and wow, I don't have to worry about memory leaks in general, or pointer assignments, or geez. I'm sorry, I just wrote a business system I can hand off to a junior maintainer and never see again in the time it took me to write the C headers.

  5. From what I recall reading, H265 gives you maybe 20% better compression than H264. I don't think I'd try any higher than that ratio, at least not generically. I compress with PQ as the goal, size is secondary. It doesn't matter how small it is if I can't stand watching it. Now, with that said, I usually drop resolution to 720p and DDII for phones/tablets, which results in files between 30 and 50% size compared to those for the TV. They're fine on a less than 10" screen, just don't play them on the large screen.

  6. Since Apple, IIRC, has moved to NVMe SSDs, I think you already have your SSD solution. 2 slots would be better, naturally. RAM slots would be nice but since LPDDR currently maxes out at 16GB, and they're shipping with 16GB, so what do you want to upgrade to?

And polls say most would vote for him again over Hillary. But the media has a way of keeping people like you from thinking beyond their talking points, and people like you seem to be fine with that.

You must be referring to Fox News polls. Whatever I may think about Hillary is irrelevant, this current incompetent hyperactive 3 yo with an ego the size of Uranus and a skin thinner than a soap bubble and an apparent subconscious Nazi should never have been president. Yes, he stroked those fears and fanned the hatred against Hillary, and reassured the sheep (his supporters) he'll take care of them all the while as he's lining them up for his abattoirs.

I did state that I wished Trump supporters would get what they deserved before the election. I also noted that unfortunately, should he win, all of us would suffer the same fate. I do hate being right.

However, that said, there's the OJ chase that went on for what seemed like a week and could be summed up in 1 paragraph. The Grenfell's fire is another that only needs a couple of pictures and the story, video adds nothing there either, except maybe if you're a forensics person.

In short most things for news purposes are fine in written form. Only when there's a need for an evidentiary progression of actions do you need video. Audio and video can both convey the intensity of raw emotion. All forms of media can be very effective manipulative tools, as seen by conspiracy theory websites, or the described Murrow report or the mentioned videos.

I don't know about Murrow's report being more effective in audio vs video, but the Rodney King or Reginald Denny beatings or the recent spate of police brutality videos certainly would be diminished or even ignored in anything other than video. Video shows the extent and manner of the interaction and leaves all interpretation aside at least for those events as there's no excuse nor rationalization for them.

  11. The 6 Mbit stream is compressed; it gets upconverted to a 25 Mbit stream before decoding. Most people will not be able to sense a difference

If you have 20/100 vision and don't wear any glasses, maybe. Otherwise you'll definitely notice a difference in relatively standard 1080p material visually, and don't forget the sound. A TrueHD stream itself is roughly 5Mbps. Converting to Dolby II 5.1 without too much loss results in about 1.5 Mbps, so your 6Mbps stream is now 4.5 Mbps video, which is about the limit for non-artifact simple cartoons with simple color palettes and stationary backgrounds. Movies with panning views including complex landscapes will easily eat up 12Mbps at a reasonably compressed rate with minimum artifacts, not including sound. Compare that with Cable (TWC does about 5-6 Mbps) or U-verse (6-8 Mbps) and you'll see why OTA (9-13 Mbps) is a better picture even though it's 1080i. All of those use DD 5.1 sound at most, so you lose 1-1.5 Mbps to sound. BluRays are between 28-35 Mbps and many have TrueHD or equivalent lossless sound. And yes, there is a different between TrueHD and DD 5.1. Of course, that makes no difference if you're only using the stereo TV speakers.

I only mention all that to contrast it with the requirements of 4K video, which has 4 times the potential content. Yes, H265 does a better job at compressing it, but you can compress 1080 with H265 as well, and in fact, my limit numbers are based on H265, so it's an apples to apples comparison. The 4K disks run about 70GB per movie. If you think you can compress that down to an acceptable 6 Mbps stream, well, I have some ocean front property in LA to sell you, just come at low tide.

I personally don't have time for video, nor the emotionally pandering claptrap most talking heads spout these days trying to "lure" you in. The effect on me is to move on whenever I'm exposed to it, even if I care about the topic supposedly being presented. As far as the web goes, I watch 0 videos. I have no 3rd party plugins for viewing content and have disabled the internally supplied ones.

As an example of how utterly inefficient video is, Dylan's Nobel monologue ran something like 23 minutes on video (according to the snippet underneath the box) but I read the entire speech in less than 3 minutes. I was curious whether I missed something when it came on TV later, so I left it going. Nope, just Dylan speaking at his normal 20 words a minute..... I lost interest as I'd already read it and there was nothing to be gained by watching him drone on.

