Some people like everything and the kitchen sink. Its nice to sit down at a computer and have *everything* you need to just be there so you can get right to work and not have to worry about *anything*. It all just works. Also just installing everything makes installing other 3rd party stuff (like small little utilities that noone has heard about) later that may not be in any yum repositories much easier because you most like have everything that it depends on. Regardless, if your running a server you can always do the FC3 server install and you can have a fully functional server with lots of nice goodies and the added security of SELinux in less space then a cd can hold (Probably much less in cases where you only need to do one thing like run a web server). I've run many many distros over the years, including FreeBSD, and Fedora Core 3 has gone above and beyond my expectations, it is truly impressive and the best I've seen. Plus its so damn fast and responsive, Red Hat has out done itself.

Yes they stopped selling it... they give it away for free now, nothing has changed except that the community is more involved now. Same RedHat engineers still work on Fedora. It just wasn't cost efficient for Red Hat to sell and support the linux desktop in its current state. In a year or two, they may reevaluate that decision. The community kept complaining about how their desktop wasn't as free as it could be and how the community wasn't involved enough. Red Hat said, "Okay fine, here is everything we have, help us out if you want. We won't even charge you for it anymore, but we'll still keep the same quality people programming it. That way you get everything you've been asking for." Luckily, Fedora has a huge following and it was largely successful, although if you only read slashdot you might think otherwise. Then again if you only read slahdot, you'd think 50% of the world ran Gentoo and that is was perfectly viable for large corporations to run Debian depsite the fact that it is company policy to have all software supported.

On a side note, have you ever tried the Java Desktop System? Sun tried their hardest to cover up any and every aspect that what your running was linux with a gnome desktop environment. All they want people to think is hey this is Java and this is Sun. They tried to hide anyone else getting credit for what you're using. (That may have changed since last I tried it, but highly unlikely) Sun doesn't give a damn about linux, they just want to make money. Red Hat on the other hand open sources just about everything and the people that work there are honestly enthusiastic about Linux. Yes they are both corporations and out for profit, but Red Hat goes about it in a much better and more subtle way. Red Hat will always be dependant on the community and they know this, so they try to play well with the other kids on the block, Sun on the other hand will take anything they can get the second they can get it. They just see a market shift and are taking advantage of it.

All of the big commercial distros (the ones consumers and businesses will/are using) are based on Red Hat. Red Hat is pretty good with standards, so itd be safe to say that if a standard is in order companies and developers are more likely to go with Red Hat. It is safer (or at least appears to be from a business perspective) because its backed by a corporation, and its already what most commercial distros are based around. Game developers etc... are going to listen to where the money is. If someone refuses to pay for a linux distro, they most likely (yes this is stereotypical of me) won't buy other software, so why should a software developer dependant on making money from software, market it to a base that typically doesn't buy software? I'm not trolling/flaming/etc... just trying to be realistic.

Not to mention that YaST is the work of Satan and I couldn't even get Suse to boot on my laptop (it kept freezing when syslogd was being started and wouldn't go any further) I have yet to experience any problems with Fedora and thats why I'll continute to use it.

Pretty much any company that releases both consumer and business software uses the consumer software to test the waters and once it seems okay they make the fixes and sell it to businesses along with 5 year contracts. Thats just business, get over it. At least Red Hat isn't ripping off the consumer, the Fedora development model isn't too much different then it was with the RH desktop distro... but the community kept complaining that it wasn't free and Red Hat made very little money (something like 3 million dollars) from its desktop version so they released it to the community as Fedora. Now the consumer gets probably the highest quality linux distribution avaialable, along with a huge supporting community. I use Fedora because it is stable, but has the latest and greatest. It is the only distro that runs on my laptop, and it is the only distro that I have been able to reliably install on just about any machine. You might want to check out Fedora Core 3 when it comes out on the 8th. Although SuSE is a nice linux distro, I find that people are more likely to understand Fedora and be able to use more of its functionality. Don't ask me why heh, its just what I've observed. Also, it's a very secure operating system, super easy to set up, very easy update system (a little icon sits in your system tray and starts blinking with a big exclamation point if updates are available) or you can use yum or apt, FC3 is going to have SELinux compiled into it so you can learn about that and test it out. FC3 is also going to have kernel 2.6.9 and Gnome 2.8 so it should be fast, easy to use, and work well with most hardware. But most important(and this is operating system neutral), only run as root when you absolutely have to! You have no idea how important that is, and if you don't follow that rule then just forget about any other security measures. If you are hacked and you know that you haven't ran as root for a very long time and are positive you weren't root when you got hacked, then all you really have to do is create a new user, delete the infected user (copy over some important *data* files first if you must), and life is good again. This is assuming that you haven't made your system or important system files writable to non root users. When you first install a system (if its not done already) its probably best to make everything read only, except for your home directory. With SELinux you can even get hacked and know exactly what was affected and be confident that nothing else was, its very nice and worth reading about.
