Yea, i'll agree that russia probably is ignored, but as with all fights, the Victor writes the history... we America did win the Space Race, as we made it to the Moon.
However, I dont feel as though russia is completly ignored, as they are always protatyed as our vile competitor. As for technology Russia has contributed to the World... I cant comment on that, as I cant think of much. But at the same time, NASA has contributed many things (ie Velcro).
I Think what is good here is that Russia is trying to do this. Do I Think they will succseed? I think its doubtful, but I wont underestimate the Russians. Why is this great, simple they've set a goal. Sure, we have one too, build the ISS.
Yea, its a new venture for us, but its not that challenging, as say putting a man on the moon 30 years ago. Its also not just our own goal. This is both good, and bad.
The Bad: We have little accountablity, yes we share in trying to get it accomplised, and we want to see it done. I certanly do. But, its not firing up the nation like Kenedy did 40 years ago. Half the ppl in the country probably don't even care.
The Good: We're working together! Its a global community now, so this makes all the more sence. Global Econmy, Global Science. Has to be good.
Solution: Set a friggin goal that is a real challange, akin to the Apollo program. Put a man on Mars. I know we have plans to do it... but our government doesn't understand it... really. Perhaps doing the international thing with it will help. OR, why dont we try settling down on the Moon a bit... its been awhile since we've been there.
Seriously, there muse be some company out there willing to help fund an establishment on the moon... or a trip to mars.
This is soundling like MS and.NET and C#. Well... i guess id rather have Java, then an MS product... cause id be driving and playing multi-player Space Invaders when suddenly my cellphone would BSOD and id have to take my other hand off the wheel so i could Ctrl-Alt-Del my phone... (by entering the ASCII codes...)
ARG!;)
But hey... following amiga traits... i'll bet it'll be the first phone that'll be able to full-screen decompress a dvd;)
There are many tools out there for doing DL. Ive had experince with them from a developer end, oppesed to the student end. Heres a few that I am familair with:
Blackboard: Its basicly $20k+ of perl scripts that are constantly broken and cant do what you want. DONT USE IT!
FirstClass: A very nice email/conference system. It has Mac and Windows clients and a Web Client( Which does not have all features). This is a very nice product that provides many features ( ie drop boxes, chat, email... ).
LearnSys (?) Something like that... used net meeting as a basis for a whiteboard (obvisouly very platform specific)... but you could do polling and give voice to a person at a time... It seemed ok... only did evaluate it.
Prometheius - A cold fusion appilcation... not familar with it... just know it exists and i belive its supposed to be could. Hey, you can get the source;)
Other technologies ive used in conjunction with DL are RealVideo, IRC, Video Tapes ( Taped lectures sent to the students), CDs with content (much like the Video Tapes).
On the cheap end of things (as all of these listed here cost $$ )... i dont know of much.
Video streaming wise ive had many experinces (Real, Quicktime, Windows Media ). Basicly Real has the most support, but is VERY expensive. Quicktime a bit cheaper (get server softwear for free!). Still need the encoder, but u can mahe multirate streams like you can with Real and Windows Media. Window Media is the cheapest...the server comes with Win2kServer ( u can dl it for NT) and the encoder is free. It also has the best quality I have seen for streaming media.
Those are what i can recall right now... Of course you could always implement your own web-based system, but that carries a lot of issues...
Yes, 200 fps is crazzy. But with those 200 fps come alot of other 'features' that make it more realistic, such as T&L, foggin ect... Surely i dont need those 200fps, but the realizm is what I really want. So give some 100 fps and really good textures, curves ect.
I totaly understand the allure of a clean UI, hell i use black box;) Yet, NS6 UI hasnt angered me yet, to the point of using something like Skipstone. im sure the day will come, sooner, rather than later... and the theme is kinda cool.
Until that day comes, I do relish in the fact that NS6 UI's is driven by xml... so one can hack away at it... till one is content. I just dl'd this release, and messed with it a bit. Removed those anoying links on the bottom. Now the NS logo links to nowhere... yea these are simple hacks, that really dont do much for speed... but remove some anoying things (in my oponion).
Next on my list is to possibly replace the logo with a slashdot one... and link it to slashdot;)... that and hack out the sidebar. If I want a sidebar, id use IE... i use NS because it isnt IE, and I really dont like the whole "Oh MS has some new GUI idea lets copy it mentatlity" ( No offence here... just a little steam)(I also realize that this idea prolly really came from Opera to begin with...).
