  1. As an attorney.. on Digital Camera Image Verification · · Score: 2, Interesting

I would point out that there was a noted case where someone took pictures with a reduced scale ruler to make a crack or pothole look that much bigger. The picture was all original but already manipulated.... Ultimately I think I would go with affidavits (this is a true, accurate and unmodified picture of what it purports to be) containing a print in b&w on the affidavit as well as an md5 checksum of the pic file or files if I was attaching a cdrom or floppy. There are issues here about submitting info this way which I wont go into, but this may be appropriate in certain situations. And btway- I really like my canon a300. CF, AA batteries, 3.2meg.. no zoom function though, and a little large.

  3. BSG's morale: Open source is clearly the way to go on New Battlestar Galactica - Worth a Series? · · Score: 1

The moral of Battlestar Gallactica ("BSG") could practically have been written by Linus Tovalds himself: Dont trust closed source computing, if you want to have truly secure computing it must be open source. In BSG, Baltar is a computer scientist who decides to once again write more advanced programs. Seems computer science was stalled after the first cylon war and AI research is a no no. He in turn confers with his girlfriend (who happens to be a cylon- hello has anyone in the future ever heard of a security check??? and just why are they using the defense mainframe?????? ) who helps him write it. Once the war starts the cylons not only have a complete fleet deployment schedule, but the software backdoors that they have now gotten into every military ship (and many civilian ones) allows them to literally turn the ships off which are then picked off while drifting helplessly. The Galactica is of course immune becouse of its agea and its commanders determination to keep it free of any kind of computer network! Clearly having an open software review process (instead of relying on Baltar and his cylon girlfriend!) might have prevented this. In a similar vein, this is undoubtedly an apocraphyl tale about our current situation where the US military relies on Windows, and in turn MS has shown China the Windows source code. No wonder China decided to go to Linux!

  4. Toshiba Magnia!! on Low Powered Mini-Server for the Masses · · Score: 1

Theres already a device like this out and Ive got one- Toshiba Magnia. Check on Ebay- I got mine New in sealed box for $170! Its a 533 mhz, low power (90w internal), and a bit larger. It has most of the same software features using arctus security linux, 7 ethernet ports and a crossover port for expantion, 2 laptop :( hard drives-(mine came with one 20gb but the top of the line has two 40's) (it also has a mirror hard drives function). Wireless is not built in but it has a pcmcia slot for that purpose. Also it has no USB ports.

  6. About these CPU temps.. on AMD Optimal BIOS settings + Overclocking Guide · · Score: 2

The article starts with the note that you should keep your cpu temp below 55'C (42'C w/water cooling) when overclocking. WTF--k are they talking about? Im running an AMD 2500 that I got about a year ago and it runs HOT! like high 60's low 70's according to ASUS probe v.2.21.05 (obviously on an Asus mobo) with no overclocking... Im running the OEM cooler. When I play a top FPS game like MOHAA it hits 80'C! I wrote AMD about it and they said its within the operating range..(95'C I believe) Its nice now that winter is aproaching, I dont have to run the heat but during the summer, I really should have vented it out the window..

Oh and both of my email addresses are, I hope, non guessable. Beyond that I use rules to sort what email I do get from NYTimes and the linux mailing list. I get about one spam a week from the web mail client provider, and another from excite.com which I was likeing for my homepage. Acceptable I think.

USB Vibe by Grandtec USA is a USB powered personal massager that I got from Compusa last month for 10$. No it isnt computer controlled. It is a disk 3 1/2" in diameter with a blue plastic hemisphere section covered with bumps. I havent taken it out of the package which claims "Makes sitting at your computer a pleasure!". It claims to oscilate at 60 vibrations per second. It might be great to have one as a female and put this thing on your pleasure center, maybe while your working on the airplane on your laptop and have the passenger next to you ask whats that loud humming coming from. Probably just as much fun going through security checkpoints!

Its obvious that Fox wanted to make Sunday the wacky family time. Simpsons, Family Guy, Malcolm in the Middle, all those lame Malcolm knock off's (which I never saw so Im not so sure). Anyway, they wanted to 'fix' Futurama- they made Groening add a kid so he added the Prof's clone kid Cubert- and if you notice that the kid is particulary insipid- thats cuz Groening didnt like it. Of course it didnt help that they got an entire season behind and fired the writing staff. Geez Fox, couldntcha keep your mits off.

  13. The Return of the Mule based combat system?!? on Dungeon Siege II Busts Out Trailer · · Score: 2, Insightful

Best thing about DS was the mule. Setup you party with the ranged weapons and hit stop. Then send in the mule! Monsters chase the mule, so just run it back to your charachters and watch the monsters get mowed. Other then that it was boring as crap, and despite the many interesting names the magic items had each seemed completely interchangeable. Other great parts: spending an hour at the stores trying to optimize your charachters, and having two charachters die at a time so you then had to figure out who had each item. A tremendous waste of time. Technically competent but uterly boring.

  14. Judges perform an important gatekeeper function. on 10th Anniversary Of Supreme Court's Daubert Ruling · · Score: 1

Look at the Daubert case itself. Two kids with birth defects. A chemical that was extensively analyzed in the scientific community. And a plaintiff with a really apealing pair of victims and no less then 8 (!) scientists who will testify in exchange for money that they have a theory that they havent published. If this went to trial its easy to imagine that these kids could get 'break the company' levels of damages. Despite that fact that the connection was really tenuous to the defendant... Knocking out junk science works both ways for example both prosecutors and defendants might otherwise demand that their polygraph test be admitted.. Conclusion-if youve got a scientific theory, publish it, and subject it to peer review.
