At one time wasn't Apple the dominant form of Computer for end-users? Yet, somehow they seem to have lost a user base, even though that was the first computer introduced to a number of people.
Besides, if you want something that feels like Windows, try Xpde. It works good. Or try lycoris.
According to dictionary.com
Gator is short for alligator.
Gator is...
A large carnivorous reptile of the Crocodile family, peculiar to America. It has a shorter and broader snout than the crocodile, and the large teeth of the lower jaw shut into pits in the upper jaw, which has no marginal notches. Besides the common species of the southern United States, there are allied species in South America.
I believe that's an appropriate name for the company. Spyware they are. They take info, sell it to advertisers and return the skewed results to you.
Gator IS SpyWARE!
By royal decree of ___INSERT_NAME_HERE___ Gator shall hereby be know as SpyWare for the extent of eternity.
> And it takes a lot to make a 7-year-old WinME system worse than it already is.....
I think I see your problem. Windows ME wasn't made in 1996. Unless..... Oh my! You must be from the future! So what is longhorn like, future boy? I'd like to see it myself, but I don't have an extra 1.21-Gigawatts.
Wow. I believe your name says it all. "Overly Critical Guy"
First. Thanks. You have effectively done your part to stop the slashdot effect by not reading the article. Thanks.
First off, since you're talking about Microsoft and Linux, I'll assume you're talking about the first story. This "sentence by Bill Gates" was by Steve Ballmer. I can tell you've been paying attention.
Second, this time Microsoft started talking about Linux first. Does that mean we have to start using M$ in every sentence? No. However, it would be nice to hear how Microsoft's research compares to the research done by others here though.
> "'There is no road map for Linux, nobody who has his rear end on the line. We think it's an advantage a commercial company can bring--we provide a road map, indemnify customers. They know where to send e-mail.
Besides, even if they don't know where to send the email, I'm sure SoBig does.
Here's an idea. Buy offsite storage, like an ftp server. Remove your harddrive. Only use a ramdisk locally. When you need to save something, ftp it to your server. boot off of the network or a CD-ROM. Takes away most of the hard drive noise.:P
> Learn that these days, even articles can be Falmebait, let alone Replies.
So how do I go about modding the article down?:P
There is some truth in what he said. Fortunately, it doesn't just apply to Linux. I know some Microsoft zealots who would argue about topics they don't know about to see someone switch from Linux/BSD/Apple. Kinda funny. He's my best friend. I'm a Linux user. Who would've though we could be friends? Back to the point though..... Every platform has their share of zealots and priests and a greater portion of happy users.
The Linux Community does have problems, but so the Microsoft community and the Apple community. Even the physcial community where I live has it's far share of problems. I'm not going to say we're perfect, and I'm not gonna say that everyone else has these problems, but I will say that computers are supposed to be tools. Each user has a tool of their choice. Some will use one tool just because they like it. Others will use a different tool, because they like it more. Either way, there are many tools to do the job, sometimes we just get carried away telling which tool we like best.
> So, now that you mention it, where are the open papers on Quicktime, and the Window Manager technologies for OSX? Oh wait, those are closed...
Why we might ask?
Why, to keep Microsoft from "innovating" new features into their OS, of course! How else do you keep your ideas from ending up in Microsoft Windows Important Productivity Thingy 2005XP?
> This time, please do something really useful, not only doing such silly thing as DOS'ing windowsupdate
You can for instance, delete necessary files for Internet connection... in this case Microsoft will be in a *real* shit if nobody can connect the internet to download patches!
As fun as this is, better things could be done.
Modify the hosts file, so that whenever something requests microsoft.com or windowsupdate.com or windowsupdate.microsoft.com they get redirected to apple.com or maybe a fake windows site.
Modify the registry values where Windows keeps its information about windows updates. Add all the keys, so that unless they rewrite their windowsupdate script, it would appear that all updates are already installed.
And yes, I was joking when I put "Longword". Don't bother giving 15 posts telling me "You idiot! You don't even know the name of the new product! In soviet russia...."
> No, I doubt that... Longhorn will be what Windows 95 was
You mean a insecure, unstable, rush-job OS that added an ugly gray bar to the bottom of the screen? Okay. That sounds great. I've been meaning to upgrade.
If Longword will be what 95 was, why not just downgrade to 95? Save yourself the licence! You deserve it!
> I suspect that anything Microsoft can do, KDE can make it work right before Microsoft can make theirs work right, no matter how much headstart Microsoft has.
No. I haven't experienced them either. Right after it blue-screens, it reboots, before I have a chance to enjoy the BSOD experience. I've seen over my fair share of memory dumps on XP. Less BSOD than 95 and ME, more than 2000 and about the same as 98.
Course half the computer I work on seem possessed...
And in other news, the software giant, Microsoft has just recieved patents for all different shades of blue. The excessive use of blue in Microsoft OSes prompted the company to buy this color.
Also, according to the Redmond-based monolith, all other colors, containing the color blue belong to Microsoft. This means Microsoft gets royalties for the sale of white lights, and a tax from anyone spending time in the sun.
> Like the waste of memory when you code programs in C or Pascal instead of assembly?
Yes. That is waste. It is hardly noticable, though, because it doesn't add very much overhead. In the case of using assembly, the lose of portability and increase of complexity would be more troublesome than the increase in file size.
> GNOME and KDE are themeable and already have full capabilities for variable sizing of just about every component of the windowing environment.
Which leads to a yet another pet complaint. No standardization. Too much freedom in the GUI and I must agree. p
Freedom is a bad thing? Is that like "Take my freedom or give me death!"? Seriously though, the ability to customize the OS to work and act the way I want, without making assumsions about what resolution I might run is a good thing.
> Make it profitable and they'll suck up to you. How hard can that be to understand? Oh, I get it. Profit is not a part of the open source equation...
Profit is a part of the equation, it just isn't the primary goal.
> You don't think we'll be having bigger screens by then? That's one thing that's really holding you open source guys back. You don't dare to gamble on the capabilities of the future hardware.
Yeah, who needs a puny monitor? I'll just use the one in my flying car, or maybe just plug myself back into the matrix.
Besides, if you want something that feels like Windows, try Xpde. It works good. Or try lycoris.

Where can a person download it? You know, the ftp-installer?
First. Thanks. You have effectively done your part to stop the slashdot effect by not reading the article. Thanks.

Yes, but think of what it does for the cooling.
Napster 2.0 - Dead. Or at least limping, and on life support
iTunes - Free, Crossplatform, Optional.
So how do I go about modding the article down? :P

Been three days. Mostlikely, the number of ITunes downloads will slow down, but the buys should keep going fairly well.
