The browser is the portal to the world's information. It is also one of Microsoft's most entrenched products and MS has made companies go bankrupt just to force IE on users. If we can beat MS at the browser war, then all of the sudden web sites will have to start being standards compliant, all of the sudden Linux users can bank online, all of the sudden the world has realized that Open Source is a viable alternative and has quality. If firefox can get on the majority of desktops then people will be more receptive to Open Source, they will know its out there, something many people don't know right now. The user base of OSS and OSS operating systems will go up. It will give companies incentives to write cross platform applications and drivers. Maybe in a year or two you'll see OpenOffice.Org starting to cut into MS's office space too. All of the sudden people will have very few reasons not to switch to linux, they can no longer say that they won't be able to view certain websites because the web will be standardized and they won't be able to say that they can't exchange documents because by OpenOffice.org 2.0 I would suspect that it'll be far greater competition to MS (not that it isn't already). Yes, wikipedia is important, but not everybody needs an encyclopedia all the time. This is a good effort and will help everyone in OSS over the long run.

If your having hours of downtime a day you must not be all there in your head. Seriously, go download Fedora Core 2, install it, everything will be set up for you... port your code to php or jsp or whatever if your finding it unstable. Coldfusion is hell and way overrated. If your going to use opensource, go completely open source because thats what it was designed with in mind. But judging from your website, you've got a lot more work to do then just getting a server running properly. Ugh... go buy a book or two, one for servers and one for web design. Saying windows comes with an ftp client is like comparing notepad to vim or emacs. Its just two different levels of play. You can't compare them. When I install linux, I have a full system from an Office Suite to a development environment to a graphics environment. If an average user never wanted to add another piece of software to a computer after linux was installed, they'd probably never really have a need for anything else or if they did, it wouldn't be all that terrible. Windows on the other hand comes with nothing! You get notepad, paint, and solitaire...oh joy. Does it even come with wordpad anymore?

And then you get to the drivers... installing drivers on windows is hell and requires continuous reboots. If you don't have a driver for your NIC (and yes its happened to me before) you can't even go up on the net to d/l them. You have to find another computer and get them! Its nuts! Microsoft has horrible hardware support, its just that Hardware vendors have good Microsoft support. Not every little bit of hardware may work with my linux box, but 99% of it does, and at least if I know its compatible with linux then I'll never have to fuss with anything and it'll just work.

Someone above mentioned Mac's support for hardware being good..its built on freebsd, its good hardware support is good simply because they know exactly what hardware will be running on your machine and how it will be configured, you don't have a million different configurations like on a PC.

Well for one, fedora by design is very non-root centric and I don't believe any user will typically be running as root. There is no need for an average user to ever be root, even up2date jsut asks for the root password when you double click it. Because of this adduser as well as most(all) of the other commands aren't in your path and all this spits out is a bunch of "bash: adduser: command not found". Even if it was in your path, you don't have permission to run it. As long as your not running as root this particular virus still isn't a problem, although thats not to say that future variations won't be. I assume Yahoo and Red Hat will take care of this quickly and whatever Romanian (In one of the other threads it was pretty much confirmed thats where this originated from) is going to be dealt with.

Whoever answered the questions for Temple was stretching the truth a bit, the questions don't really ask to what extent the technology is used, just if it is at all(i.e. they have a wireless network covering two floors of one building and thats about it).I go to Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania's neighbor, part of our campus actually overlaps, and we share security with them and because of this I frequent Penn's campus. Drexel is way more connected and in the survey it said they don't provided web pages and we don't offer courses in emerging technologies! Emerging technologies are one of our biggest focuses. Our survey had "no" for 6 answers when in reality the only one that is no is "Does tuition include a computer." and they have our computer to person ratio at 8/100, they don't account for the fact that every student has their own computer. The real ratio is something like 99.97%. And then the survey left out things like Internet2 of which my school was one of the first on it and I use it quite often and its quite impressive.

I recently started using ruby. It is really really nice thus far. I run it on linux, but this is a one-click installer for windows. Check it out, it's worth eventually at least mentioning to students so they know it exists. Python or ruby are good languages to start off with, but I found that javascript seems to spark people's interest the quickest. I believe its because you instantly create graphical projects with things that can move, flash, and that you control. It's also very easy for them to show off their javascript creations to their friends and family so there is a motivational factor as well. Most people aren't too impressed with the command line despite its power and it would take a while for you to get to anything graphical in python or ruby. Javascript is cross platform, works just about anywhere and requires no special tools or programs other then a web browser. It's worth at least thinking about. Good luck.

This is why the missions to mars are so important, if we start living forever we are going to need to expand. Of course this would be following the trend of our past history, we start in a small location (often thought to be africa) and slowly move outward, adapting to the environment or changing the environment to adapt to us (most often a little of both), now we've almost filled the earth and we are figuring out how to adapt to our next frontier. Once we conquer the local planets and are able to successfully live outside of earth's atmosphere, we will quickly take over the solar system (as much of it as we can) and then probably the whole galaxy and so on. This is just how we work, its what we are designed to do. Technology and tools are just a part of evolution, the physical body only evolves so much and so fast, our minds are outpacing our bodies, so we are using our minds to catch up and imporve what we see fit. Nanotech, space exploration, and anti-aging technologies are probably the most important things being researched right now and are most likely going to all be successful simply because it fits into the continuation of our species as it has always existed.

And expect it to only get better (I'm not sure if the recently released 1.1.3 uses the gtk interface, the fedora crew IIRC back ported some CVS features or something like that to get GTK, I might be mixing details though, its been months since I've looked into it), the reason OOo's interface has always been a problem, and OOo's memory etc... was abnormally high is simply because the OOo code base is 15 years old. 15 years ago there was no standard or unified desktop of *anykind* so they needed to implement their own toolkit and in some cases even had to implement an entire desktop environment that looked similar(kind of) to older Windows, but then again older Windows looked alot like many other OSes at the time too. Now that the major operating systems are starting to get their act together and have a consistent, unified desktop of sorts, OOo is revamping its code to take advantage of this fact. OOo 2.0 should be amazing, and by that time I don't beleive there will be any reason to not use it, unless you need some form of Microsoft DRM nonsense. Hope this clears things up.
