2.7.. There might be an opening in the fall for someone with these qualifications?
1) POWER4 and PowerPC 970 is two different chips. 970 was derived from POWER4 for the light server/desktop market.
2) Linux runs just fine on POWER4 hardware as does it on 970 hardware. IBM's first machines using 970 (the blade module JS20) will run soley on Linux for half a year until AIX comes.
There are no such ting as "iTunes songs". iTunes is a regular MP3- and AAC-player. The songs that yoy buy from iTunes Music Store is in AAC-format, witch is a part of the MPEG-4 standard. There are no secrets, nor proprietairy formats here. iTunes can rip to AIFF, MP3 and AAC on Macs, and I would guess to WAV aswell in Windows. If your portable music player can play MP3s, WAVs and/or AAC music files then you are OK. iTunes stores its songs automaticly in a very nice directory hierarchy, or if you choose, in the folder hierarchy of your choice.
Yes! Since it states as much in the article. Before asking questions, it might be good to actually read the article.
Quotefrom the article: <blockquote>" It's important to note that the QuickTime codec used in this test is the same one used in Apple iTunes(but using a different coding mode). The samples were encoded in QuickTime's "Best" quality mode, while iTunes uses the "better" setting. This setting reportedly produces the same quality as "best" on 16-bit material. (Best is targeted at 24bit material)"</blockquote>
This is arrogant. Here in Guyana, someone donated a bunch of AppleBooks to Amerindian villages in the hinterland. When problems arose, there was (and remains) NO Apple vendor to provide hardware or support. So the machines fell out of use.
Do you really think that there are lot of PC vendors in Kenya, and do you think that they give any support? Omar have provided complete education for several indivuduals who now serve as support technicians, and he has a pretty large inventory of spare parts (not all Macs are in working when donated).
The facts remain that his installation have been working for over 5 years now, when similar PC-initiatives grinded to a halt pretty soon after initiation for variuos reasons. One is that the quality of avaiable PC hardware and competence leave everything to desire, and another one the fact that PC-folk just don't care about anything but the bottom line. This country is corrupt beyond belief and if a project like this isn't handled by enthusiasts nothing will work after some time. Some just don't care, prices went through the roof or everything got stolen.
The Swedish Mac-guru Ulf "Omar" Henriksson have single handidly shipped over 1500 used and refurbished Macs to schools, libraries and hospitals in Kenya. Every Mac was donated by Swedish individuals and businesses for this charity purpose.
In Kenya he have educated quite a lot users and admins in the ins and outs of Mac, the Mac OS and computers in general.

What is the relationship between GNU/Hurd, Darwin and MKLinux? All is based around a Mach-kernel. Are there any familiarity between them that have any relevance? Does the continuing work on Darwin and GNU/Hurd benefit from one another, and if so, in what respect?
I've bought 4 ADC/VGA-adapters and they work flawlessly with QuickSilver 800, 2x800 and 2x1 GHz. I can recommend these to anyone running two CRT displays. This must be a better solution than going out an buying an aditional Radeon 7000, cause that card wont run Quartz Extreme and costs about 3-4 times more.
The Horse Head Nebula is a smaller part of the Great Nebula-complex, which apparent size is considerably larger. Of course not! One card need a COMPUTER with a 400 W powersupply. There's a lot more than a graphics bord that needs power in a computer.

The PowerPC 970 (aka G5) IS a POWER-chip, so AIX and Linux will run great on it, but it's not a PowerPC-AS-chip so OS/400 won't.

In Norway we have similar rules: You cannot air commercial claiming something that might be false.
In Norway you also banned the Monty Python film "Life of Brian". Go figure.

I applaud your creative solution to one of the world's great problems.
Did I mention that the Macs went to hospitals and schools? What institutions would you donate to if you saw disease and ignorance as a problem?