  14. The menu bar thing is a bit quirky, until you realize - why should it not be that way? Granted, having the ability to mount/unmount somewhere on the bar might be allright, and there's probably a third party app that will add it, as you can already do it at least 3 ways from built-in options (Finder, Disk Utility, Terminal)

Learning the Cmd-Tab / Cmd-tilde (and SHIFT) keyboard shortcuts will make windows application navigation seem so web 1.0.

As for DMGs, they're a lot easier to deal with than the package managers for Linux. Windows has pkg installers, DMGs are no different, except they don't auto-execute. It's an extra click. I can handle it.

I agree with your sentiment, however, not everyone will like OSX's GUI. I don't like everything about it, but it does work relatively well, and I can work with its shortcomings, as I perceive them.

Ugly fonts? Really? If you don't like them, install some alternates. Not a problem. Better yet, the entire system will use them and scale them as appropriate across the UI. Windows still has a mish mash of dialog boxes within the OS itself that have a number of different behaviors and capabilities, some dating to Windows 2.x days. Linux? Clunky as hell UI. You'll need to show me what you think is a better UI.

What's the problem with the title bar? I have large screens, somehow I'm not seeing the issue. If you don't like the title bar, there's always full screen mode.

If you can deal with Linux's flaws, then there's no mac issue. FWIW, I don't use Launcher nor Mission Control, or a host of over available things, yet I manage running multiple applications and documents with ease. Mouse acceleration? It's been under the "Mouse" preference panel forever, from what I recall, haven't been there in years. And you don't need to buy anything to do tweaks. In fact, I've been running with video blocked for years in Safari, because you can turn it off with a simple command (no, it's not available via a GUI, which would be nice, but that'll be fixed in Safari 11 apparently) etc etc etc.

As for Touch Bar, I still haven't figured out a reason for it. It's a nice tweak, maybe, for video or sound editing, but everything else? Not convinced, please leave the F keys alone thank you.

  19. Macbooks? I don't know. Macbook Pros OTOH are pretty well made, so much so that that glue etc actually doesn't matter because after 5+ years it's time to buy a new one anyways.

  20. Cars don't just "easily merge into the gaps between trucks". They notice, 40 meters before an exit on the right, that they're about to miss their exit, and recklessly cut at a 35-degree angle across 4 lanes of traffic to try to catch the exit without dying as their car is split in half on the guard rail. They come up and merge onto the highway going 20mph slower than traffic.

Around here you rarely have someone that slow merging, because those people usually have other timid driving habits and will be pancaked sooner than later. IMNSHO, they shouldn't be on the road in the first place, and never been licensed.

I don't know what boring-ass driving game you're playing on your Sega Genesis over there, but you need to take a look at the real world.

I've lived in and spent significant time in multiple major metropolitan areas in several countries over the years and by far the worst US drivers are in MA. MD's drivers aren't known for being great either, probably something to do with the wrecks half of them drive around in as the last time I was there vehicles only needed to be inspected on new owner registrations. The entire East coast from DC on north to Boston is one hugely congested mess of traffic with subpar highways for most of it. Yes, the driving conditions there are suboptimal. They're definitely not for beginners, and it's a location I would not ride a motorcycle in at all, ever. I'd go so far as to say that's true for about every major metropolitan area at this point. You're barely safe in the original Hummer as far as people "seeing" you.

  23. No, they're in the right lane and going right-lane speed of 50mph. At 50mph, I have time to react; they don't.

Your argument is deceptive because it is incomplete. Your argument, in full, is that "they should be going significantly slower than you and have additional obstacles thrown in their way at random intervals for them to react to versus the alternative situation of not cruising in the right lane." Those additional obstacles--frequent merging on and off of the highway through the right lane--add risk. The lower speed decreases risk.

Your continued pounding of this point indicates you have no real world experience dealing with this type of traffic pattern. Trust me, there's a reason things work well on the autobahn, and not so well with equal speed trucks and cars. In the 50mph right lane scenario, cars easily merge into the gaps between trucks (because they still need significant spacing to be able to stop) and easily accelerate and move left. The trucks never even brake in this scenario.

As for the residential street thing - they'll drop those to 25, 20, or even 15 mph depending upon city. All residential streets I've been on have been 30mph or less in various cities and states. What city/state allows for 40mph residential streets?

I've got plenty of time to react with what I can see when I can see it, but someone 10 times my mass doesn't.

Which is why they should be going significantly slower than you. Still the same argument.
