I didn't really consider that so much though because I don't really listen to music. 30 gigs is a lot! You must have a lot of music (unless they're wavs).
I'd love to work on a homebrew gamecube project! I'm considering getting a gamecube for non-pc games (something more relaxing, fun, and stable hopefully), and for C++ developement. I'm 1 in 1,000,000 on that though.
"techno-babble" is just jargon. Jargon exists for everything you could possibly do. Writers use jargon for literary terms, mechanics use jargon for part names, etc.
I don't know about making things simple for people, but jargon is extremely useful (since
it's just terms in a specific context).
Maybe if you work in a certain job, you should learn all the jargon associated with it.
When is a mouse button ever used in a keyboard combination? All I know is the windows and linux ways and they work fine (the difference being linux has a different style of copy/paste and doesn't support drag and drop in many things).
I have a 30 gig and a 40 gig (but they're for different operating systems and quite isolated), and if you're not pirating media, nor doing any digital video stuff, I can't imagine why anyone would need something more - although, 30 gigs could easily be filled by chess tablebases, but those can be compressed to 8 gigs or so. (and it would take at least a week to generate them)
I RMA'd my 40gig Maxtor and when it came back I put linux on it. While I was waiting for the drive, Windows ran on a 5400RPM 30gig by Maxtor, so now I'm keeping my disk setup like that. I really haven't noticed any slowness in Windows, and Windows is what I game in. (It does take Windows a longer time to load the desktop, even after I cleaned up startup locations in the registry - that slowness could just mean Windows needs a format though. When it's running though, I don't notice any difference.)
So for storage, 5400RPM would be quite perfect for me. And I assume it would be cheaper.
This makes me wonder if those who write movie reviews really know what they're talking about.
I know I couldn't really critique a movie. All acting looks pretty much the same to me, and if I go to a movie expecting non-stop action, then I wouldn't consider that a downside of the movie.
Do movie reviewers use common (and incorrect) ideas about movies: movies in the countryside in another time about love are good, and movies with say, a terminator from the future are bad? Maybe when it's about something so subjective that one shouldn't read a review at all...
That's exactly the reason I stopped playing MTG: The Cost. (clever, eh) It's fun to play any strategy game, and card games are portable. I had about 1000 cards, but very few good ones. That wasn't enough to make a very decent deck at all. You're really limited to strategies when you have to buy them. That takes the fun away.
With the online version though, you can play for free (it used to be a one time connectivety fee), but I'm just turned off of MTG right now.
(Aside: I'm really missing strategy games, and haven't found a good one in a while. Nethack was fun to play because you can play so precisely, but it became boring for me. Chess is cool, but the learning curve is pretty steep. When getting good means studying... well, fun and studying don't mix. Any good strategy games (with an active community)? Tell me.)
Could the statistics be like this because young males do many more stupid things, thus dragging our average down a lot? Or maybe the military is affecting it. At least it's nice to know that genetics probably isn't the reason that males average less.
I got freenet yesterday... it is REALLY slow. And sometimes links are broken, except you don't really know if they're broken or if they're maybe too slow or something. I think the idea is cool and it seems implemented nicely, but it's so slow!
Do you know how much bandwidth it's going to use? I can't really afford to upload 90 gigs per month (for example).
I think the linux community likes linux because it's free and open source. Hence, nobody cares about an old operating system (that probably runs on strange hardware).
The kids' education will be fine, even without WiFi! The real comp sci students get produced at home, anyway. I cannot imagine how WiFi would improve my college education even. (I'm not defending them, though)
I got a copy of Magic: The Gathering Planewalker replaced a long time ago. It had a scratch right out of the box, and at the time there was some sort of US Postal strike. I had to wait over 4 months!
It seems to me like it will be (well, like always) easier and more convenient for people to just crack their games.
I never realized how much these new console games are like the old ones: you collect items for whatever bonuses, and you can try again when you've beat it to get them all. And it's difficult to achieve all that too.
I think I've been playing open ended games for too long.
I don't think it would purposely blunder if it had an obvious mating pattern in the endgame (I don't play so badly it would scale itself like that!). But maybe it couldn't search quick enough with how it was setup.
I think generally engines still aren't great in the endgame, except - you're right - if they find the pattern in their tablebase. The version of Fritz I had came with a tablebase generator. It can generate 30 gigs of endgames! And that was only with 5 or 6 pieces max.
Name some good titles! I haven't seen any that were interesting enough to buy the GC for, and I really want a console system (but the XBox sucks imo and my brother has a PS/2 so it's redundant). It's probably hard because I'm coming from PC gaming and all I really do nowadays is play FPS online. But I really want a game I can sit down and play for 20 hours with replayability!
Copying mp3s != media piracy
I didn't really consider that so much though because I don't really listen to music. 30 gigs is a lot! You must have a lot of music (unless they're wavs).
GTK games? I can only think of things developers might be interested in playing with. Nethack! (wouldn't tie up my computer at least)
YOU might not be interested in knowing when your toast is done remotely, but I sure am.

... you might already have a Gamecube.

Or a book or two.. doesn't that stuff get compressed though?

Good thing there is a Nobel Prize to keep scientists researching!

Geez man, get a life. Go play some football or get an STD or something.
The kids' education will be fine, even without WiFi! The real comp sci students get produced at home, anyway. I cannot imagine how WiFi would improve my college education even. (I'm not defending them, though)
Sure it's like cops and robbers. Except in this case, it's turning kids into violent, non-feeling, isolated members of society!
And you just *know* the next step will be punitive file deletions, hard drive formatting, etc.
Slippery slope fallacy!

Where else do you get months of gameplay like that? Nowhere!
Nethack! Of course you'll be working your way onto your first quest level by then - and dying shortly after.
Thanks for the list. It gives me another console to consider.
