  1. Re:180 billion light-years wide on An Older, Larger Universe · · Score: 1

You can figure this out using a number of methods, usually involving red shift and triangulation. As far as what is outside of it, that is akin to asking what is north of the north pole (paraphrased from S. Hawking). Not what is above the north pole, but what is north of it? If you keep walking north until you hit the north pole and then walk past it, you have to turn around again to go north, because you've suddenly started going south. Think of the Universe as a multidimensional sphere. You can keep going in any direction forever and just keep "walking in circles".

  2. Re:Ummm ...yes! on Ubuntu to Bring About Red Hat's Demise? · · Score: 1

Umm, there are no drawbacks to running a Red Hat shop. In particular when you compare it to Ubuntu, but I guess you haven't used Fedora or Red Hat to base your decision on. I don't think you realize the level of integration that Red Hat has in the server arena, and the major Vendors that work with Red Hat so that things are seamless. Not to mention that Red Hat has been commended for their support year-over-year, and their CEO was recently named the best CEO that other CEOs like working with (or something like that, I forget exactly what it was called). Red Hat also does the majority of development on many major open source projects, GCC and the kernel being two of them. Now that Red Hat has JBoss, they can provide even more integration in the stack. There is not a single advantage to running Ubuntu over Red hat (especially if you use the Red Hat Network (RHN) which blows anything similar away), but there are many advantages to running Red Hat over Ubuntu. You might pay a little more than with Ubuntu, but it's still cheap (cheaper than MS and similar pricing to Novell). When you're running the kind of high-end servers that Red Hat typically runs on, companies want to know that they'll be getting the best support in the industry. Red Hat also has an astounding track record for security, in fact one of the reasons Linux has such a good reputation for security is because often times Red Hat hauls ass getting patches out the door. The community uses a ton of code written by Red Hat, and if Red Hat ever did cease to be in business, you'd see open source development grind to a halt (or very slow pace) over night. I think you underestimate Red Hat's role in both the OSS community and in enterprise.

You've got to be shtting me if you think the U.S. is the only civilized country that has these types of practices. Just because something is illegal, doesn't mean the government doesn't do it, it just means they need to cover it up better. At least the U.S. is pretty open about these policies. Try getting the Chinese, Russians, or British to discuss this kind of stuff. There is plenty of historical evidence showing that they participate in similar practices, but everyone tries to cover up it. It's all just a big game of hide-n-seek. I'm not saying whether it is wrong or right, just saying this is the norm for governments.

Red Hat's bread and butter is support. Oracle is trying to discredit Red Hat as a company and might be trying to divert some of their revenue as well. Oracle might also be dipping its toes in the water to see what supporting a distro entails and seeing if it is worth it for them to release their own distro. Then again, it could be a huge boon for Red Hat, because arguably Red Hat wins as long as more people are using their distro, regardless of whether or not they get paid.

At least Red Hat makes an attempt at getting engineers on the problems when they can. Offering enterprise level support is no easy task, IBM, Oracle, and Microsoft all fail to meet that... this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. What this really bois down to is that RedHat just bought JBoss, and is moving in on Oracle's turf. Larry is pissy now and trying to discredit Red Hat.
