How do you reach the next generation? This seems obvious... the next generation watches youtube. When I was introduced to Monty Python, it was tv.
I saw it, it was funny, sometimes I wanted to watch it when it wasn't on tv... so I might buy it.
Now it's youtube... they saw it, it was funny, they thought it'd be neat to watch it in the car... or at least, not at the computer.
This exposure and marketing thing is not that complicated. The problem seems to be IP holder's inability to really grasp how big the internet enabled marketplace is... a tiny percentages of sale conversions, in a freakin enormous marketplaces = lots of sales.
Thing is, you have to accept the idea that you might make MORE from your body of work, by recognizing that 'enough' might not be a sale from everyone that enjoyed your work, every time they did. You can't gain the benefits of the massive free exposure of the internet, if you are not willing to concede some of the sales as marketing.
It IS that surprising. Garriott is a veteran, the whole Ultima Franchise, not to mention UO (more or less) started the whole (grahpical) MMO thing. To have created an epic fail like Tabula Rasa, is surprising.
And, I'll say for the record, WoW is not the first to be designed like it is. WoW itself was trying to be so many other RPGs, and MMOs before it (but better.) WoW was fantastic, even though I'm highly critical of the endgame.
The flipside of that is EVERY MMO is trying to be as successful as WoW. To your point, it is the reigning champion... but it's also getting old, just like every last one of them before it.
I have thought about getting one of these... it's a nifty alarm clock.
That said, they gotta get this price point down to $100 for an alarm clock.
It's not portable, needs the derned plug. It does some neat things, if I'm lying in bed. It doesn't seem like an awesome digital picture frame, those are supposed to look like frames. But it does seem like a cool alarm clock... just not worth $180.
If I understand correctly, and IANAL, ISPs have no liability for the traffic in the first place due to common carrier status.
That is of course, unless you are Comcast et. al, and are treating different kinds of content differently, in which case you can no longer claim common carrier.
I agree that the song issue is the result of disputes, it's just one of the things that bugs me. I understand it, jut don't like it. As usual, some artists are still holding out... but it bugs me when I see them do it to only a couple songs... it's like they are admit the other stuff isn't worth anything to begin with.
I totally agree... I love the Rhapsody service, I get to hear tons of new music because of it. The really big boys ain't on there, but I don't care about that shiz anyway... I don't need Metallica or Madonna.
I do have my gripes though... like songs that were once available for stream, later being removed, or limited to 30s clips... (the minority, but it still happens to me alot.)
That: 1) They know they're case(s) are weak 2) Their campaign is most certainly not about suing wrongdoers. It's about calculated methods to change copyright by case law.
Really this won't stop until someone with resources starts playing in their playground. That is, attacks the xIAA for racketeering, price fixing, extortion, by way of the civil courts this is not likely to end soon.
The US legal system is simply broken. Our society treats corporations as equals, yet they are designed to pool capital. Anyone can sue, with little recourse, and if you have enough money, you can make it so the average man cannot possibly fight back. Meanwhile, all the time that you spend fighting the lawsuit, you find it very difficult to better your life in any other way, even save and/or invest.
And if you start talking about methods to put the system back in check... well then you are labeled a socialist or a communist. There has been legislation all throughout the preeminent authority's tenure on free market capitalism, but I dare you to start talking about Antitrust legislation now.
Because they do not have the votes in the houses that would be necessary to make it happen.
Since they know this, dragging everyone through the ordeal of trying to impeach him is a waste of time. Plus, that time can be better served by continuing to force republicans to vote side with Bush, which makes '08 better for Democrats. Hopefully so much so that you get the 60 Senate votes needed to stop the filibuster.
Bush's damage is done, getting him out of office now does not help... and it certainly does not help for Bush to resign, and leave Cheney as president. The chance to help was in '04... Remember that when your choice is to vote for a black man, or a woman in order to reclaim the White House.
I left XM for Sirius because as you point out, their music selection is better. Their NPR selection is also lightyears ahead of XM. I'm hopeful that Sirius' CEO being at the helm is a good sign.

Why does so much of our legislation not pass the commone sense test?
Ya I guess, but I dare you to try and keep that up for another 15 years. Or try and have a significant personal relationship working like that...
There is no life to be head with 66% of your time at work.
So, unless that is *literally* the only thing you like... do yourself a favor and find some balance.
School funding is absolutely based on attendance.

And can I say FINALLY!
Email is pull.
SMS is push.
My friend can't get my attention with email, they have to wait until my attention is already on my email.
It's not the Obama camp that is focused on Palin.
It's the media.

Ah, ya... external soundcards are not for people that do not care about sound. :)
It's on a riser card, attaches to a connector on the board.
This is precisely why I did go with the Asus card... You can have both... plus a nice ASIO driver. Instead of choosing.
how does a (nice) external sound card slow your computer down?
Now they can start teaching kids how to pass the No Child Left Online test...
Completely agree...
Those aren't 'they're tubes' they are taxpayer tubes.

Off-topic... but that fracking bs is one of my biggest gripes of BSG... (the biggest one being the completely convoluted story arc.)
It's like a non-stop insult to my intelligence.
That's good to hear... like I said, I'm a fan.

As for the official RealPlayer (which rhapsody is not,) I do believe it still sucks...
http://www.stopbadware.org/reports/reportdisplay?reportname=realplayer01282008 [stopbadware.org]
Not true...
Rhapsody requires the Rhapsody client, or the Rhapsody web plugin... but does not use Real Player.
I'm sure it uses the same tech...
However, I'm a Rhapsody subscriber, but I too refuse to install the Real Player.

But I digresss...
They did not pay for the lines. You paid for the lines. Those surcharges, and taxes on your bill are the things that paid for the lines.
There is a fair bit of evidence to suggest we already have been visited, if not contacted.

There is always a government agency to refute the evidence... though they have little of their own.
No, I do not own a tinfoil hat. I'm just saying, maybe The Truth Is Out There.

An Inc. shelter's you from this.
You may recall, that Haliburton, the #1 contractor we pay to screw up Iraq, just moved the company to Dubai.
