  1. God Bless Fiber Optic on ISP Rise Against P2P Users · · Score: 1

I'm willing to put down the $50 a month for my new fiber optic line. I'm allowed 500GB of total down traffic a month. I guess Verizon assumes that if you're buying a fios setup, you're not doing it just to e-mail pictures to grandma.

  2. Just how pointless this is... on On Apple vs Apple · · Score: 2, Insightful

  3. The Value of a Complete Package on Apple to Face iPod Clone Attack · · Score: 2, Interesting

The reason people buy iPods and love them so much is the same reason people buy pre-packaged vacations or use travel agents. Sure, you could go book your tickets with an airline, find a hotel and book that, research a dozen locations to go to at your destination and when they are open, and do all the logisitcs, or you can just have somebody else do it. Sometimes its worth the fee to save your time.

Sure, my iPod cost more than a lot of other stuff on the market, and it doesn't have video, but it's so freaking easy to use. Now, I love playing around with tech toys like the next guy, but ease of use is ease of use. Pop in a CD, rip it and file it away without worrying about setting up the files and folders correctly. If I hear an artist Ilike, I can download their latest album in 4 or 5 clicks instead of driving over to Best Buy. Pop my iPod in, and it puts all my new music on, updates my playlists, puts my photos on, and updates my Outlook calendar. Simple. I didn't have to do anything. I didn't have to open up 4 programs like I would have to with other playesr or a cell phone.

So why would I possibly buy one of these merged cell phones and music players. All of their synching software I've seen in bloatware with extremely slow upload speeds. Very few allow native mp3 playing, so you have to run their converter for half an hour. And given my level of trust for the cell phone industy, I can only assume there is some low level spyware involved so that I can get some fun text messages telling me I'll enjoy the next Black Eyed Peas single. Then I can hop in my car where my cell phone won't play to my radio, so I hve to use headphones. My battery will be dead by the time I get to work. Gee, what a fun end-user eperience that will be.

All of that being said, I really do want to see what a rael iPod killer would like like. My bet is it will probably come from Apple themselves (PowerPod?). In the mean time, I'm happy with a product that I get a kick out of playing with that is also simple enough for my mother to use (seeing 60 year old woman who can barely surf the internet be able to plug in a Shuffle and use it correctly is amazing).

  5. The Search For Prior Art on Dell Infringes on Patent by Selling Overseas? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Okay, yeah, these guys are slime and need to go back to the hole they crawled out of. Let's help speed up that process.

The patent abstract is this: An international transaction system for operation over the internet/intranet provides a pre-transactional calculation of all charges involved in any international transaction. Upon the option of the customer, the goods can be viewed on catalogue sheets translated to a language of the customer's choice, and the price provided in a currency selected by the customer. The customer also has the option of initiating the order with automatic credit authorization, generation of an electronic title or commercial invoice and arrangements and payment of shipping charges and any taxes and import/export duties.

It is dated December 29th, 1997. Let's do a little thinking and find any instances of prior art. Yeah, it should be a "dude, we all know that was happening before then" scenario, but let's actually find something concrete and send the bastards packing. Let the happy hunting begin.

  17. What my boss gave us last christmas on Christmas Bonuses? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've worked at a graphic design print shop for about a year and a half now. Last year we had a great year because some of our competitors left town and we were able to produce some really nice, public work on a few projects. So our boss gave us two days off before Christmas but wante dus to have an office party with our wives, girlfriends, friends, and ex-coworkers (that we're on good terms with). So me and the guys got a few days off and came back for the Christmas party on a Friday night. When we came in we noticed that all of our workstations had been supremely upgraded. Gone were our old macs. We got brand new G4s with hi def monitors, ipods, huge Wacom tablets (special ordered from Wacom with our company logo on them), 5.1 speaker systems, great personal headphones, new office phones, new high back leather chairs. The works. On top of that he gave us each $500 bonuses and $200 business check cards so we could buy more stuff for our workstations. Needless to say we were raelly happy and not one of us has quit in the last year. Sure, we know we're not getting new G5s this Christmas and we already have all of our great goodies, but we know our boss respects us and wants us to be happy at work. He could have given us bigger bonuses and gotten us the computers later, but he wanted us to be really happy and motivated for the next year. Plus, I would have spent all that money on a bunch of crap anyways, but now I have the work area possible, a personal ipod, and happy worokers to deal with everyday. Wouldn't give it up for anything.

Instant jukebox for our home theater. We even got a wireless keyboard, mounted it to the wall and trade off the reciever to whoever is broadcasting for a party. Now if my memory serves me right, these RIAA guys are goingafter the people with the most mp3s. So the plan is simple. First of all, copy and paste all my "legal" mp3s so i have 2000. Then, run a quick renaming batch script to rename all the mp3s to songs and bands covered by the RIAA. Then log onto Kazaa and wait for my lawsuit to happen.
