I have an above average understanding of Microsoft Licensing. I am a SMB consultant, I read the Gear-up catalog, and have read pages upon pages of microsoft.com licensing info.
As I understand it, BartPE is based on WinPE. WinPE/BartPE is legal, IF you have a unused xp/2003 license.
SO.. If Geek Squad has 1500 techs, with 1500 BB PE Cds, then they also have to have 1500 VLA or retail Box XP licenses. Unused means that current license cannot be in use on a PC.
So my question is..... Will MS investigate to see if BB is using the proper licensing on their PE CD? Or will MS ignore this because BB sell so much of their software?
Thats not true. OEM Keys only work on OEM Media, but they ARE NOT brand specific. I know I use a homemade OEM CD almost every day.
Although I have noticed lately having to call MS and verify the brand of PC to reactivate.
What about somthing like Sharepoint Services. Have a public facing Sharepoint site, some custom forms, and maby even a calander.
You could even post some documentation, like an explaination as to WTF "PC load Letter" means.
So, I didnt RTFA, but I've read the post. Now this wouldn't probally be allowed to win the prize or anything, but it would be somewhat cool to get somthing like SonicOS, or a PIX os, or even a Linksys 54g OS running inside VMWare.
I'd love to be able to download VMWare images of the PIX os to be able to simulate a network full of Windows boxen and PIX firewalls.
Dumb question:
I have 2 lcds that are foubared, 1 that has a weird green tint to it and 1 that blinks on and off and is discolored. Is there any hope for fixing these, or should I toss them?
A used car has a depriciation value. A used car has an unknown history, phyisical wear and tear, and could fail to function hours after you have purchased it.
A software license has no phyisical wear and tear. It dosnt exist as a material object. All it is is a piece of paper that has to be renewed (software assurance), for a cost, in the future. The value of the license is only in how long it is good for. A used software license that is 1 year old at 10% discount is better than a used 3 day old used Lexus at a 50% discount
At the bottom of the page from TFA I get a Google AdWords box saying I can download DVD Quality Episode III for only 99 cents.
Hope that helps Lucas get his extra earnings.
I have cable, but only for internet access. Is it my fault that I accidently hooked up a line to the TV and channels worked?
Plus 15 months after signing up for Comcasts introductry rate of $29.99 a month, that is all I am paying. $60 a month for Internet is way overpriced.
I would never pay for cable TV.

4) anonymous/getaclue@slashdot.org
5) cd pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.0.1/win32/en-US
6) get firefoxsetup.exe
Wow! No I just got a web browser, without using a web browser.
Last time I worked on a Dell, it had Dell jukebox or Music Match. Compaqs have their own version. As do I am sure, Gateway, Emachine, Acer, etc... Probally the only major OEM meanfacturer that dosnt include a media player that I could think of is IBM. And thoes are buisness machines and priced out of the consumer market. Hell, if you try to install AOL it tries to take over your media files as the default player, and AOL installs REAL.
With all thoes options and choices, I cant imagine buying a PC from a major manufacturer and having to return it because it won't play MP3s.
I know that right now we are talking about desktop computers, but in a corporate enviroment you need to consider the server. The one thing I have NEVER understood about MS Server is the need for CALs. You bought a sever. Clients connect to a server. BUT, you need to pay extra for every client that connects, and you have to pay double if a client connects inside and outside the office (terminal services). Same thing with Exchange. You have to buy licenese for clients to connect to the Exchange Server.
It remindes me of selling dryers and stoves with out the cord to plug it in. Completly useless without the cord. Except you can (99% of the time) use your old cord from the old stove. Can you use Exchange 5.5 CALs on an Exchange 2k3 Server?
I helped a client move from NT4 and Exchange 5.5 to 2003. $10,000 for the software and related CALs for 4 servers and 60 clients. Notice that that does not include the cost of the hardware for the servers, or the OS's and software for the clients.
The biggest draw of Itunes is that is is instant gratifaction. You hear a clip, you want the album, you get it NOW!
No driving to the store, hunting through overpriced bins, etc... And after you purchase that music, and saved it to your fileserver, you want to be able to listen to it wherever, whenever. So rip the DRM out of it and play it on your MP3 player, your Linux box, your toster, whatever.
Plus, My g/f just bought an album off of ITunes for $10. Some obscure band that she just had to have a copy of their album. You think my local Worst Buy stock that album. I doubt it. Amazon.com had it for 17.99, plus a week for shipping.
Of course the first thing she asked me was to put it on her USB thumb drive so she could listen to it at work. I told her se couldnt, because she could only listen to it on Itunes, and of corse she cant install Itunes at work.
So I learned to use Hymn and ripped it to MP3 and she annoyed her coworkers all day playing New Age Goth music
I use XMMS Control.
XMMS runs on a pc connected to the Amp that plays music through out the office. Control is done from any Web Browser.
Office music battles are great
I work for a support company. We do networks and hardware repair for all sorts of companies. Anything from $200 an hour lawyers to to heavy industrial.
My point is at the industrial places I have seen a lot of computers. I've had to fix PC's with 3 inches of metal shavings inside the case. Layers of black nasty dust. Computers you don't even want to touch because they are so nasty. Puddles of oil on them.
The majoriy of them still run, still work fine. Espically considering that some of them are Pentium based PC running 95 and they are still working in this enviroment.
Get a used PC, or put togather one from your parts bench. Put it in your shop. Forget about it, it will run forever. Just try to keep it away from the sander.

Acronis is the Shit. But I dont know about their licensing terms.

How does somthing as blatently plagerized as that make it into every Sunday Newspaper in the US, but yet downloading the same movie that its stolen from gets you tossed into jail?