My only question is, how long be for Apple and its stupid lawerys try to pass the theme off as being an Aqua rip-off and sue?
Maybe someone outta extend this and write a napster client that'll use DNS... so it can get around napster blocks... tho i guess it mite be a bit slow... and you could really only use it for getting mp3s... it still would be awesome.
Hell, We shouldn't stop at Usenet... maybe someone with a lotta money otta pay off those annoying email spam companies to spam everyone via email;) Worst thing that might hap'n then is a Spam CO might get shut down (No Complaints here!)
I used to watch the news every evening a couple of years ago... that was before i was into the Internet. That was like my Freshmen year of high school.
Today, I watch a little news on TV... if it happens to be on... ok. But i Make no effort to watch it. Now, my primary source of news is Slashdot and word of mouth. If its that important I'll hear about it.
Why?
Simple, Its Filtering Mechanism. The news (this isn't jsut Commerical news, but papers and radio as well), has become 'bloated.' I live in upstate NY, and i looked at the front page of the morning paper last week. What did i see, a survey that Atlanta, georgia has the highest rate of births on the interstate... which went on to say they had no real numbers to back this up.
Is that news? If i tried to pass that off in a English class... god knows what kind of grade I'd get.
And this morning, the front page is coverd with news of Survivor (HYPE), Human embroy laws and A big pic of the NY State Fair. If you look at page 3, you will find out that ~140 people died in a plane crash in the Persian Gulf.... Uhh... what happend here... are plane crashes so common that they aren't front page news? Not even a mention? Or has our society just become that obsessed with quasi-entertaing shows?
As for broadcast news... the Democratic covrage might as well have been the SuperBowl... Matt there is talk'n with some Polictical experts 'Well if Gore wants to win.. blah blah...' Not to be apothetic towards politics... i felt like it was the supper-bolw, with out the Good Commericals.
This kind of crap is why I'm sick of the News. Some of it is good. I think it is important to know what is happening localy and globally. What happens elsewhere has an ever increasing affect on what happens at home. But if there wasn't so much crap.
I think AOL deserves it... in my opinion most things that AOL buys... winds up more screwy than before. Despite my lack of sympathy towards Nullsoft for selling out to AOL... Im still glad Justin had this much of an affect on them:)
Ahh... true, to a point. But why does everyone say that linux wont make it? Inconsitancies in user interafaces, barring ye ole shell. Yes its important to seem native, yet at the same time this can be costly.
Look at Java, awt and swing. They're the most platform-indepent toolkits right now. Yet look at all the problems there were with AWT, i could create a FooWizBangBar widget in Windows, but couldn't under MacOS because MacOS didn't nativley support it. That would mean i'd need to take this platform independt code, and make it extermly OS typed. Swing however attempts to address this problem. Such is the case with Mozilla.
Widgets are based at the abstract layer, so i can create FooWizBangBar in any OS, wether or not it nativley supports it. And if I'm really concerned with the L&F, then I can use skins for each OS, that makes the App look native.
Besides all basic functions are the same in any OS... buttons, text fields ect. And you never know when someone might need to use a differnet OS for work... if the apps they need to use are identical on both platforms, there is no new learning curve.
Use Mozilla. Its already got all of the cross-clatforms (Mac,Win,X,Be...), and all the gui is written in xml. Its nice and simple, easy to modify, and importantly, looks the same on all platforms! Sure.. its isnt finished yet, but if this product wont be realsed for a while, it might be a reall good idea to investigate;)
I agree, at least to a point. Linux still isnt user friendly enough for the masses. But its alot better than even two years ago. However, I fear that linux could become that fat, bloated cow of an OS we call Windows.
At least in the desltop market. Thankfully package management has various advantages, so a server can still be nice and sleek. What worries me is the Desktop. Yes, thats the place to make kinux user-friendly, yet at the same time, that is the place linux seems to be bloating at now.
I've used Afterstep, Enlightment/Gnome, blackbox, OpenWin, CDE and a few others. Some of them just suck (CDE), and some are really cool (blackbox). Yes, I suppose to some degree I like a minamalist's approach, as I abhor the whole IE-Explorer BS of windows. My fear here lies in that these window managers are getting too bloated. Yea, I know i can easily go change mine, edit a few rc files and have a different faster desktop. But does Joe User? No, but, Joe User can use whatever config tool that comes with KDE, Gnome, Enlightment and poof!
