  2. SUVs on California Wants GPS Tracking Device in Every Car · · Score: 2, Insightful

I bet fuel consumption in California is not falling...

Why should you be taxed per mile when heavier vehicles damage or wear the roads down more? Fuel tax seems like the ideal way that these heavier vehicles can pay for their road use. They pay more because they cost more per mile driven.

If the fuel tax is not generating enough revenue, perhaps its time to raise the fuel tax? Not spend $300+ dollars to equip cars with GPS...

My last threes cars cost under $400 each and I've put about 80,000 miles on them total. I dont want to double the cost of the car with GPS.

I don't dispute that these networks are becoming more common, or atleast being used more. As a systems administrator, we have a seen a huge increase in mail storms and such in the past year, even in the past three months. Thousands upon thousands of machines trying to dictionary attack us. We see all the thousands of cable modems sending us double bounces email in a coordinated fashion overloading our front end mail machines. You skeptics can say its just the virus guys trying to make money or scare people. I honestly think its real, I've seen the effects. Whenever someone in my family comes to ask me about a computer, I steer them towards Apple, so I don't have to clean out their system full of spyware every few months.

    same engine, similar cars.

my next car will be a focus zx5 manual. it should be interesting to see what kind of mileage i get on that. i think i'm going to get the partial zero emission engine. pretty sweet stuff, puts out 1/15 of the pollution a normal car does. i *heart* the future.

anyone see us switching to an ethanol economy instead of a hydrogen economy? i kinda think that hydrogen cars are going to be like electric cars, neat concept, but not pratical in any sense. ethanol can use our existing infrastructure and its not as difficult to handle as hydrogen.

  10. geek running and parks. on Running for Geeks · · Score: 1

this site and the geek running is pretty cool. i am a geek who runs and bikes. the largest reason i like to run is i get away from technology, the comfort factor that accompanies so much of modern life. skip the ipod, the fancy shorts, the headphones, the gps, just get up and go. don't get me wrong, i dont skimp on shoes or socks, as if you do you end up injured, but i like being away from it all. it calms me.

anyone know of geekish organizations who campaign for more parks and trails? we should get together and lobby for it. it will be easier to establish parks now than in the future, as land prices go up. people often forget to plan ahead.

I think that the government can provide some services cheaper and better than private enterprise. Like auto insurance. I believe in Alberta, government supplies auto insurance, its cheaper than anywhere else in Canada by a large margin. And because the same agency deals with building and maintaining roads as paying out insurance premiums, if a certain section of road leads to more accidents, the government looks at redesigning the roads. While the intial outlay of cash is expensive, it ends up with safer roads and lower insurance rates. Everyone wins!

I'm definitely getting a mac for my mom instead of a pc. With the pc she has had, every 3 months there is always some virus or something like that that she is getting.
