  1. Re:HD Radio is great on Digital Signals Spark Static From AM Radio · · Score: 1

    Come on!!!

The same content? There are usually two HD stations for each FM station. Have you heard the second channels? I don't think so, not it not the same in the cities near my house. Have you compaired HD AM to regular AM? Regular AM has a normal static in the background. HD AM sounds as clear as an FM signal.

I can see you know how to use Wikipedia, but have you actually heard HD Radio? It doesn't sound like it.

Your research is...what? talking to a "stereo saleman"?

I forgot this was Slashdot. You can't say anything good about large companies. My bad.

Have you even heard HD radio. Have you compared it to XM and Sirius? HD is free, and it sounds better. Why is that so hard to understand?

I have HD in my living room, and I also have it in my car.

When you are in your car, with the engine and wind noise who cares what the audio quaily is. But when you get home and have a good sound system it is very easy to hear that HD radio has the best quality.

By the way, iPod's FM transmitter is not "digital", and it is not HD.

  3. HD Radio is great on Digital Signals Spark Static From AM Radio · · Score: 1

Digital radio sounds MUCH better then the old AM and FM. And the bit rate is also much higher than the Satellite providers XM and Sirius. It is CD quality audio on most stations.

So I can see why the radio stations, large and small, are rushing to push a free service that sounds much better than anything out there.

Most HD stations are still without commercials!! And from what I hear, they should be that way for at least the next year or two.

By the way, doesn't Ibiquity have a patent on the HD technology?

I think I will stick with regular free radio that displays the artist and title. Almost all the stations in the US are sending this info. You just need a radio that can display it. Just look for the RDS logo.

it annoys the piss out of me to hear something good and then not have the artist or song announced after it and have no clue how to find out to buy it.

Then use a radio that can display artist and title. Look for the letters "RDS" (Radio Data System). Most of the the big stations are sending this info.

He was absolutely convinced that we needed to be using this .net, even though he couldn't define what .net was. We were asking if he meant server, or studio, or C#, and he said "yeah all that stuff". Actually Sirius has 3 satellites all doing the same figure 8. But only 2 are over the united states at a time broadcasting.

And Sirius doesn't broadcast from NY, that is just where their studios are located. Their uplink site is located in Farmington Hills, MI.

And both companies have terrestrial repeaters. Last time I checked, XM has 778 repeaters and Sirius 104.

So I would say the the reception for XM would be better until sirius gets more towers up.

XM seems like the work of monopolistic, commercialistic, record-company-loving businesspeople, rather than music lovers, and their service is inferior.
Both companies have ties to a company that is a 'commercialistic and record-company-loving'. XM is partially owned by clearchannel, and has stations that are simply rebroadcasts of clearchannel stations (KISS FM). And Sirius uses clearchannel software to play its audio and to stream it over the internet.

so, either way you end up supporting the same businesspeople. :)