Yes, eye candy is nice;) but at what cost does it become too much? Frankly, I finaly got sick of how sluggish the Enlightment/Gnome setup is, and went to blackbox. Sure I dont have all those handy things from the gnome bar, yet my desktop is soo much faster.
Microsoft has proven a point, avrage users use what is pushed infront of them (IE, Office, ect). Needless to say, if the desktop-masses were to use Linux, such would be the case again. I think we need to figure out what makes a good window manager vs eye candy. If for no other reason, one must realize that us slashdotters may have the latest and greatest hardware, but many companys dont keep all their emploeeys on the the cutting edge. Hence eye candy becomes bloatware.
Thinking about this, mainly how incredibly easy it is to write a virus such as the ILOVEYOU one, and have it spread like wild fire is insane. I think Microsoft simply never thought about this kind of issue. At some point, they let programing become way to easy (VB) and also intergated everything too much (IE).
If Microsoft had spent time desging all of their componets, they would have been intelligent enough to not give a script inside of Outlook access to such things as the registry. Duh! This is just poor deisgn. How does MS get it's security ratings on NT?.... they must not test them with Outlook running...
By far, the thing that bothers me the most is how the world, at least most of it, will go back to normal brainless operation mode. Within two weeks, few people will remember this and everyone will be back to using Outlook as if it was reading a newspaper; nice, safe and secure. Are coperations that stupid?
Last year we get hit by Milessia, basicly using the same 'features,' then this year its the same but nastier. Hell, if half the companies who got hit with Milessia last year, abonded outlook and some other crap... this propbably wouldn't have been half as bad.
I wonder why they don't. I guess most people just listen to the 'its a feature not a bug' speel and feel safe'n'secure. Stop being dumb people! Just becuase it's default doesn't mean its worth the space on your harddrive.
On a side note that i realized, with Mozilla ever nearing completion... will this kind of thing be able to plauge users of Mozilla as well? Will i be able to write some javascript and DCOM and re-create the virus for Netscape 6 users?
It is my understanding that Intel would be better for real-teim floating point operations. Though, i realize this might've been more true a year ago then now. Sure the Athalon has a great bus, Alpha's and more cache... but the Intel has the FPU. Of course, multi-processing it would be even better...
I think the idea of basing a class on the matrix seems a bit weird, but i can see point. I just wish more teachers/schools would find vaule in sci-fi. Im a sphomore at college now, and when i was in high school, out of the 30+ stories we read (short stories to novels), only a handful were of the sci-fi genere. This always disspleased me, as I could pick up some good sci-fi book, and read about life in 1000 years, but at the same time the author is making a point about life in general. Just the same as the author who wrote about some 12 year old girl coming-of-age in 1920. The second one is just plain boring, and doesnt have much more value, then perhaps being written by a famous author. Of course most of the sci-fi i read, well was written by a famous author too:)
Well thats my 2 cents. If i was there, i'd take the class... i find philosphy interesting and the matrix amazing...
Yea, true, but why do you think they arent Y2k compliant, it wont be released until Januray 19, 2000. So it'll beet the Y2k bug, instead it will have the Y2100 bug.:))
God i love this crap. And people persist using IE/Windoze. And we wonder why they waste soo much time on fixing computers in the business world. Why dont they wake up and smell the coffe. Perhaps they will soon...
Interesting idea. It sure would be nice to filter out some of that crap. But, hey i got slashdot, which does a great job of that for me. Clotho is like self-censorship, imposed by some AI. Which if it is self-imposed, is it as bad as government imposed? What if someone wanted to listen to those debates in DC? I dont now, so if i see one on the tube, i just change the channel, or hit the off button. No AI required.
Maybe im a little out-of it this morning, but all i have to say, has anyone seen the Matrix?;)) Im not-anti AI, but watch a program that is told to filter info out for us, will start to filter out info for its own good. OK, i admit thats far fetched. But it could happen. Put a program in charge of our most important commodity, information, it could happen, if the AI is real good. However i dont see AI getting that good for a while yet.
Despite it... I still think it would be cool to see us develop such a high level of AI.

Hmmm... a few questions:
... those are the few trek refs i can rember after looking at code for 12 hours ...
1. Can it dynamicly create random enviroments based upon Sherlock Homels.
2. Provide a 'back-up' doctor.
3. Become the nervus center for a artifical life.
Ok
All i can say .. or quote is...
Doh!
